Chapter 443: Volume 9: Phantom of the Ancient Castle, Chapter 5: Rebirth Part 3
Komer’s feigned respect did not cause any fluctuations in the girl’s emotions; it seemed she had long anticipated the difficulties posed by the young lord sitting before her. She had never thought that a simple conversation would be enough to make him change his beliefs, which was quite unrealistic.
"Your baronship, you are of noble birth from the Kingdom of Nicosia, and your father is also the highly respected Cyprus Finance Officer. Although it is said that there is freedom of religion in the Kingdom of Nicosia and the Homer region, there are more than a dozen sects within the kingdom and the Homer region. Why did you choose the God of Darkness as the main deity of your faith? I really want to know the true answer to this question, and I hope you can satisfy my little curiosity." Without the cover of a mask, the girl’s face displayed an even more evident noble pride. The Dark Binding could not suppress her reserve and elegance; it felt more like Komer was the prisoner, and she was the judge.
"Heh, Mage Lome, I think you are mistaken. I won’t deny that I practice Dark Magic, or that you might consider me a Dark Mage, but Hades is not the main God of my faith. On this point, your understanding might be slightly off. As for my mage friends, they were all invited by me to take part in the adventure at Damarlinsk Castle. I have no right to interfere with their beliefs, as long as their actions do not violate the laws of Caucasus. I never inquire into that," Komer explained with a laugh, unfazed by the confrontational tone of the other party: "You may not believe it, but the truth is indeed so. In the current situation, there’s no need for me to deceive you, right?"
"So, are you saying that Your baronship might still have faith in our God of Light?" The slightly sarcastic tone did not sound very friendly, but her voice, clear as a warbling oriole, concealed the strong hostility, which sounded uniquely appealing to Komer’s ears.
"Mage Lome, I also don’t quite believe in this God of Light. If I really have to choose a God to believe in, I would prefer to choose the War God Mars." Shrugging his shoulders, Komer preferred this kind of heart-to-heart communication, and he was very willing to solve problems this way, if possible.
"Your baronship, are you saying that faith can also be chosen or changed at will? Your statements are indeed somewhat difficult to comprehend!" The beautiful girl’s gaze grew colder, "As a noble lord of the Kingdom of Nicosia, such thoughts you have are truly frightening."
"Frightened? The Church of Light still has things to fear? Hahahaha!" Komer’s attitude became more wild and arrogant, "Miss Lome, can we discuss the purpose of your visit to Caucasus? Besides, I also very much want to know what role you play in the Church of Light, and what exactly about Caucasus warrants such attention from the Church. The Thunderhorse Knights have come, then priests and judges, and now you, the mysterious Grand Mage. Hey, hey, does my little plot of the land in Caucasus appeal to your Church of Light that much?"
Gazing at Komer’s face for a long while, the beautiful girl’s face even showed a mix of disdain and pity, and only after Komer finished speaking, did she calmly say: "Your baronship, with such a good family background and opportunities, why do you seek a path of self-destruction? If you are willing to repent and reform, our Church of Light would be very willing to accept a citizen who has lost their way but wishes to return."
"Repent and reform? Lost and wishing to return? Well said, Miss Lome. I do not know what standards of good and evil you hold in your heart, but do you think that practicing Dark Magic necessarily means one is inherently evil and bound to commit unforgivable crimes, while anyone who believes in the Church of Light can be absolved of any sin and thus become a saint? Ridiculous! Absurd!" Hearing such words for the second time, Komer felt even more displeased, these self-proclaimed representatives of the God relied on the power of the Church of Light to swagger about, disregarding everything. No wonder there is no peace anywhere on the Continent with these people in charge.
"What do you think you are, gods or the law? Whoever you deem evil or an outsider, is that what they become? If I say that adherents of the Church of Light are heretics and evil, can they be burned at the Burning Stake or hanged by the Noose? Surely you wouldn’t agree, so on what basis should others agree with your views?"
This time, Komer was exceptionally calm and even somewhat refined. He didn’t intend to use this means to persuade the other party, as the chances were close to zero. Komer had never harbored such a thought, but the indignation inside him made it impossible to refrain from venting. Knowing full well it would have no effect, he still wanted to voice his argument, only then would he feel relieved in his heart.
Seeing the look of compassion for the world in the other’s eyes, Komer knew his words were like playing the lute to a cow. Of course, he had never expected the other party to agree with his point of view.
"Very well, Miss Lome, I think it’s unnecessary to belabor this issue any further. You can’t persuade me just as I can’t persuade you, so let’s save this topic for another time when we have more time to discuss it, shall we? Right now, you need to answer the three questions I posed earlier. Have you thought it through?"
Perhaps sensing that there could be no common ground with Komer, the mysterious girl turned her cheek away, her indifferent and calm demeanor confirming that she had no desire to engage in a verbal skirmish with him any further.
"What’s the matter, it seems Miss Lome is not willing to cooperate with me. Since you label us as evil, did you not consider that evildoers have their own evil methods? If the ways of the Light cannot solve the problem, then we shall use evil methods to conclude the matter. There are many ways that you could not imagine which would make you spill everything without reservation. It’s just that those methods are a bit unsavory and beneath one, and I personally do not wish to resort to them, if you would deign to cooperate."Komer spread his hands, not giving up and tirelessly persuading the other party. He enjoyed this cat-and-mouse feeling, especially when the opponent was a strong and proud Light Mage. This taste allowed him to experience an inexplicable pleasure.
"Your Excellency Baron, there’s no need for further words. You must also be very clear about the tenets of the Church of Light. Since we have devoted ourselves to the God of Light, we have long since let go of material attachments. You might as well demonstrate whatever ability you have, and you will see whether the performance of us adherents of the Light disappoints you or not." The beautiful girl turned her head away with indifference, gazing elsewhere. Her serene face seemed oblivious to what was about to happen.
"Very good, that’s the spirit. I wouldn’t want to see a follower of the Church of Light kneeling before me, begging for mercy. That would greatly diminish my favorable impression of the Church of Light. If Miss Lome performs exceptionally, who knows? I might even change my mind and embrace the faith in the God of Light," Komer said, his tone filled with mockery as he clapped his hands in approval with a smile.
"Your Excellency Baron, just do whatever you have in mind, and stop wasting words," said the beautiful girl with a contemptuous glance, taking a deep breath and speaking faintly.
"Miss Lome, there’s no need to rush, we have plenty of time. I know you have already prepared for everything in your heart; perhaps the Church of Light does indeed have means that lead people to sacrifice themselves for righteousness. But what I want to tell you is, how would it feel when one day you discover that everything you have done is a betrayal of the Church of Light? Hahaha!" Standing up, Komer laughed loudly, and the pride in his eyes made the ever-composed girl shudder involuntarily. She didn’t know what methods the other party would use against her. Although she had long been ready to sacrifice her life for righteousness, if things really were as he said, then she truly would fall into an irredeemable abyss, never to recover.
"Alright, Miss Lome, let’s begin. Everything will start anew, and you will feel fortunate to have a brand-new life," Komer said excitedly, licking his lips. At this moment, an indescribable pleasure surged in the depths of his heart. Accomplishing such a feat was undoubtedly a great challenge for himself. Although he had no assurance now, even if he failed, there would be no loss to him—it’s just that the world would have one more fool. However, should he succeed, his psychic magic would surely enter a whole new realm.
