Chapter 1034: Volume 33, Where to Go, Chapter 22, The Battle that Sways the City (5)
"Has it come?" Komer opened his eyes, took a deep breath, and sat motionless on the chair.
Maha Gummi’s face was slightly pale, a rare sight for this Half-beastman Hybrid. He was equally aware of his fate; once Komer was done for, he would be reverted to his original form. No mortal held any affection for him, except for Komer. He knew that his fate could only be fully tied to Komer; without Komer, he was nothing.
"They have come. They didn’t hide anything and left directly from Marco. By now, they must have passed through the Beastman Control Zone and entered our territory." Maha Gummi tried his best to appear calm and composed in front of his master, but he found it impossible. The overwhelming prospect of loss almost crushed him, and he knew that his master faced the same pressure. However, Komer’s calm demeanor gave him a bit of confidence.
"Hmm, they’ve arrived quite quickly, which is just as well. I was worried they’d dally and make it difficult to explain things to the Basarabians and the Jellyfish People. It seems that it’s just the right time for a perfect battle." Komer spoke indifferently, "Maha Gummi, are you afraid?"
"Afraid?" Maha Gummi was stunned. Was he afraid?
It seemed that during his struggle for survival in the mines of Leon, he had never known fear, even when his comrades died silently in accidents of mine collapses, or perished from overwork amid groans. At that time, he didn’t have any concept of fear, but what about now? Now, it seemed that he was beginning to feel something. It wasn’t a fear of death, but a fear of losing everything he now possessed.
If he truly lost his life, there would be no regrets. But being stripped of all he had gained and sent back to his original living conditions was something Maha Gummi believed might drive him insane. He couldn’t lose everything; if all was to be taken from him, it might as well include his life.
Komer noticed that Maha Gummi seemed distracted, probably due to the question that had touched a hidden secret in Maha Gummi’s heart. It had been a long while since he had communicated with this Half-beastman Hybrid, whom he considered his most trusted confidant. This seemingly coarse individual, in fact, had an inner delicacy not inferior to any mortal.
"Lord, Half-beastmen have never understood what fear means. Losing life is not that big a deal, as long as it is worth the sacrifice. You have given Maha Gummi so much, and I am very satisfied. If the Church of Light truly wants to take all that belongs to us Half-beastmen, I believe even if Half-beastmen fight to the last man, they will never compromise, and I trust that the Barbarians feel the same way." Maha Gummi said each word deliberately, "This is not an empty claim, but the heartfelt sentiment of us Half-beastmen and Barbarians."
Komer was somewhat surprised to hear such words from Maha Gummi, as if giving an oath of allegiance on behalf of Half-beastmen and Barbarians. However, Maha Gummi seemed not to understand that this battle was not a true war but more like a duel between knights, where the number of those eligible to fight was limited, yet the outcome affected the fate of the entire Nicosia.
"Maha Gummi, there’s no need to be so serious and tense. I admit I’m not very confident about this battle. But there is a saying that tells us, until everything is completely concluded, all predictions and realities are false; we only look at the results," Komer said with a smile, "This is not a war of faith but of power. If someone wants to strip us of everything, we have no other choice. I never advocate for war unless it’s for peace, and this battle will lay the foundation for peace in Nicosia."
Maha Gummi stood up and bowed deeply, then calmly lifted his gaze to Komer: "Lord, Maha Gummi will not offer flattery. Everything my comrades, the Barbarians, and I now possess is granted by you. We are unable to assist in this fight and feel remorseful for that. However, we Half-beastmen and Barbarians will pray for you. The War God Mars will stand by your side and bless you. We look forward to your triumphant victory."
A sense of indescribable pride and satisfaction surged through Komer’s heart. These were the subjects who truly belonged to him. Although what he had given them was not much, and even deep inside he still harbored various prejudices, it was precisely these half-beastmen and barbarians, who more often than not he regarded with a utilitarian mindset, that had remained faithfully and loyally by his side, never once wavering. With such subjects, what regrets would he have even if he died in battle?
Over thirty knights filed one by one down the avenue stretching across the wilderness. Among the uniformly gray-cloaked knights, a few colorfully patched monks were especially conspicuous by contrast. The entire group seemed to maintain silence deliberately, and not a single sound was heard throughout the journey.
Noyola cast a glance at the tall knight riding beside him, whose body stood straight as a pine upon the saddle, unchanged for hours. Even Noyola had to admire the air of presence that the man unknowingly exuded.
"Lord Noyola, have we now entered the boundary of Homer’s territory?" The middle-aged knight’s gaze was detached, yet the invisible pressure that came with it was enough to make even Noyola, who never feared any man, feel a tinge of oppression.
"Hmm, if we cut diagonally from here, pass through the Busen Plain, cross the Greenland Forest, and traverse the Nissai River, we’ll enter Leon which belongs to the Greater Caucasus, a paradise for Half-Beastmen. Beyond Leon lies the Caucasus." Even before Caesar, Noyola had to slightly tone down his usual wild demeanor, but the arrogance deep in his bones was still unmistakable.
"It seems our opponent is quite confident, seeing as we’ve encountered no obstacles along the way."
"It’s probably not confidence, but rather an understanding of his own weight. In this situation, he wouldn’t nonsensically stand in the way of an oncoming carriage." Noyola also scoffed.
"Then does Lord Noyola think he will be waiting for us in the Caucasus?" the middle-aged knight countered.
"Of course, Komer is not one to give up easily. Although we are enemies, I must admit he is a person of significance. He cannot back down; for him, this is about the fate of Nicosia. If he avoids battle, all he has strived for these past years will slip away from him, even the Dark Forces behind him won’t tolerate such behavior. He has no choice but to fight!"
Noyola’s gaze towards the south became fervent. This battle was inescapable for everyone. It didn’t matter whether it was Komer, Caesar, or himself; they were all the same!
