Chapter 731. Sabrina Left

Chapter 731: 731. Sabrina Left

Sabrina only stayed at the castle for a few days before she decided to return home. Mauve offered to see her to the door, but there was no way Jael would let her do that all by herself, so he was right beside her as she stood in front of the doors, ready to send Sabrina off.

"Thank you for your hospitality," Sabrina said with a curtsy.

"Don’t mention it," Mauve replied with glee. "It was our pleasure." Jael simply grunted; not once had he said actual words to Sabrina.

"Take care of yourself, my lady, and if perhaps you might require my help, do not hesitate to send for me," Sabrina offered.

Jael’s expression immediately darkened at this and worried that he might say something mean to Sabrina again, Mauve quickly cut in. "I will, and I wish you a safe trip home."

Sabrina smiled and started down the stairs after another curtsy. "Bye," Mauve called out, waving her hand a little too hard as she watched Sabrina walk off. Sabrina lifted her hand and waved back to Mauve.

"That’s enough," Jael said and immediately started to pull her inside the castle.

Mauve didn’t protest. She had been surprised he had been willing to let her step out of the castle just to see Sabrina off. It was just a little after the first meal, which meant Mauve still had the whole night to herself. She wasn’t sure what she planned to do yet, but she doubted it would involve Jael.

"Your room?" he asked.

"Nope, the library. I am supposed to meet Louis there. I am sure he is already waiting for me."

Jael’s eyes narrowed. "What are you always doing in the library with Louis? At this point, you must have finished reading all the books there with the amount of time you spend in there with him."

Jael sounded irritated. Mauve knew the time that she spent with Louis bothered him, and if it had been anyone else, he would have canceled it already. She hoped he wouldn’t do that now. However, she definitely couldn’t tell him what they were up to; that would upset him more than the fact that she was spending that much time with Louis.

"Well, Louis is great company. We talk, have tea, and sometimes Mill joins us." It had been a while since this happened, but Mauve didn’t know what else to say and figured bringing in a third party would hopefully dampen Jael’s anger.

"Is Mill going to be joining you today?" Jael asked.

Mauve blinked. She had hoped he would drop the topic, but that didn’t seem to be the case. "I don’t know if she is free."

"I will send for her then," he replied, and before she could respond to this, Jael gestured toward a nearby servant. "You, fetch Mill," he commanded.

The servant was startled that Jael spoke to them, and it took a second for them to process the information, but as soon as they did, they dispersed.

"What if she is busy?" Mauve asked, staring at Jael with an angry face.

"I am sure she is not too busy for you."

"You didn’t even tell the servant where you would be," Mauve said.

"I am sure they can take a guess."

Mauve sighed. She didn’t want to argue. Sabrina had just left, which meant Jael had nothing more to fret over, so he was about to make a big deal out of her routine. Anyway, this was just to satisfy him. As soon as Jael was gone, she would tell Mill to leave too.

Mauve didn’t need to knock on the library door, but she did. It only felt proper to warn Louis. She was sure he wouldn’t have the spell books out because, unlike her, he was actually very cautious about this, but she still wanted to give him some heads-up.

"What are you knocking for?" Jael asked, giving her an odd look.

"Eh, well, Louis always opens the door for me." This had never happened, as Jael often dropped her inside the library, and if he couldn’t, the guards would open the door for her.

He paused for an odd amount of time, and Mauve started to wonder if he had seen through her lie, but he simply narrowed his eyes and said, "I am right here."

"Sorry," she forced a smile. "Habit."

Jael gave her a grumpy stare before he pushed the doors open. Louis was seated at the desk with his eyes glued to a book. It didn’t look like a magic book, and Mauve realized she had actually never seen him read a normal book before. Also, how did he figure out something was wrong with just that knock?

He reluctantly lifted his eyes from the book as they walked closer. "Sire," he whispered and then turned to Mauve and gave her a nod. Louis recently tended not to address her directly whenever Jael was around.

Jael, however, didn’t respond to his greeting. He just helped Mauve into her seat and pointed toward the shelves. "What book do you want to read today?" he asked.

"Hmm," Mauve said as if in deep thought. "I haven’t decided yet."

Jael jerked his head toward her. "Do you come here even though you have no plans to read anything?"

"I don’t only read, I told you."

Louis locked eyes with her, and she could clearly see the question in them, but before Jael would notice, he locked his eyes on the book again. Mauve was sure the book wasn’t that interesting, but this situation was starting to get even more hilarious.

"Well, you don’t have to be here all the—"

The door opening cut into Jael’s words, and Mill walked into the space. "Sire," she curtsied. "My lady, Lord Louis. You called for me, Sire."

"Yes," Jael replied. "I am sure it must be boring with just the two of them here. Would you keep Mauve company for the rest of the day?"

"Here with them?" Mill asked.

Mauve frowned a little. She could see the frightened look in Mill’s eyes. It wasn’t enough for her to worry, but it was enough to pique her curiosity. She glanced at Louis, but he didn’t even spare Mill a glance; his gaze was still glued to the book.

"Yes, or is there something more important that requires your attention?" Jael asked darkly. The tone in his voice didn’t leave any room for argument, so even if Mill did have something else that was more important, there was no way she could say that she did.

"No," she shook her head. "I was just wondering, as my lady and Louis always spend the time in the library without me bothering them."

"Well, that has changed," Jael stated and started walking toward the door. "I will be back before the second meal."

"Okay," Mauve said, and Mill bowed.

The sound of the door closing felt ridiculously loud, and it was like Mauve was plunged into a room of awkwardness. Mill kept her eyes glued to the floor, and Louis’s gaze was on the book. Neither of them spoke. She looked from one person to the other. If she hadn’t thought about it before, she would now. Something happened between these two, but when and what?

"Mill," Mauve called. "Would you be so kind as to get me tea or some juice? It doesn’t matter which. I’d just like something to drink."

"Of course, my lady," Mill said, and with that, she was gone.

Mauve frowned. She had seen the relieved look on Mill’s face at the errand. Did she really not want to be in the same room as Louis? Now that she thought about it, she had not seen them together in a while. Well, it wasn’t like they were together, but there were always situations when they would run into one another.

"What’s this about?" Louis asked, pulling her from her thoughts.

"Oh, no idea. I think he wants to cancel this, but he doesn’t have any reason to."

"So he decides to plant a spy."

"Is that what you think Mill is?" Mauve asked with a laugh.

"Of course not, but we both know he is going to ask her all about it later. I am not surprised he is doing this; I am surprised he is doing this now."

"Don’t worry about it. Mill can’t remain here for too long."

"Why didn’t you stop him? You can’t learn anything at this rate."

"How could I have done that? He would have immediately grown suspicious. He is just still annoyed that Sabrina came around, and I was supportive about it."

"Hmm," Louis said. "I guess no lesson today. Is there any other book you’re interested in?"

"No, I am fine with anything."

"You can have mine," Louis said, pushing the book to her.

"I thought you were reading it."

"Of course not. As soon as I heard your knock, I knew something was definitely amiss, so I just picked a random book and pretended to read it."

Mauve laughed. "I would have sworn you were engrossed."

"No way."

"Can I ask you something?" Mauve suddenly blurted.

"Yes," Louis leaned back with a look of disapproval on his face.

"What happened between you and Mill?"
