Chapter 729. Open-minded
Chapter 729: 729. Open-minded
Mauve couldn’t help but chuckle at Sabrina’s joke. "You don’t have to make a joke like that, Lady Sabrina," Mauve said.
"A joke? I was deathly serious."
"If you say so," Mauve replied as she looked awkwardly around the room, unsure of where she should go.
"Please, have a seat," Sabrina gestured to a chair, and Mauve was quick to move to the corner of the room where the chair lay.
"Thank you," she replied as she got comfortable.
Sabrina sat close to her with a smile on her face. "You know, it still feels unreal," she started.
Mauve looked a little puzzled. "The pregnancy?"
"Not just that—everything else. The fact that the Primus marked you and you’re his mate now, the lords sort of agreed to it, and now you’re pregnant." The corners of her eyes crinkled slightly as she smiled.
"You’re right," Mauve said as she looked around the room. "It is unreal."
"Congratulations again."
"You don’t have to do that. I came here to properly welcome you and thank you for making the journey here. I am sure it must have been dangerous."
Sabrina shook her head. "It was more selfish than selfless, and to be honest, I thought the Primus was going to kick me out."
"What? I would never have allowed that," Mauve said with conviction.
"And I am grateful. I was thrilled about the idea and clearly didn’t think about it too much. I won’t overstay, and I will leave as soon as I can."
"No, you don’t have to be in such a hurry to leave. You can stay as long as you like."
"Thank you, my lady, but I don’t want to upset the Primus any more than I already have. Besides, I have already confirmed why I came all this way."
"Jael is trying to keep it under wraps as much as he can, so may I ask that you not make the rumors any worse than they already are."
Sabrina stiffened. "The Primus doesn’t want the lords to know?"
"I don’t think that’s it. It’s more like he doesn’t want to cause a ruckus. This is the first hybrid child between vampires and humans. He doesn’t think the lords would be very receptive to the idea."
"What’s there to be so closed off about? The Primus’ mate has taken in. That’s certainly a cause for celebration."
Mauve didn’t know if Sabrina was being truthful or sarcastic. The lords didn’t even accept her as Jael’s mate, even after he had clearly marked her. There was no way they would accept that a baby was coming. Mauve had tried her very best not to think about the political aspect of her pregnancy. She wanted to continue to believe that part was unimportant.
"We all know the lords won’t see it that way," she whispered. "They would think it’s just another way Jael is catering to humans—even going as far as to have a child with me. It would spell chaos. That’s why Jael was quite rude when he saw you, and I apologize for that."
"No, you have nothing to apologize for. It is my fault for showing up unannounced. I knew he wasn’t responding to the letters, and I guess I was secretly hoping you would at least stop him from throwing me out."
"There is no way he would have thrown you out. That would be too cruel."
"Yeah, it’s still very dangerous."
"Does that mean I can count on you?" Mauve asked softly as she stared at Sabrina’s face.
"Of course, but I’d have to ask that you at least let me tell my father. I know he may have caused some trouble, but there is no way I’d be able to keep it from him."
"Of course, you may do that. It’s not like you can lie about it. I just don’t want things to get worse than they already are."
Sabrina nodded. "I completely understand, and while I am here, I’ll do my best to help in whatever way I can. I may not have had a child of my own, but I practically took care of my sister. I was there for everything. Births are really rare in vampire regions."
"So I heard."
"Which is why I can’t comprehend why anyone would think this is a bad thing."
Mauve sometimes didn’t understand Sabrina. She didn’t know if the vampire was just that open-minded or pandering to her, but she leaned closer to the former. Sabrina was the only vampire who reached out to her without needing a reason to. It was completely different from Mill and Louis, both of whom had ties with Jael. Sabrina had none of that, and she has never treated Mauve any less or differently.
"I am sure you can think of a few reasons why," Mauve whispered before she could help it.
"Yeah," Sabrina said absentmindedly, and a strange expression passed across her face. "You’re going to have an even tougher time in the coming days. But!" she immediately added, "Now is certainly not the time to think about it. You’re going to become a mother. Argh, I am so envious. I wish I had my own mate too."
"Sabrina," Mauve called.
"Forgive me, my lady," she said with a snicker.
Mauve wasn’t unfamiliar with this side of Sabrina. She could clearly recall Sabrina’s reaction when she found out that Jael had marked Mauve. Not only was she happy, but she wasted no time in slandering Jevera that Mauve had almost started feeling bad for her. Sabrina didn’t stop until Jael came to take Mauve away.
"That’s not what I mean. I’m sure you’ll find your mate soon," Mauve replied.
"If you say it, I believe it."
"Is there anyone you have your eyes on?" Mauve asked. She didn’t know why she asked—it wasn’t that she wanted to pry into Sabrina’s life, but she was a little curious about who the vampire would end up with.
Sabrina gasped, her hands covering her mouth. "My lady is interested in gossip!"
"Lady Sabrina, would you not do that?" Mauve didn’t like the hotness she felt on her cheeks.
"You know I am only teasing, my lady," Sabrina grinned with a twinkle in her eyes.
