The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 91. Lady Marceline

Chapter 91: 91. Lady Marceline

Mauve adjusted in bed as she got comfortable. The pain in her abdomen didn’t feel any better but at least she was full. It was best to not handle this on an empty stomach.

She groaned and rolled to her side. She was exceedingly annoyed that she had to stay in her room for three days straight and still was. This new situation didn’t change how she felt.

The fact that she couldn’t even go to the rooftop was a bit depleting. Especially as she had just planted some seeds and was excited to watch them grow.

Of course, they wouldn’t begin to germinate immediately but she was content to just water the soil and sit in the open air. She could read a book, it definitely beats being stuck in here for three straight days. It sounded like torture.

She replayed the conversation with Jael and winced. Their relationship was strained these days, she figured the party preparation was taking a toll on him. He had not slept in her room for two days now.

She closed her eyes and tried to shut down her thoughts. Being awake wasn’t helping her case, especially the occasional waves of pain. If she could fall asleep, she knew she would feel tremendously better by the time she awoke.

A knock pulled Mauve to an upright position. She frowned. Did Mill forget something? The vampire had said she would leave her alone to rest and considering how everybody was quite busy. She made sure to stay out of their way.

"Come in," she said, a little hesitant.

It wasn’t Jael, she was certain. He never knocked and he wouldn’t use her front door. He only ever used the connecting door and he always strolled in like he owned the place and technically, he did.

Mauve’s mouth dropped open at the vampires that walked through her door. A tall lanky female vampire with a male vampire that looked as though he was permanently attached to her arm.

Mauve didn’t know how to react to the situation so she just remained in bed. She gathered the sheets to herself and stared.

The female vampire’s figure was pretty impressive. Her waist was so thin, Mauve was certain she could easily wrap her arm around it.

Her black hair gleamed in the candlelight. It was tied in a high bun and Mauve could visibly see how tight the bun was, every single strand of hair was pulled back, and nothing was out of place.

It hurt to look at the vampire’s forehead which was accentuated as the result of the hairstyle. Her eyes were slanted and she had on make-up that really drew attention to how pale she was. She had a small nose and an even smaller mouth.

She had on a wine dress but Mauve was sure it was a brighter color, it was just the candlelight that gave it a dark hue. The dress stopped on the floor, and not even the tips of her shoes showed when she walked.

The man on her arm was hunched and he kind of hid his face as he hung onto the lanky vampire so Mauve couldn’t really see his face. All she could see was his long blond hair.

He was almost as tall as the female vampire but since he had his head on her shoulders and his back slouched, Mauve couldn’t really determine his height.

Mauve wondered how the female vampire could easily pull him with her. Mauve figured it must be difficult to walk with him so close to her, especially with that dress on.

They both stopped directly in front of her bed and Mauve realized she wasn’t breathing. She took a deep breath and braced herself for whatever was coming, she didn’t bother trying to talk as she knew her mouth wouldn’t work.

The female vampire arched her head to the side as she studied Mauve. "You look pale," she said.

There was no hostility in her voice and her voice sounded like a bird whistling. The vampire’s eyes roamed Mauve’s face picking apart every feature.

"Are you okay?" Her high eyebrows arched weirdly and Mauve felt her face break into a smile.

She nodded.

"Hmm, don’t look like it. A few shades paler and I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between you and a vampire. Are you sick perhaps?"

As she spoke, Mauve realized she couldn’t place her age in human years. She looked like a fifty year old human woman and at the same time, she looked younger. Mauve found her studying the vampire’s features even more.

"You could say that," Mauve managed to reply, she did feel gravely ill.

"Vampire life is a little too tough on you. You don’t look like you will last long."

Mauve expression instantly fell.

"Alaric," she called and turned the vampire that hung on her shoulders. "If you don’t lift your head, you won’t see her. We came all this way."

He mumbled something Mauve couldn’t hear.

"Alaric," she called gently.

Alaric slowly raised his head from her shoulders, he didn’t stand to his full height but turned his head so he could look at Mauve.

Mauve was stunned at the face that looked at her. He was beautiful, that was the only word she could think to describe him. With emerald eyes and a sharp jawline.

The rest of his features were soft and delicate, his nose sharp and pointed. He looked young, very young. He looked to be in his early twenties at best.

"She is small," he mumbled.

"That’s what I thought too."

"And pale, very pale."

"Yes, we have seen a handful of humans. None of them looked this pale." She lifted her hand and tucked some hair behind his right ear.

Mauve could only sit and watch as they talked about her as if she wasn’t here. She couldn’t comprehend why they thought she was pale, she was getting more sunlight now than she had since she got here.

"She said she might be sick," she said.

"Oh, I know humans get sick."

"Pathetic," she replied.

"Marceline," Alaric called.

"It is the throat and it is one of the reasons we will always be better than..."

The door flew open with such force that Mauve was surprised they didn’t fly off their hinges. Mauve jerked at the loud sound. The door opened to reveal a very displeased Jael.

"What are you doing here?" He asked loudly.

"Jael," she called, turning to look at him. "It is so good to see you."

"You didn’t answer my question." He said sternly, his brows dipping so hard, they could also touch his eyes.

"As you didn’t offer a proper greeting, nephew of mine. I haven’t seen you in years."

Mauve’s eyes widened as she realized she was staring at Jael’s aunt. She wouldn’t have guessed. They looked nothing alike aside from the black hair but that was definitely not enough determinant.

"I am not your nephew!" He said and walked into the room. "You still haven’t answered my question, Lady Marceline."

"Lady," she gasped. "Also you are my nephew. Your mother and I were practically sisters."

"Cousins, Lady Marceline."

She gasped, "You used to call me Auntie."

"When I was ten. What are you doing here?"

"You haven’t changed one bit, a track mind you’ve got. We came to see the human. You know Alaric can’t travel so we couldn’t attend the wedding, I would have loved to see it."

"You have seen her now leave."

"You shouldn’t treat your aunt like this."

"You are not my aunt."

"A wee thing you got there," Lady Marceline continued like Jael didn’t say a single word. "She is pale, you understand that humans need sunlight, right?"

"I don’t need you to tell me what humans need. For someone who stays cooped up in her house, don’t act like you know a lot. Get out. You’ve seen her."

Marceline sighed, "Alaric, shall we?"

He nodded and she took a step forward pulling him alongside.

She stopped walking when she got beside him. "It has been ten years, Jael. Blaming me won’t bring them back." She stretched out her hand to touch him and he smacked her hand away.

Lady Marceline sighed again, "I am always on your side and irrespective of what you say, I am your aunt. Bye human girl, it was almost nice to see you."

The sound of the door closing echoed in the room and Mauve immediately froze up. Her back straightened and she felt Jael’s gaze on her.

He was angry, she could see. She felt her heart race increase as she realized if he didn’t calm down, she was about to be the receiver of his anger, and considering how their last conversation had gone, she didn’t expect this to be any better.

He took a step forward and she winced, bending her head. He kept walking and stopped just in front of her bed, where Lady Marceline had been standing a few minutes ago.

"Mauve," he called and she shivered. She felt a chill go up her spine.
