Chapter 699. Nausea

Chapter 699: 699. Nausea

"I am not sick," Mauve cried as Mill held her head over a bucket.

"Are you sure?" Mill asked. "You’ve thrown up twice now."

"I do feel nauseated, but I know I am not sick. I have been feeling this way for two days now. It usually gets worse around dinner time, but this is the first time I have ever thrown up."

"Two days?" Jael asked in horror. Mauve’s eyes flew to him. She had completely forgotten he was in the room with them. "Why didn’t you say anything?"

"Because there is nothing to say. I think it’s a symptom of, you know," she mumbled.

"Know what?" Jael asked darkly.

Mauve sighed in exasperation as she realized she would have to spell it out. "The pregnancy," she whispered, suddenly feeling very bashful.

"Oh," Jael and Mill said simultaneously.

"Is there anything we can do?" they asked.

Mauve shook her head. "It will wear off after a while."

Mauve was only guessing, but she did know that nausea came with pregnancy. She had seen some of the maids throwing up and heard rumors going around that they were pregnant. However, she would rather assume than have to take more herbs.

"Can you eat anything? It is almost time for the last meal," Mill added.

"I don’t know," Mauve replied genuinely. With the way she felt, she was worried whatever she ate right now would come out the same way it went in, and that was something she never wanted to do in front of the Lords.

"You can hold our dinner for another hour or more, whatever Mauve might need to be able to eat again. I will stay with her—"

"No, you won’t!" Mauve suddenly blurted.

Jael slowly turned to her. "No?" He asked puzzled, "What do you mean no?"

"You can’t do that," she cried. "You already spent half the night with me. You have guests; you can’t leave them unattended."

"I am not their babysitter. There is nothing for you to worry about. I am sure they can enjoy a meal without my presence."

"Mill will be here with me. Besides, I won’t eat until the last meal is over anyway, so you can come back and join me."

"I won’t do that," Jael said.

"Please," Mauve begged. "You can leave as early as possible, but it won’t be proper if you don’t join them."

She didn’t want to imagine what the Lords would think if they discovered she was the reason Jael didn’t show up to the last meal. Seraphino had already given them something to be agitated about; they would have more reason to be against Jael.

Jael sighed. "You are that adamant about me leavi—"

"Yes," she cut in before he completed the sentence. "I will be fine. I will just stay in bed and wait for you. I won’t move a muscle, and the last meal will be over in a second."

Jael narrowed his eyes, and Mauve feared he might refuse, but he suddenly let out a loud sound and said, "Very well, have it your way."

"Yes," she screamed, a little too excited, which caused her to almost throw up again.

"My lady!" Mill screamed, rushing forward with the bucket.

"False alarm," she chuckled. She turned to look at Jael, and he was staring at her with a sad expression. She frowned, but it was gone as quickly as it had appeared, almost as though she had imagined it.

Jael left not long after, leaving her alone with Mill. The maid wiped her clean and covered her with the blankets as she lay in bed. "Would there be anything you need?" Mill asked.

"Some juice," she replied immediately. She felt dehydrated.

"I will bring it to you right away. Anything else?" Mill asked.

Mauve shook her head. Mill curtsied, and with that, she was gone. Mauve looked up at the ceiling as she lay in bed. Her stomach was starting to feel better—not better, but at least she didn’t feel like she would throw up again.

After a while, she sat up. It was a little uncomfortable to keep lying down, and that was when she realized that Mill was taking a little too long. She didn’t get a chance to think about it before she heard a knock.

She didn’t say anything, and the person didn’t come in. Mauve knew immediately that it wasn’t Mill. When they knocked again, she said, "Come in."

A different servant walked in with her head bent. She curtsied to Mauve when she was close enough and placed her juice on the nearest table. She immediately turned to leave, but Mauve stopped her.

"Where is Mill?"

"Oh, I am so sorry, my lady. Miss Mill is very busy. One of the maids fell while cleaning the highest room, and I think she broke a leg. Miss Mill is helping with the situation."

Mauve gasped and brought her hands to her face. "Oh no. I hope she is all right."

The maid simply nodded and bowed her head before retreating. Mauve poured herself a drink while looking around, she didn’t mind being left alone.

The next time she heard a knock, which was only moments later, Mauve wasted no time in telling them to come in. However, they didn’t open the door immediately, and she wondered if they didn’t hear her. "I said you can come in," Mauve repeated.

"Well, if you insist, my lady. I hear that’s what they call you now."

How she didn’t scream was what Mauve was asking herself. But then she realized that wasn’t the only problem. She couldn’t move; it was as if she was rooted to the bed.

She wanted to run, but all she could do was sit frozen as he walked closer into the room. He smiled, his face as creepy as ever. He didn’t stop walking, not until he got to the side of the bed.

Slowly, he grabbed her neck, locking her in his grip that was slowly tightening. "You can imagine my horror for the past couple of weeks, but maybe it’s a good thing. If it had gone the way I wanted, I wouldn’t have gotten a chance like this."
