Chapter 337: Volume 6 Fortified at Every Step Chapter 3 Slaughter the Demon (1)
Komer similarly felt the enhancement of his magic ability, he now almost every other night would enter the Nightmare Realm. The memories of his past life as Kennifer III had almost entirely been copied into Komer’s mind through the so-called "Soul-branding technique," and the various experiences of Kennifer III’s past life gradually seeped into Komer’s spirit, subtly turning him into a hybrid. Komer himself perceived this, but he did not reject it. Komer had believed everything that Kennifer III had said in the nightmare, but he had no intention of acting as Kennifer’s successor to raise the flag of restoring the Dark Empire. If, in the future, taking up this banner became more advantageous for him, that would be another story, but at least for now, the Dark Church had already become synonymous with history and heresy in Mortal Society, and Komer naturally wouldn’t make the foolish move to commit such a great disservice to the world.
After returning to the Caucasus, Komer wasted no time in commissioning the all-resourceful Caffrey to borrow a large batch of books on the history of the Dark Empire and the Bright Holy Teaching from the Kingdom’s Library and private collections. However, to Komer’s expectation, there were hardly any records of the history or legends of the Dark Empire, and the rise of the Bright Holy Teaching appeared as pure and holy in the history books as the angels in the myths. The term Saintess certainly existed, but it had nothing to do with any feelings or evil, for the consecrated Saintesses of the Bright Holy Teaching would always stay in Marco, serving the God of Light without ever leaving Marco, seemingly unrelated to anything else. Nevertheless, Komer managed to glean some clues from the history books in some private libraries. The Dark Empire once existed on the Blue Continent, and the so-called Dark Church had once flourished hundreds of years ago, even becoming the state religion of that Dark Empire. The empire’s control spanned a vast area, about the size of the northern east region of the current kingdom, now a wild diseased land connected to the infinite Continent, a place avoided by Adventurers and beastmen alike.
However, all the history books contained no information or records about the disappearance of the Dark Empire and Dark Church. It was as if a vast empire and a once paramount sect had vanished into thin air, leading Komer to sense some unspeakable secret within. But now was not the time to explore these mysteries. What Komer needed was to make good use of time to practice the countless treasures brought to him by Kennifer III’s memories – various Dark Magic arts, especially the Dark Divine Techniques that Komer favored most.
Standing atop a hill, Komer and Ylot shaded their eyes with their hands as they looked into the distance, surveying the rolling, uneven shallow hills. Perhaps due to the dry climate, the terrain had few trees over five meters tall, while shrubs and various weeds under three meters spread across the land. Komer and Ylot had arrived at Bahomon three days ago. Originally, Komer had wanted to join the ogre hunting expedition alone, but Ylot, driven almost mad by the tedious training tasks, insisted on accompanying Komer to Bahomon after learning about the mission. Unable to refuse Ylot and realizing that his sword skills had improved significantly after receiving guidance following Komer’s acquisition of Kennifer III’s memories, Komer welcomed the idea of having a partner by his side and agreed.
Apart from the Lord’s Guard, after the arrival of the Immigrants, Komer enlisted an additional five hundred members from the Caucasus people to form the Caucasus Self-Defense Forces, complementing the Lord’s Guard. Many immigrants from the Myron Duchy joined the newly formed Self-defense Army, with Ylot officially taking on the command and Baoling serving as his assistant and training aide. After handing over the command, Komer and Ylot journeyed south to what had become the large construction site of Bahomon. The road from Bahomon to Ugru had been of primary importance from the very beginning, as a critical passage for the export of Fine Iron Ore. This road represented the lifeline of the entire Caucasus, at least in the short term, and it would be the most significant artery for the region. Komer and Ylot reached their destination after a two-day trek along this nearly completed route.
"Boss, it’s been three days, and we’ve still found no sign of the ogre. I clearly remember encountering the ogre around here last time. Could it have moved?" Even though it was still early spring, this place was already at the southern tip of the Caucasus, with a noticeably warmer climate, and the noonday sun had an almost hypnotic effect that could put one to sleep. However, ogres, being higher-level Magical Beasts, not only possessed formidable attack power and nimble moving ability but also sharp perception and considerable intelligence. Once they detected an intrusion into their territory, they would quickly choose the right moment to attack. Therefore, in this land, neither Komer nor Ylot dared to relax their vigilance. Komer also consciously released small Perception Magic spells to extend his Perception range, to monitor the surroundings as broadly as possible.
