The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 98. An Intruder
Chapter 98: 98. An Intruder
A soft knock, quickly followed by another.
Mauve sat immediately, she rubbed her eyes even though she had not been sleeping. "Come in," she called out.
The door opened and Mill walked in holding a board. Mauve frowned as she tried to decipher what it was. It took a minute but when she saw the tiny ink bowl she understood immediately.
"Sorry, Mauve." Mill said as she walked closer. She dropped the board on the table.
"I got distracted and completely forgot I was supposed to bring this to you and then it took forever to find it in the study."
"It is no problem, Mill. I literally have all day." Mauve said with a smile.
Mill’s face fell, "I know it must be annoying to be stuck here."
"It’s not so bad," Mauve replied.
It wasn’t bad, it was the worst. All she had done was stay in bed all day and when she wasn’t in bed, she was pacing the room like a lost soul.
She was tempted to ask for a game even though she would have to play it by herself, she didn’t mind. As soon as all this was over, the only time she would spend in her room would be to sleep.
"That’s good," Mill replied.
However, she wasn’t sure now was a good time. Mill looked like she had not had a break. Her hair was in disarray and her clothes had stains on them. Mauve wondered what she was up to.
"How about you? How’s preparing for the party going? The guests have arrived, I only met one." She rambled on.
She knew Mill was in a hurry and she felt bad for keeping her but she needed to talk to someone.
"Hectic, all the Lords want to be attended to immediately. I have to go. I will bring your lunch as soon as it is ready but if you would like anything now, let me know and I will assign a servant to bring it up for you."
Mill’s eyes darted toward the door and back to Mauve. She looked as if she was about to break out into a run.
"No, it is fine. You may leave. I am okay, I don’t need anything else. I will keep busy with that," she said and pointed to the writing material.
Mill smiled faintly, "Alright. Have a fun time writing."
The words were barely out of her mouth before Mill fled to the door. Mauve waved and made sure she had a bright look on her face until the door closed. As soon as she did, her face fell.
She turned her face to the writing materials and Mauve felt fear. She picked up the board and placed it in her chair. She picked up the quill, arranged the paper, and got ready to write.
Mauve hand shook as she held the quill. She dapped it into some ink and brought it closer to the paper but she immediately pulled it away. She didn’t think she would have more than one trial.
However, that wasn’t the problem. She could remember the last time she had written anything. She never had a reason to.
She tried again but lost the nerve just before the quill could make contact with the paper. She was certain she would have the handwriting of a chicken.
She would write a couple of things on the ground but using a long branch and a fancy feather wasn’t the same thing especially since she was supposed to write it tiny.
Mauve tried again and wrote the letter D, it was horrendous. Instead of straight lines, she had squiggly lines. She stopped immediately and she got sight of the dresser.
Mauve moved immediately, it will definitely be more comfortable for her to write there, and hopefully, it would improve her writing. She sat by the dresser and spread out the paper, bringing the candlelight even closer so she could see.
She leaned forward and dapped the quill into the ink and tried again. Her forehead furrowed in determination and her lips a thin line. She raised her head a minute later as she admired her work.
She had written the opening without a hitch, except for the first letter. She smiled to herself and dabbed the quill in more ink, not that there was any need to but she had no clue how she would start and was trying to buy some time.
"Dear Vae," she read. "I hope this letter finds you well..." She paused and frowned. "Then what?"
"Do I ask more about her or I should tell her about myself?" Mauve sighed.
She knew Vae might not be able to reply but at least she wanted to send the letter to tell that she was doing fine. It will ease her mind.
"I hope this letter finds you well," she read it as slowly as she wrote it. "How... are... you? How is your family? Are you married now? I’m sure you’re not yet, you haven’t been away for that long but if you are that’s wonderful news and I am sorry I couldn’t make it to the wedding."
Mauve paused and studied her work. The writing was horrendous but at least it was readable, she hoped. The content, however, was her major worry, she didn’t really know what to write.
She picked up the paper and held it for the light, staring at it. She frowned. There was no way this could be sent, this was a draft. When she was done crafting the letter, she would ask for another paper and rewrite this.
Hopefully, her writing would be better and more presentable. Now, it just looked like someone gave a child a pen. Mauve eyes ran through the written piece and she judged herself, sparing nothing.
She squinted and sighed and the thought of continuing didn’t sit well with her. She thought to take a break as her fingers were already hurting from holding the quill too hard but she knew it was just an excuse to not write this anymore.
Suddenly, the door flew open and Mauve jumped, the paper fell from her hands. Nobody entered her room without knocking except Jael and he would never open the door in such a manner.
She turned around to see a vampire by the door and jumped to her feet. "Who are you?" She asked as her heart rate spiked.
He closed the door and walked to her with a nasty grin on his face. It made her skin crawl which was weird as he was actually good-looking.
He had long brown hair which stopped at his shoulders, she couldn’t really see his eyes from here but he had a sharp nose and high cheekbones.
His grin however looked pasted on his face and he looked more like he was about to attack her than he was happy to see her.
"Sorry to intrude," he said, still grinning.
The closer he got the farther she wanted to get away from but she could move and that wasn’t because her legs wouldn’t move but because she was stuck between the dresser and the chair.
She gripped the table, "How may I help you?" She asked, surprised her voice was working.
"Help me?" He chuckled and his smile immediately fell. "I see why he keeps you hidden."
His eyes trailed her from head to toe. He stopped in front of her and stretched out his hand to touch her. She leaned back to avoid his hand.
"Such pale skin," he said and trailed the side of her face. "And you’re good to look at too."
Mauve closed her eyes. Every inch of her screamed, she wanted to run away from here but she couldn’t move and this time she knew it had nothing to do with the chair in front of her. Her legs weren’t listening to her.
He leaned forward and bent his head downward. "You smell nice, clean," he mumbled. "Nothing like the blood slaves I had."
"I bet you do whatever he wants without putting up a fight. You are not tied up which means you don’t plan to run away. Never made any attempt. All my blood slaves wanted to escape, I had to keep them chained to the bed. Not because I thought they could escape but because I didn’t want to feed them to wild animals or worse a paler. It is hard to transport a human."
"Your blood smells rich too. I expected nothing less from a human princess. I had to deal with peasants." His finger trailed the side of her neck, he pressed the scars. "I see he has been busy."
Mauve tried to lean back but she couldn’t move. She could feel water in the corner of her eyes. Her heartbeat echoed in her ears, to say she was scared with an understatement. She was terrified.
His fangs grew and Mauve’s eyes widened. "Do you think he will notice? Vampires have no smell you see. I’m sure he will." He smirked. "You see, I want him to."
