Chapter 1001: Volume 32 Dark Clouds Sweep Over Chapter 19 Speaking with Power

The Half-beast soldiers swarming out from the castle ultimately shattered Fumel’s illusions; he had underestimated the ferocity of the Half-Beast warriors.

Although Dragumo also experienced some brief hesitation, the innate explosive valor of the Half-Beasts still allowed Dragumo to overcome his momentary concerns. Under such circumstances, if he were still hesitant to pursue them outside the castle, and thus lose a chance to turn the tide, Dragumo couldn’t forgive himself.

The charge of the Half-Beasts heavily struck the rear of the Cretans, and although they also mustered the courage to desperately counterattack, the situation had already deeply affected the Cretans’ spirits. Their main objective was now retreat. Soldiers without the will to fight are no longer soldiers; they are just a group of pitiful beings struggling to survive.

However, the Half-Beasts had no habit of showing sympathy for the weak on the battlefield. In their eyes, there were only enemies and comrades on the battlefield, and captives were considered spoils of war to be dealt with at will unless you could convince them that you were utterly unthreatful and could offer benefits. Otherwise, the only fate was decapitation.

The final blow of the Half-Beasts inflicted a huge toll on the Cretans hurriedly attempting to return home. Although Fumel tried hard to prevent the rampage of the Half-Beasts, the Cretans who had lost their fighting spirit performed far below their courage shown in favorable times. Now, they just wanted to leave this heartbreaking place as soon as possible; whoever could lead was the lucky one.

The precise strikes of the Basarabians thoroughly shattered the dreams of the Cretans. At this moment, their only desire was to withdraw as much viable strength as possible from Livonia and Black Forest. The invasion of Nicosia had been declared a failure, a complete failure. Regardless of how the Atticans performed now, it was no longer relevant to the Cretans. In fact, the Atticans were faring worse than the Cretans had imagined; they too faced a mortifying and humiliating defeat in Cartin.

When Komer received the news of victory from Cartin and Black Forest, he could only strive to suppress the joy in his heart, for sitting in front of him was Katya, just disembarked from Plovdiv, the former ruler of Cartin.

In a moment of rapid change, Komer couldn’t help but quietly lament the fickleness of fate; the master of the house had become today’s guest under his roof. Such a massive contrast would be tough for anyone less resolute to adapt to.

Katya also sensed the change in Komer’s emotions. The letter Komer held in his hand was undoubtedly the main reason affecting his emotional shifts, perhaps related to the ongoing fierce combat of the armies at the frontlines. Nevertheless, Katya knew that all of this was actually irrelevant to her; regardless of who won or lost, Cartin would never return to her hands. She felt an internal discontent and hoped to witness a scenario where she could vent her built-up resentments.

"Komer, any changes?"

"Oh, there’s nothing extraordinarily unexpected. The Atticans have completely withdrawn from Cartin, and they hope to negotiate peacefully over the status of Cartin. The conflicts in Black Forest and Livonia are still ongoing, but it seems the luck of the Cretans might have run out," Komer didn’t hide much.

"Negotiate over the status of Cartin? What right do they have to make such demands? Utter shamelessness! A bunch of robbers!" Katya’s anger ignited instantly. Although she was no longer the ruler of Cartin, she was, after all, Nicosian. Since when did outsiders get the right to dictate terms about Nicosia’s territory?

"Katya, are you just realizing this now? That’s why I told Fran to reply to their envoy, perhaps we should negotiate over the status of Princeton (an autonomous region in the east of Attica Duchy, adjacent to the Former Malon Duchy)," Komer’s casual smile and the audacity in his tone were evident.

"Oh, your words will drive the Atticans mad," Katya adjusted her mood, giving a graceful smile. She was aware that she was no longer the ruler of Cartin, and the Romanov Dynasty had ended. Her counterpart was no longer that remote lord from Caucasus. Nicosia now lay prostrate at his feet.

"Drive them mad? No, perhaps when the time is right, they will see my suggestion as prescient. Not just the Atticans, but the Cretans too will pay for their rashness; no one can commit wrongs without paying a price - no one." Komer’s proud smile emerged, "If they dared to invade Nicosia thoughtlessly, they should have realized that the same misfortune might strike them as well. Might makes right, the winners are the kings. They seem to believe that power is the only rule deciding how the world works. Well then, let’s speak with power."

Katya was shaken by Komer’s domineering words. When had this man become so assertive and mature? The slightly grown stubble, the stern contours of his cheeks, those deep eyes like the stars, along with that strongly suggestive body language, Katya realized for the first time that the man before her seemed entirely different from any time before. Even in bed, she had sensed only the vigor of his youth, but now, what she felt was an indescribable maturity – the real essence of a man.

Komer also realized that his words seemed to have touched on some of Katya’s painful memories. He regretted it, but that was the reality. Cartin was in his hands; he could no longer return even an inch of Nicosia’s land to the members of the Romanov family. The Romanov family had become history, a fact Katya must also understand. What did she need then? Emotional comfort or financial compensation? What could he give her?

The room fell into silence suddenly. Katya soon realized her distraction and also noticed the discomfort it caused the other party. She thought, somewhat self-mockingly, that maybe he was anxiously thinking how to deal with her, the last heiress of the Romanov Dynasty, a woman who had an intimate physical relationship with him but whose feelings and thoughts were far apart from his, and yet it appeared that she was quite scheming.

If she were in his shoes, what would she do? Katya felt an overwhelming surge of emotions; sourness, bitterness, surrounding her. (To be continued. For further details, please visit www.qidian.com. More Chapters are available, support the author, support authorized reading!)
