Chapter 1006: 32 volumes Dark Clouds Enveloping, Chapter 24 Interlude

Vladimir Koff frowned; he sensed the anger in the other party’s words. He had not actually intended to sour relations with Miss Finitz, but the lady’s temper seemed a bit too much. He certainly did not want Miss Finitz to truly believe she could command the entire expedition.

He had wanted to say a few more words, but Vladimir Koff suddenly felt it was unnecessary to explain any further. After all, the purpose of the Black Flame Knights and Mages in coming to the Mist Flower Hills was simple: to resolve the threat that the Dark Elves and Cave Elves posed to the Forest Elves, including their backers, the Assyrian People.

Of course, the former task was relatively easy, but dealing with the Assyrians behind those fellas was not an easily resolved nuisance, especially given the distance of a thousand miles from the Caucasus to the Storm Ocean coast. Although Hayreddin’s maritime power had expanded to the coast of the Storm Ocean, the Assyrians were the undisputed masters on land. Without the support of ground forces, the Black Flame Knights and Mages alone would struggle to shake the foundation of the Assyrians, a fact both Vladimir Koff and Komer were aware of.

"We have plenty of time," were the words Komer left Vladimir Koff with before he departed. This meant that for now, Komer was content with Vladimir Koff leading the Black Flame Knights and Mages to just give the overly busybody Assyrians a smack. As for the future, when Nicosia’s domestic stability was achieved, it would not be too late to slowly address the issue.

Vladimir Koff already had a rough idea in mind: to utterly break the backbones of the Dark Elves and Cave Elves, rendering them powerless to act as the Assyrians’ underlings. The Assyrians alone could not simply step into the Mist Flower Hills, and this would significantly delay the Assyrians’ infiltration. If necessary, they could even make direct contact with the Assyrians, to probe their true strength and collect some data for future face-to-face confrontations.

"Eh?" Jack stopped in his tracks and raised his right hand to the sky; his companions immediately halted and adopted a guarded expression.

The intermittent clashing of metal came from afar, traveling such distance across this desolate land, it left Vladimir Koff uncertain about who would venture to this barren area to duel.

Members of the Black Flame Knights quickly spread out, forming a semicircular encirclement and swiftly approached the source of the noise, taking advantage of the cover provided by the shrubbery.

Vladimir Koff did not know what this sudden turn of events would bring to his journey through the Mist Flower Hills, but he disliked surprises. Sticking to his established plan was the most practical way forward—hoping for unexpected happenings was something only a fool would do.

Vladimir Koff was close enough to Finitz that he could even smell the faint scent of the Elf Woman’s body, "Are those fellows Forest Elves?"

"No, they aren’t Forest Elves; they are Dark Elves," Finitz took a deep breath. The fact that the Dark Elves had set foot on this land, which might as well be considered the Forest Elves’ backyard, worried her that some kind of unfortunate incident had occurred.

"Oh, then we can just sit back and let this bunch of Dark Elves have a taste of hardship," said Vladimir Koff, his expression unchanged. "It seems that this Slave Hunter Team has some tough characters in it." Anything unrelated to his mission could be observed with indifference—whether the Dark Elves slaughtered those slave traders or the Slave Hunter Team succeeded in capturing the Dark Elves was irrelevant to him.

The two Dark Elves were in a predicament under the siege of three Swordsmen and one crossbowman from the Slave Hunter Team. Even though the Dark Elves were quick as the wind and their coordination was impeccable, the three Swordsmen were not pushovers—the flickering sword light on their blades revealed that these guys were on the verge of mastering Fighting Qi, a critical step toward becoming experts.

That a Slave Hunter Team could achieve such proficiency was way beyond expectation, and the formidable strength displayed by the two Dark Elves also surprised Vladimir Koff.

"No, Mr. Vladimir Koff, I think we need to intervene. Such an untimely combination of geography and time, and yet Dark Elves appear here. Don’t you want to extract some information we desire from these two fellows? I wonder, when should we appear to reap the greatest benefits and serve our mission the best?"

Finitz’s gaze was firmly locked onto the tumultuous scene on the Battlefield, where the three Swordsmen may not have seemed very formidable in skill, but their timely coordination turned each escape attempt by the two Dark Elves into mere fantasy. And that crossbowman was excessive, just drawing his bow without shooting, using this threat to distract the Dark Elves, and it worked exceedingly well; the Dark Elves had to be constantly wary of the ever-watchful archer, which left them unable to focus on guarding against attacks.

"Hmm, you make some sense," nodded Vladimir Koff. "We don’t have much time to waste on them. Jack, Peter, Morssen, you three take down those two Dark Elves. As for those slave traders, leave them to the others to handle."

Jack nodded silently. Ever since he joined the Black Flame Knights, Jack had become exceptionally quiet, as if he had severed ties with his past life in an instant. The Black Flame Knights provided the best environment for Fallen Knights to hone their skills, free from any other constraints and restrictions, and Jack was always eager to participate in missions such as this expedition to the Mist Flower Hills.

A triangular attack formation was silently formed. The long-standing experience together made the Three Fallen Knights appear very coordinated and confident. Morssen and Peter were responsible for restriction, with Jack as the main attacker, or Jack and Morssen would restrain, leaving Peter to deliver a fatal blow—this was what the Fallen Knights pursued.

A powerful surge of spear energy brought forth a piercing screech, and the suddenly erupting Fallen Knights caught the two Dark Elves off guard. Morssen’s eerie sword shadow instantly cornered one Dark Elf, while Jack effortlessly knocked another Dark Elf three meters away. The whip-like sword in his hand had not even had time to reveal its abilities in front of Jack before flying up into the air. The Dark Elf cornered by Morssen was left without suspense, the tip of Peter’s spear pressed against his throat.
