Chapter 293: Volume Four: Chaos of the Mundane World, Chapter Eighteen: Interaction

In the following days, the air in Versailles suddenly grew tense. Not only had the number of knights from the Fire Shadow Knights doubled, but the frequency of the Guard Cavalries’ patrols had also visibly increased. Moreover, officials from the Internal Affairs Department began to enter Versailles, interviewing each guest one by one. Although it bore the semblance of routine procedure after all, which of the visitors to Versailles didn’t possess some status and position? How could ordinary Internal Affairs officials dare to conduct unfettered interrogations?

Komer was very cooperative with the visits from the Internal Affairs officials. He recounted how he had rested in the inn on the day of the incident, and how he visited the Minister of Internal Affairs the following afternoon until he attended the banquet in the evening. Komer also listed the companions who could vouch for him. Clearly, the Internal Affairs officials did not consider a noble like Komer a suspect. After a brief inquiry, they concluded the visit, which left Komer quite disappointed that his careful preparations had not been put to use. However, when two distinctive Thunderhorse Knights followed a white-robed mage into the Versailles Hunting Manor, Komer dared not take things lightly. He had already experienced the capabilities of the Thunderhorse Knights, and here, the only one who could command the Thunderhorse Knights to follow him was none other than Court Chief Mage Onia.

Komer wanted to leave this place as soon as possible, to avoid the people from the Church of Light, but he had to stay. Although he had already reached a consensus with the representatives of the Three City-States, and the bank drafts signed by the three representatives had been confirmed by the Versailles Bank Union Office, the allocation of slots for the one hundred and fifty thousand refugees from the three regions still required further elaboration. Fortunately, with the preliminary agreement reached at the banquet, the negotiation progressed smoothly. The allocation for the refugees from Myron Duchy, Meine City-State, and Susoer City-State was set at seventy thousand and forty thousand each, totaling one hundred and fifty thousand, as per Komer’s careful final decision.

After all this was done, Komer still couldn’t relax. Preparing the various resources the refugees would need to overwinter was an urgent task. Although he had already entrusted Puber and Hesse to help purchase food before leaving, the current situation had far exceeded his initial expectations. From thirty thousand to one hundred and fifty thousand people, it was five times the originally planned reception population. Such a large amount of food could not be bought in any one place and had to be purchased separately in various grain-producing regions and cities. As for fuel, there was no need to worry too much, as being adjacent to Leon, the largest coal mine region in the kingdom, meant that even last-minute purchases would be timely. Additionally, although other essential daily necessities did not need to be prepared by a lord, as a lord, he still had to help make contacts, at least to allow residents to be able to buy them when needed. This was naturally Caffrey’s responsibility to arrange with the members of the Barefoot Society.

"What did you say, Knight Maray? This person is a noble from the Homer region, and you say he can perform magic and is quite skilled? I haven’t misheard?" The white-robed mage raised his eyebrows in surprise, his amber eyes gleaming with a crystalline luster. His magnificent mage robe rippled like ripples, obviously excited by the news. Having already screened all the guests in the Versailles Hunting Manor and not found any notable clues, as Onia had anticipated, it seemed the murder case would have to be dropped as such. However, the revelation from the Thunderhorse Knight assisting in the investigation, suggesting such an astonishing clue, naturally excited and shocked Onia.

"Yes, I have personally seen this man casting magic, but we did not detect any Dark Magic Power in him," said Knight Maray, a hint of hesitation on his handsome face. Commander Kent had repeatedly warned not to mention the pursuit of the strange thief to anyone, even to those belonging to the Church of Light. Maray had to remain tight-lipped; he could only go this far.

"Oh? It seems I need to meet this hidden gem of the magical world. Komer, eighteen years old, heh, truly young and promising. Lord of Caucasus in the Homer region, Baron, accompanied by Caffrey, a Barefoot Society merchant, ah, and another companion, came to Versailles to discuss accepting refugees with Duke Tez, Minister of Internal Affairs. It seems this person is no small figure. A mere baron, yet a lord of such a forsaken place as Caucasus, could actually be received by Duke Tez. Perhaps this person is the one we are looking for." The white-robed mage gently stroked his smooth chin and turned his head to ask, "Knight Maray, can you tell me which type of magic this fellow was using?"

"Uh, there was Fire Magic, and, uh, White Magic as well. He has quite a high level of proficiency in both types of magic," Knight Maray answered hesitantly while recalling what he had witnessed.

The white-robed mage, whose attention was fully concentrated on the answer, didn’t notice the awkwardness on Maray’s face as he spoke. When Maray mentioned Fire Magic, the mage’s spirit was lifted, his eyes shining brightly. However, when Maray also mentioned the high proficiency in White Magic, the mage fell into confusion again.

White Magic is primarily used for rescue and healing. If someone truly possessed Dark Magic Power, they would use Dark series healing methods for rescue and treatment, rather than likely cultivating White Magic. This seemed somewhat contradictory. However, it was already a contradiction for a noble lord to have such a high level of magic skills, so the white-robed mage made peace with it. Perhaps only by truly meeting this person could he confirm or eliminate his suspicions. Onia trusted his probing abilities; no one could hide their true form before his discerning eyes, especially Dark practitioners.
