Chapter 1014: Volume 33: Where to Go, Chapter 2: The Transcendental Balance
Komer nodded silently to himself. If he couldn’t even see this point, sitting on the throne of the Lord of Nicosia would have been in vain.
Be it struggling for territory or for the world, in the end, it was a struggle for the hearts of the people. If one couldn’t win the support of the populace of the territory, the rule established upon it would be like a tower built on sand, prone to collapse at any moment. Massive martial power could dominate for a while, but it wouldn’t last. Only by conquering an opponent in the depths of the mind could one claim true success.
Thinking up to this point, Komer couldn’t help but disdain Kennifer III, the one who brought him everything.
As the heir to the Dark Holy Church as well as the emperor of the Dark Empire, even though he might be incredibly powerful in magic and martial arts, he showed a level of stupidity seriously unbecoming of his station in some respects. With such a prestigious identity, he was actually defeated by the Church of Light under such superior conditions. Other than his limited political acumen, Komer could find no other reasons to describe the downfall of the Dark Lineage.
The Church of Light saw this point, and hence they grew strong. The Salvation Society had also realized this, which was why Welch and the others had lurked in the shadows for so many years, choosing this time to emerge and vie for people’s hearts.
Xerob was equally crafty, silently extending his reach into Nicosia, and even Komer himself, the nominal Chief of the Dark Lineage, only learned of it afterward. Clearly, Xerob did not trust him as the chief. The worldly power seemed to have blinded Komer, leaving no room for others.
Komer never believed that worldly power and the pursuit of faith could be separated. If the pursuit of faith lost the support of worldly power, it would always exist underground, and emerging would lead to numerous restrictions. Likewise, worldly power, if resisted by the pursuit of faith, would be greatly constrained and could even be toppled. Only those who were part of it could taste the mutually reinforcing transformation of these powers.
It was precisely because of this that the Church of Light, the Salvation Society, and the Dark Holy Church were sparing no effort to contend for Cartin. The unpredictable situation, along with the neighboring regions already conquered by the beastmen such as Jazair, had cast doubt among the Cartians on whether the Church of Light could help them fend off foreign attacks. It was under these circumstances that the Salvation Society, raising the banner of reforming neutrality, received such a warm welcome from so many supporters.
And these supporters, who were once devout followers of the Church of Light, had now become staunch advocates and subordinates of the Salvation Society.
The infiltration of the Dark Forces also put pressure on both the Church of Light and the Salvation Society, especially since the successes in Caucasus and Leon had laid a solid foundation for the Dark Forces to penetrate other regions of Nicosia. When Komer finally became the ruler of all Nicosia, it was only natural for the Dark Forces to extend their reach into other areas of Nicosia.
Rise above and seek balance.
When these words sprang to mind, Komer realized he had found a most suitable principle.
The best approach wasn’t to join in the fray directly but to step out of it, albeit with a precondition—that there be a perfect balance in the situation.
To rise above did not mean to abstain from exerting influence. On the contrary, in such a situation, one could use countless methods to maximize the use of worldly power for gaining more benefits.
Whether it is public sentiment or popular opinion, if well-grasped, it all comes down to what lies in one’s heart. How to maximize them for one’s use is what every ruler needs to contemplate.
Komer recognized he had no need to get involved in their entanglements and disputes. He could stand in a more appropriate position to view it all.
The power of the Church of Light was already in significant decline, but its foundation remained; the Salvation Society had transformed from the Church of Light, drawing on the essence of the Church of Light, yet its influence on the lower classes couldn’t match that of the Church of Light; the penetration of the Dark Lineage was astonishing, but in the ordinary populace, it wasn’t too profound, even unfamiliar. Snatching influence in Caucasus and Leon was easy, but to truly step into the hearts of mortals in regions like Homer, Galle, and Cartin still required a considerably long journey.
It was this situation, where each had its own strengths and concerns, that provided him with an opportunity. Komer mused silently, with the Church of Light unwilling to bow out, while the Salvation Society was aspiring to climb higher, and of course, the Dark Lineage would not just watch a good chance slip by — a silent war of gunpowder was already kindled.
"Maha Gummi."
"Lord." As if he had been waiting outside all along, before Komer’s words had even finished, Maha Gummi’s figure appeared at the door.
"Hmm, make arrangements, I would like to meet with both Vazinsky and Frenster," pondered Komer, as if he had made up his mind before speaking.
"Vazinsky? From the Sanct Western Church? Frenster? From Pericles Cathedral?" Although Maha Gummi had grown accustomed to his master’s surprising actions, the mention of these two names still made him involuntarily ask for confirmation.
"Do you suppose there are others of the same name and title that I need to see?" Komer asked in return.
"Oh, Sir, I apologize, I was somewhat startled. I am just concerned whether it would be too risky for you to meet with these two?" Maha Gummi quickly amended.
"Risky? Hmm, for me or for them?" Komer smiled thoughtfully, "If it were Lorenzo and Noyola, those two madmen, perhaps I’d give it some consideration. As for these two, being able to lead two major churches, they should likewise possess some rationality and intellect."
"May I know the purpose of meeting with them, Lord? I need to assess the potential and risk of the situation," Maha Gummi hesitated before speaking.
"Hmm, it’s not easy to say right now, but if I can reach an agreement with them on many issues, perhaps many of our troubles can be easily resolved. We don’t have any irreconcilable conflicts with them, do we?"
"Uh, certainly, of course, I understand, Lord. I will promptly provide you with a response." Maha Gummi answered quickly, sensing that his lord might have reached some kind of decision that could affect the entire future of Nicosia.
