Chapter 245: Chapter 10: Counterattack
Surprise, shock, tension, and fear played in rapid succession on the faces of the magicians who seemed almost at a loss for what to do. They could not fathom how their once splendidly successful magic had suddenly failed, especially a few of the magicians were completely puzzled. However, the leading mage quickly realized that there could only be one reason for this outcome: a more powerful magic practitioner was hiding nearby!
It was only at this time they realized how foolish they had been, standing so unprotected in front of the soldiers, and the price of such folly was life itself. The magicians, who had just come to their senses, hadn’t even fully formed their protective shields when two dark shadows shot out from the Half-beast Warrior ranks. The knight spears, powered with fighting qi, tore through the air with strange whistling sounds. Enshrouded in a faint dark aura, the knight spears easily shattered the protective shields released from the magic scrolls. The magicians, unprepared for such a deadly encounter, did not have any magic scrolls at hand that could withstand a strike from the Dark Knights. When the knight spears tore through their chests, splashing blood which blossomed into a gruesome and yet striking pattern in the air like a beautiful rose, it was only then that the Commander of the Warrior Baron Haranto realized his magicians were being assassinated right in front of him.
The deaths of two comrades bought time and opportunity for the lead magician. The chilling murderous intent and fighting qi erupting from the assassins nearly split his heart with terror. A magician had no chance in close combat with assassins. Almost as a subconscious act of self-preservation, the magician had never cast Earth Escape Technique so swiftly, depleting his magic power in one breath to merge with the ground as quickly as possible, all to escape rather than engage in a regular spar.
The earth magician who had cast the Earth Elemental Giant and Hell Devourer spells vanished in the blink of an eye. Slightly annoyed, Solonberg used his Spiritual Sense to detect the direction of the magician’s escape, but it was evident that this man was not only an exceptional earth-based magic expert but also a survivor with an extraordinary will to live, a clever escapist. When Solonberg’s sensing honed in on the escape path and aura, the magician had already burrowed deep beneath the feet of the Homer Soldiers. Finding him now, unless they were to defeat thousands of soldiers before them, seemed impossible, and by that time, the magician could be long gone.
Never having witnessed such a bloody and terrifying scene, the magicians watched as their idols turned into corpses. Only when the assailant, wrapped tightly in black, drew his weapon across another comrade’s throat did they realize—their group of magic practitioners was the target!
To the two Dark Knights, fleeing in all directions like a panicked crowd was utterly meaningless. These superficial magicians dreaming of escape in front of them were delusional. But Baron Haranto’s presence with Knight Balmore’s knight spears as well as several high-level warriors with combat knives halted the further actions of the two Dark Knights. Especially since Baron Haranto was showing signs of a developing neutral fighting qi, which made the Dark Knights itch for a fight. In their eyes, nobility was worthless; the thrill of the kill was all that mattered, regardless of the status of their foe.
Baron Haranto must stop the assassins from advancing further. The one-strike deaths of two magicians had caused him near panic, for these were the Duke’s cherished assets. Such unexplained deaths upon the Battlefield would leave him with no justifiable explanation upon returning victorious. The only solution was to slay the assassins and then blame the somewhat negligent magicians, but his primary task was to kill the assassins.
The pale blue light seemed about to burst from his body, signaling the threshold of mastering neutral fighting qi. Baron Haranto’s knight spear pursued the shadow hunting the magicians, while dozens of high-level warriors formed a robust defensive circle, preventing the two dark figures from wreaking havoc in their ranks. It was clear these elite warriors from the Homer Army were specially trained, their resolute faces, serious expressions, and the emanating vigorous murderous intent all testifying to their status as elite forces.
At each step they took, a torrent of blades and sword waves surged toward the two Dark Knights. Despite Solonberg and Vladimir Koff’s notoriety across the Continent, they had never faced a charge by so many high-level warriors of a regular army, leaving them momentarily unsure how to respond.
Ducking away from Baron Haranto’s spear pursuit, Solonberg immediately cast a defensive Dark Magic spell. A black mist swiftly enveloped his body, rendering it blurred and indistinct, while Vladimir Koff instead continuously activated his inner power to maximize his speed. His acceleration magic immediately produced afterimages, but the experienced high-level warriors remained unfazed. They continued pressing forward at their steady rhythm, driving up a tide of swords akin to mercury overwhelming the earth. The Blinding Methods used by the two Dark Knights had no effect on them. Even without entering the Fighting Qi Phase, the collective might of so many long swords and combat knives forced even the Dark Knights to temporarily retreat from the onslaught, and that was before accounting for the two formidable Knights relentlessly pursuing them.
