The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 94. Human Mate

Chapter 94: 94. Human Mate

"I see your manners have not improved," Lady Marceline’s voice echoed in the hall. "You should know better than to keep guests waiting."

Jael’s expression darkened as he approached the table. His eyes scanned the table, his guards were already at the table as well as the rest of the household.

They all stood up simultaneously as he walked in. He neither increased his pace nor reduced it as he approached the table. He took his seat.

"Sire," they said before taking their seats.

"Tell me you have a proper excuse for being late even your personal guards were late." Lady Marceline continued.

Jael winced, it was obvious she had no intention of dropping the subject. Jael hated having to explain himself. It was annoying that she could talk to him like this as if the disruption never happened, as if he had no reason to be angry with her.

"Next time, I will show up with the blood of the paler on my hands. I am sure Alaric will find that amusing. Would you like to see it?" He asked, stretching out his bandaged palm.

Lord Alaric immediately tensed up and hung onto his mate. He had been sitting by himself but as soon as the words left Jael’s mouth, he rested his head on Lady Marceline’s shoulder, hiding his face from view.

"Jael," she called and rubbed Alaric’s head. "That’s not funny."

"Shall we begin?" He asked, completely ignoring her.

The servants moved quickly as they dished out the meal. As soon as Jael got his, he dug in. He wanted to be out of the room as soon as possible. He could tell this was only going to get worse.

Three spoons in, he noticed Seraphino staring hard at him. Jael dropped his cutlery and sat upright. "How may I help you?" He glared.

"Oh," he chuckled. "Forgive me, Sire. I got carried away for a second."

He shifted his gaze as he said those words and Jael returned to his meal. He hated how alert he was, he could hear every sound, every movement and he could feel every stare.

"Sire," Seraphino.

Jael slowly raised his head from his meal and gripped his fork tighter, just in case he needed a weapon. "Yes," he replied, not hiding his displeasure.

"I don’t see her anywhere," Seraphino said, looking around.

"Her?" Jael asked, arching his head to the side.

He knew precisely who Seraphino was talking about and it was because of the likes of him that he refused to let her roam the castle at a time like this. However, he had no intention of making it easy for Seraphino.

"Yes, your um..." He paused as he thought. "Yes, human mate."

"She is not his mate!" Lady Jevera and Erick said simultaneously. "Do not insult his Grace," Erick added.

"Ah, I did not mean it like that. I apologize. I couldn’t remember the human term. Cherry," he called softly, turning to the petite vampire by his side.

"Yes, Lord Seraphino." She said and brought her head down.

"You are familiar with all things human, what is the equivalent of a mate?"

"Husband, wife..." she mumbled.

"Wife, yes. Thank you." He said and affectionately touched her cheeks, she leaned into his hand and he took his hand away.

"I apologize for that, Sire." Seraphino. "You see now that all my humans were taken, I seem to have forgotten important things."

For a split second, his smile fell and his face turned stone cold. The expression didn’t say long enough for anyone to see it but Jael certainly didn’t miss it as he was looking for it.

"That’s too bad," Jael replied and wiped the corner of his lips.

"Where is your human wife?" Seraphino asked with a strained smile.

"I am afraid she won’t be joining us. I figured you wouldn’t want to share the table with a human."

"As long as she sits quietly in the corner, I have no problems being around blood slaves especially when they are not mine." Seraphino said.

Jael tried not to let his feelings show on his face. He knew Seraphino was deliberately trying to get to him. Falling for his obvious antics would be embarrassing.

"Why find out? Her presence isn’t important." Jael replied and dropped his cutlery. "Enjoy the complimentary gifts I left in your rooms." He said to the table and stood to his feet.

Seraphino brought wine to his lips but as Jael had expected, Seraphino didn’t say another word. Just watched him leave.

Jael walked out of the dining hall, his head churning. He wasn’t sure he could take another day, let alone three days of this. He walked briskly but instead of heading upstairs, he went for the door.

"Sire," Danag’s voice called to him. "May I ask where you are headed?"

Jael stopped walking and turned around. "Your worry is starting to be a pain in the neck, Danag."

Danag smirked, "I am only concerned for my Lord’s safety. If it is the paler? Worry not, Erick and Danag can handle it."

"No, I need some air."

"Okay, I can accompany you."

"Alone," he said stiffly and turned to look at Danag. "Alone," he repeated. "I will be back before the last meal."

"That’s too far out, Sire. Anything can happen out there. Two hours, your Grace, or I will come to look for you myself."

"Is that a threat?" Jael asked and his eyes glowed.

Danag immediately raised his hands. "Of course not but the rumors of palers running around are no joke and at an important like this, we can’t afford to not be cautious."

"Whatever," Jael replied and pushed open the doors.

"Two hours, Sire."

Jael walked out of the doors and broke into a run before the doors even closed. He needed to relax, responsibilities were stressful but this was something he decided to do after running away for ten years.

Not only that, he returned with something so drastic. He had been able to get away with it as he was King but he knew it was only a matter of time before something would happen.

He got to the stream and sat on a nearby rock, the water was soothing, with steady flow. He couldn’t remember when this place became his favorite place to be when he wanted to relax. However, he had been coming here for as long as he could remember.

Jael sat there for a while and he started to feel better. The night noises of crickets chirping and frogs croaking were weirdly soothing. Even the mosquitoes singing in his ears didn’t annoy him. None of them tried to bite him, they knew better.

Jael stood up from the rock and stretched. He should go back to the castle but he didn’t want to do that yet. Besides, he couldn’t get the paler out of his mind, so giving the task to Erick didn’t sit right with him even though Damon would accompany him.

Besides, it was on his way to the castle. Well, completely untrue as it was literally past the castle but he had time. Even if he didn’t, it would put his mind at ease.

He just wanted to check that the paler has grown his limbs back even though that was completely impossible, it would need at least twelve hours to completely regenerate, considering the amount of injury Jael had left on the creature.

Jael squinted and started walking, he went past the dry path. He was only running for a few minutes before the castle came into view but he didn’t stop. He went past it without hesitation, hoping that Danag didn’t sense his presence, the vampire would definitely come after him.

Locating the paler wasn’t difficult. Aside from the fact that it was less than a hundred kilometers away from the castle. The smell of its blood was also strong enough to lead him there.

Jael frowned as he got closer, he could tell he was close but the smell was telling him otherwise. It was leading him away from the scene.

Jael squinted his eyes as his mind came up with excuses. He has been running for an hour now. Maybe all that running had affected his nose.

There was also the fact that it was a slightly windy night and since the wind was blowing away from him, it was also blowing the smell of the paler. Still, they all sounded like excuses in his head because only a tornado could possibly dissipate a smell so strong.

Jael slowed his pace as he got closer. He approached the creature carefully. He could see the limbs he had ripped off on the ground as he walked closer but as soon as he got to the tree, Jael couldn’t contain the shock at the sight before him.

The paler was gone, and the rope lay on the ground, partly around the tree. Jael immediately rushed towards it, he bent and picked it up. With just a glance he could tell that the rope had been cut. He heard a sharp sound and he stood to his feet, alert and ready to fight.
