Chapter 713. Jael’s Promises

Chapter 713: 713. Jael’s Promises

"I was wondering," Mauve asked after some time of just lying on Jael in silence.

"What is it?" Jael asked as he slowly ran his fingers through her hair.

"What happened to the guard stationed in front of my room? Did you get rid of him so Seraphino would have easy access to me?" Mauve didn’t know why she suddenly needed to know, but it was something she had been curious about.

Jael winced at her accusation. "I wanted to see how far Seraphino would go, but I never intended to put you in such a dangerous position. And no, I didn’t get rid of the guard. He was stationed right outside your bedroom, but when I arrived, he wasn’t there. It wasn’t until almost dusk that he appeared."

Mauve jerked her head up at this. She couldn’t begin to fathom the excuse the guard would have for vanishing for that long, but it must have been genuine because he was back at his post by the time she left for the first meal. "What did he say happened?"

"He said he tried to stop Seraphino but suddenly woke up in a dark room. He had a feeling someone must have hit him from behind, and the only proof he had was the dried blood at the back of his head. The injury was already long healed."

"Oh," Mauve said and placed her head back on his chest.

"I should have foreseen this. It was just one guard; Seraphino would have easily overpowered him."

"It sounds like he had help. Did you sense anyone when you arrived?" Mauve asked.

Jael shook his head. Seraphino had more than enough people working for him, and as always, whenever he came to the castle, he never came alone. There were always more than enough guards needed to accompany one on a trip. Seraphino would have easily placed people at certain points.

"You don’t have to worry. I know you may not trust me, but I swear it won’t happen again. Not ever. I won’t play such a silly game again. I won’t keep anything from you, and I’ll protect you properly this time—the both of you," Jael promised.

Mauve took a deep breath. "I know," she whispered. "And who says I don’t trust you? I do. I’m the one who thinks you don’t trust that I can handle anything."

"That’s not true. You’re the strongest person I know. I could tell how scared you were, but you still went on to confront the Lords. I’ve never been so proud, and it made me hate myself even more. I have done nothing but put you in dangerous situations since you got here."

Mauve pushed herself upward and wrapped her arms around Jael’s neck. "I knew the Vampire Regions were dangerous when I came here, and I had more than enough chances to leave, yet here I am. Today is a good day. We made so much progress, that I can barely believe my eyes. Whatever comes our way, we’ll face it together. And with you by my side, I’m sure I can handle anything."

He kissed the side of her head, and Mauve smiled. She returned his kiss on the cheek, but Jael moved, kissing her on the lips. Her eyes widened as he crushed her lips with his, molding them to his wishes. By the time he pulled away, Mauve was out of breath.

"I know the offense I committed was grave, but could you find some other way to penalize me? I don’t like being away from you. I hurt more than I can explain, and it hurt even more because I know I deserve it." The more he spoke, the tighter his arms went around her.

"Just don’t do anything that I don’t like," she mumbled.

"I wouldn’t dare. I’m glad you’re alright. I was so scared I wouldn’t make it in time, and it made me question my decision." Jael sighed and shook his head. "You should eat," he mumbled, changing the subject. "I noticed you’ve been picking at your meals."

Mauve shrugged. There was no way she would have been able to eat in that state. She would be lying if she said she was over what happened. Even lying with Jael like this wasn’t enough to comfort her, but she couldn’t let the fear consume her. More importantly, a ruling had been passed in her favor. She had Lady Marceline and Louis to thank for that.

"Is there anything in particular you’d like? I will personally ask Herbert to get it ready for you."

Mauve shook her head. "As long as it doesn’t have pork, I should be fine."

"Alright then. I’ll get to order."

Mauve rolled to the side so Jael could get out of bed. She faced away from him as her mind churned. She couldn’t help but think the coming days would be more challenging. She rubbed her stomach as she tried to figure out what sort of commotion would arise from the Lords’ discovery that not only had the Primus marked her, but she was also carrying his child.

A thought crossed her mind, and Mauve decided on it. It wasn’t just for her own good, but the baby’s too. She didn’t know much, and it would be nice to have someone on her side. She thought about talking to Jael about it, but she could tell he wouldn’t be very pleased with the idea. She decided to put it off until it was closer to the time.

By the time the last meal arrived, Mauve was so sleepy Jael had to help her eat, something that he was a little too glad to do. By the time she was done with the meal, Mauve was practically falling asleep. He helped her clean up and got her ready for bed.

Mauve had a strange dream when she slept. It was unclear whether it was a good dream or not, but she did feel a sense of good anxiety, which didn’t make much sense to her when she awoke in the middle of the day.

"Are you okay?" Jael asked immediately.

Mauve smiled to herself. This fact about Jael was indeed very comforting. "Yeah, just had a weird dream," she replied as she scooted closer to him.

"What about?" he asked, concerned.

"Can’t remember," she said dismissively and yawned. Mauve was asleep before she even heard his reply.
