Chapter 698. Dinning Disruption

Chapter 698: 698. Dinning Disruption

"Sire, I apologize for the late arrival." He didn’t look very sorry as he said this; rather, there was a smile on his lips.

"Have a seat," Jael said curtly.

"Right away," he replied, but made sure to slowly walk to the nearest table.

Mauve was grateful their table was filled. Lots of Lords had already arrived by this point. The only ones missing were Lord Drusile and Lord Phelan. As for the latter, there was no doubt he would make an appearance—after all, his son was already here.

The servants were quick to serve Lord Seraphino, even as the air grew tense and whispers filtered through the hall.

"I didn’t think the Primus would invite him," a voice carried to Mauve’s ear.

"I didn’t either. However, this concerns the whole of the vampires, everyone knows how important Seraphino is and..."

Mauve drowned out the rest of the conversation. Jael had already warned her about his appearance, and she had prepared herself for days; this wouldn’t break her. She raised her head to see both Louis and Jael observing her. Mauve gave them both a reassuring smile and resumed her meal.

"Ah," Seraphino spoke loudly, "the journey here was terrible. We encountered no less than two Palers only feet from each other. It was only by sheer miracle we got here in one piece."

Every conversation stopped, and they all turned to Seraphino. Mauve had her back to him, so she couldn’t see his face; all she could hear was his voice.

"Perhaps if the Primus had spent more time trying to figure out how to deal with the Palers as he said he would instead of—well," he paused with a laugh, "I doubt it would be appropriate to say that during a meal. Perhaps if he had done what was right, we would have found a way to kill them by now."

Mauve’s eyes widened, and a piece of cutlery dropped, but even that wasn’t enough to undo what had been done. She turned to Jael, but he didn’t even blink, didn’t lift his head—his gaze was locked on his meal.

"Are you sure you fought off two Palers?" Louis asked. "You’re too chatty for someone who claims to have barely escaped with his life. We both know how strong Palers are. You’d best spin tales that are actually believable. Besides, Palers didn’t just show up; they’ve been around for as long as you’ve existed. If it was that easy, why aren’t you bringing your great idea, Seraphino?"

"Lord Louis," Seraphino smirked, "I am so used to your absence, I didn’t even notice you at the table. You can imagine my shock when a stranger spoke." Seraphino laughed like he had just said the funniest thing. "Perhaps a miracle is an exaggeration, but a mere two Palers certainly wouldn’t cause me much trouble."

"Really? Then why cause a ruckus? I know you like attention as you barely get any in your abandoned estate, but I suggest you keep your fabrications to yourself."

"Fabrications?!" Seraphino’s voice echoed in the silent hall. "I have merely stated what has clearly been on everyone’s mind. Just because the rest of you are too chi—"

"Silence!" Jael said. He didn’t speak louder than Seraphino, but his tone was certainly colder. He resumed his meal as though he hadn’t said anything. However, Seraphino did not speak another word until the meal was over.

As soon as it was over, Mauve wasted no time fleeing with Jael. She clung to him as they walked out, with Louis behind them. Mauve made sure to keep her gaze straight; she didn’t want to catch the eye of any Lord.

"What do you intend to do?" Jael asked as they walked towards the stairs.

"Well, I am only halfway done with the pair of socks," she mumbled. "I was thinking I could complete that." She wanted to add the part where she would spend the remainder of the night with Sabrina but decided against it. Sabrina most likely had her hands full with her father, especially after what transpired.

"Alright, I will stay with you. I can help if you want."

A loud snicker caused Jael to jerk his head backward.

"Sorry," Louis snickered some more, "something got into my throat."

It was pretty clear he was lying, but before Jael could say anything else about the matter, Mauve drew his attention once more.

They reached her room, and Jael sent her inside first. "I’ll be right there."

Mauve met Louis’ eyes. She could tell they wanted to discuss something they didn’t want her to hear. She nodded and walked into her room, closing the door behind her.

"He is not stupid; he won’t dare," Louis said before Jael even said anything. Understanding immediately what the matter was about.

"Yeah, right! He would. He got away with a warning this time and still thinks he would get away with it. My mate or not, Mauve is still human." Jael ground his teeth and clenched his fists, wanting to punch something.

Louis understood what he meant. Mauve was still seen as less in the eyes of the Lords. Even the announcement wouldn’t change that. However, it was certainly a start.

"Yes," Louis replied, "but she is your marked mate. Everyone knows what that means, and regardless of whether or not she is human, it would be stupid to go against the Primus’ marked mate."

"I suppose you’re right, but I am not about to take any chances with that vermin—not after the stunt he pulled. Speak to Damon, Danag, and Erick. You know what to do. I will spend the entire time with Mauve."

"After tomorrow night, there will be nothing to worry about. It’s the last meeting with the Lords. Whoever is against your union may leave the castle."

"Hmm, we will see."

Louis started to go but stopped. "Oh, yeah, we more thing."

"What is it?"

"You’re not going to like it, but I can guarantee that it’s a foolproof plan."

"No!" Jael said immediately and placed his hand on the door handle.

When Jael returned, Mauve was done with her sock. "Look at it," she waved the tiny sock in front of Jael.

Jael squinted as if it was too small to see. "Isn’t that too small?" he asked with a frown.

"Of course not. How big do you think a child is?"

"I don’t know, but I know my two fingers will barely fit in there."

Mauve chuckled. "Yeah, they won’t fit."

She placed it on his open palm, and Jael just stared at it. He knew she was trying to prepare clothes for the baby. He didn’t want her to stress herself—he could take care of it easily—but Mauve wanted to do this, and he had no plans to stop her.

"It’s so little," he commented.

Mauve laughed and pulled him down so he could join her on the bed. "Saying how little it is won’t make it bigger."

"And you’re sure it would fit?" he asked.

Mauve nodded. "But since you’re so pessimistic, I’ll make some in a bigger size. How about that?"

"Make one in my size," he said and raised his eyes to look at her.

"What do you need socks for?" she laughed and took it from him.

"I could wear them on my cock. Why should why I need them be important?"

Mauve turned scarlet. "Jael," she covered her face, "why would you even say something like that? Besides, I doubt I can make a sock that fits."

"You fit," Jael smirked.

"Ahhh," she yelled. "Go away. You’re distracting me."

She picked up the yarn and tried to get to work, but all she could think about were Jael’s words. Her hands shook slightly, and her face was a very ripe shade of tomato.

Jael laughed at her embarrassment. "Don’t worry, I won’t do anything."

"I wasn’t thinking that. Are you going to help or not?" she asked, keeping her face down because she couldn’t meet his eyes—he would be able to tell what she was thinking about.

"So, would you make socks for me?" he asked.

"No, absolutely not. Not after what you told me you’re going to do with it."

Jael laughed and pinched her cheeks. She smacked his hands away and tried to glare at him, but it just made him laugh even harder. Mauve couldn’t help smiling with him.

At some point, she got exhausted and dozed off. When she woke up, she was lying on Jael while he lay on his back. Mauve was horrified, and she tried to move away, but Jael stopped her.

"Where do you think you’re going?"

"Was I asleep like this, the whole time?" She asked.

"I am not complaining, if you’d like to sleep some more go ahead."

"Wait, you stayed with me?" She asked in further horror.

"Yes, don’t you have Lords to attend to?" She asked.

"They can wait. Besides, I have entertained their requests for far too long that I barely spend any time with you."

Mauve opened her mouth to protest but her stomach twisted and she was hit by a sudden wave of nausea. Mauve was scrambling out of the bed, praying she would make it to the floor before she threw up all over Jael.
