Chapter 1002: Volume 32: Dark Clouds Enshroud, Chapter 20: The Tree Wishes to Stay Still but The Wind Will Not Cease
Watching Katya’s graceful figure leave, Komer couldn’t help but run his hand through his hair. What a conundrum, he thought. Katya appeared so desolate and forlorn, yet Komer knew that this woman was no less formidable than Renta, whose ambitions were burning bright, even though she was so vulnerable now.
Both women shared the blood of the Romanov family and both possessed an indomitable spirit. The difference was that Renta chose to seize her opportunities through cunning, while Katya opted for direct confrontation. It seemed that Renta had succeeded where Katya had fallen, but was that really the case? Komer asked himself.
Shaking his head instinctively, Komer did not know how to judge these half-sisters. Perhaps it was a resilience characteristic of the women of the Romanov family.
Now was not the time to consider where Katya would go from here. She could only seek temporary refuge in this place. Only by enduring could she achieve her goals. Komer understood the scorching sensation of the flame burning within, having experienced such torment himself. It was part of the journey towards maturity.
The wrap-up of the conflict in Cartin also signaled that there was no longer any need to push the war further in the entire region, including Livonia and the Black Forest. Of course, this was only temporary, just a moment to catch one’s breath. The Northern Alliance needed it, and so did he.
The word ’negotiations’ was repulsive to Komer. He could never accept it internally; it was nothing more than a fig leaf for the Atticans. What they needed now was a way to withdraw with dignity, and they also had to face the disastrous event of having so many knights taken prisoner. If this were not dealt with properly, even divine intervention reversing their fortunes would be futile.
Komer held many cards in his hand, and his trump card was these captive knights.
As for the Cretans, Komer had long dismissed them as inconsequential. An army that could not even defeat his own smaller detachments and yet dreamt of capturing the Black Forest and Livonia was simply biting off more than they could chew. Komer could only describe them as a disorganized alliance, a rabble that had lost its purpose and direction after the beastmen invaded Nicosia and occupied Jazair, even entertaining the thought of getting a share of Nicosia. Komer found it utterly laughable.
Komer did not underestimate the Atticans or the Cretans. In fact, purely in terms of military strength, he was no match for them. But the self-serving agenda of these two powers had provided him with an excellent opportunity. Now that his blunt strike had hit this alliance, Komer did not know if a complete collapse awaited these fellows.
The situation was settled, Komer mused. It seemed that most matters should be about wrapped up by now. There wouldn’t be much fluctuation in worldly conflicts for a while. The only remaining trouble was likely the issue with the Church of Light. Komer knew that the calm on his side in recent times was due to the internal disputes within the Church of Light. The Salvation Society’s strength was emerging like an iceberg, and doctrinal conflicts had already triggered turbulence among the Upper Echelons. Lord Noyola and Lorenzo’s dominance still had not achieved the desired results, and the continued retreat and silence of His Holiness the Pope only led to endless speculation among the clergy.
However, this does not mean that the Church of Light, this bane, has disappeared, nor does it mean they will quiet down; Komer never harbored such thoughts.
What he needed to do now was to firmly control the entire situation in Nicosia, making those from the Church of Light realize that only he was the true ruler of the whole of Nicosia. If they wanted to challenge him, it would be a provocation against the entire national power of Nicosia, and that would only lead to the Church of Light suffering more losses than gains.
Komer took a deep breath; the road ahead was still long, and the enemy wouldn’t just give up. They would only lose heart after complete despair, and he would not give them the slightest chance.
Vazinsky’s face was ashen, his usual calm and composed expression had long since vanished, and Onia stood by, somewhat dejected. The current situation showed signs of a total collapse beyond control, which was deeply disappointing.
Vazinsky had not anticipated that the situation would suddenly become so dire. When the Atticans and Cretans were discussing resolving the Cartin issue through military means, he even thought the war would present a one-sided situation. Perhaps the man from the Caucasus would only curl up West of Godeburg, hesitantly observing the situation, but he did not expect the opponent’s ambition and courage to be so great, daring to launch an attack immediately, and they had the Atticans and Cretans reeling from the first blow.
"Sir, the Salvation Society is still confronting Lord Noyola’s people, and I’m afraid this situation won’t undergo any substantial changes for a short time, unless His Holiness the Pope intervenes, ••••••"
Onia sighed inwardly as well. It seemed that the once glorious Church of Light had suddenly entered a quagmire, struggling to move forward. Even he could not understand how the once indifferent Romanov Dynasty had collapsed, yet the predicament of the Church of Light had become even worse.
"A bunch of short-sighted fools! They still haven’t grasped the situation and are still squabbling over trivialities, truly thinking they are promoting the grandeur of the Holy Teaching? The Salvation Society has lain dormant for decades. How could it be such a coincidence that they suddenly emerge now? Onia, don’t you think there is some kind of connection behind this?"
Vazinsky’s words seemed disjointed at first, but Onia immediately understood the implication. "Sir, are you saying someone is manipulating and supporting that bunch from the Salvation Society from behind? Could it be from the Caucasus?"
"Hmph, what do you think? I’ve always been suspicious of how the Salvation Society chose this time to make a move, precisely when the Atticans and Cretans had united to act against Cartin. Now it seems that those from the Salvation Society have clearly reached some tacit agreement with certain people, and even harbor ideas of establishing their own faction. At this juncture, we are in a dilemma, only hating that those from the Religious Court cannot distinguish the severity of matters and keep entangled in incessant disputes, which only gives Komer more opportunities to catch his breath," Vazinsky took a deep breath to calm himself down as quickly as possible.
