Chapter 306: Volume 5: Lord’s Path Chapter 1: Immigrants_3

"Oh, to think that even such elusive faiths can breed racial hatred? That seems a bit too persistent," Komer said carelessly, which caught the attention of the middle-aged gentleman due to his dismissive view of faith.

"Lord, if I may, it sounds like you don’t take the matter of faith very seriously?" Reese asked cautiously.

"No, no, Mr. Reese, you have misunderstood. What I mean is that it seems rather absurd to be hostile towards each other over tales akin to mythological legends, and this does not concern personal faith. Whether it’s the Bright Holy Teaching or other smaller sects that worship various gods, I treat them all the same. On this point, my attitude is no different from that of other lords in the kingdom," Komer quickly clarified, realizing he might have spoken out of turn.

As Komer led a continuous stream of refugees into the Caucasus, Puber, who stayed behind in the Caucasus, was engulfed in extreme excitement and fervor.

"One hundred and fifty thousand, my goodness, that’s a super big deal. Hehe, I’ve heard that Medea, Netherland, and Naples are all famously wealthy cities and countries; I believe they will donate a large sum of funds to our Caucasus for the arrival of these refugees. Truly a blessing from heaven, it seems Caffrey is going to reap quite a few benefits from Komer again," Puber said, dancing with joy while reading the letter sent back by the mercenary guild, laughing heartily.

"But Finance Officer Sir, have you considered that we currently have no means to accommodate so many immigrants? where will they stay when they get here? How will they live? We already have enough trouble with those Half-beastman slaves, and now we’re getting one hundred and fifty thousand immigrants. What on Earth is the Lord thinking? Has he gone mad?" Hesse gasped in horror. One hundred and fifty thousand people! When Komer first proposed to bring in thirty thousand immigrant laborers, Hesse thought that was the limit, but the message that came back said one hundred and fifty thousand people; he couldn’t imagine how the current Caucasus could possibly bear so many people.

"Hehe, Mr. Hesse, please don’t panic excessively. The Lord has explained in his letter that we need not worry about food as he has arranged for supplies to be en route and believes it will reach the Caucasus soon. Hmm, it also says here that this is the suggestion of the Central Government of the Kingdom, not his decision alone. It seems our Lord’s trip to Versailles wasn’t too smooth this time," Puber said jokingly, which made Hesse worry that his son would learn to be just as slick from being around this man.

"But even if the food problem is resolved, what about other essentials? Housing? Their jobs in the future?" Hesse breathed a sigh of relief. The food issue was the most pressing; with food, at least there would be no starvation.

"Mr. Hesse, please don’t overcomplicate things. The Caucasus is surrounded by plenty of trees and stone. These immigrants are not officials and nobles; they are refugees chased out by the beastmen, not honored guests we’ve invited. It’s already very good if they can make do with simple wooden or stone houses. The winters in the Caucasus, compared to their northern homelands, are like spring. Those half-beastmen who’ve migrated from the forests have already become legal residents of the Caucasus, haven’t they? They’ve started building and setting up houses in the suburbs on their own, making a living with hard labor. That’s the example for these refugees. Obtaining citizen rights in the Caucasus does not mean they can freeload; they need to work for a living as well. Isn’t it perfect that we now have jobs to assign to them? Felling, quarrying, road building—this basic infrastructure needs more than just these few thousand people, but I think they can make a good start. Once our Lord brings back the tens of thousands of immigrants, the glorious era of the Caucasus will arrive," Puber said nonchalantly, seemingly considering all difficulties and troubles as trivial.

"Yes, father, Mr. Puber is right. The Lord is bringing back refugees. Since they are refugees, I believe they won’t have high demands. We in the Caucasus can’t possibly prepare everything for them quickly. I think the Lord understands this as well," said the young man beside Hesse excitedly. "The Caucasus has plenty of wastelands and forests, and now we’ve even found iron and coal mines—these demand a lot of workforce to exploit. One hundred and fifty thousand might seem a lot, but once spread out, in my son’s view, it might still not be enough. Our vast land in the Caucasus doesn’t have a single city. Look at the surrounding areas; take Busen Plain for instance, it has less land area than the Caucasus yet has a population of six hundred thousand, a port, and cities—now that’s a real example of a homeland!"

"Neptune, how can our Caucasus compare to the Busen Plain? That place is the heartland of the Homer region, with flat and fertile land, well-developed waterworks, rich in food production, and with Natway, a grand port, to the east. The land transportation is also exceptionally convenient—it’s not an overstatement to call it heaven. If our Caucasus can match even one percent of that place, it would be impressive," Hesse shook his head with a look of wistfulness. "Neptune, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and our Caucasus will never catch up to such a treasured place like the Busen Plain."
