Chapter 688: 688. A Done Deal
Mauve shuffled in her seat as she sat for the second meal. The tension was palpable, and the air almost seemed to crackle. Most people appeared unbothered, but Mauve was on high alert as the servants served her meal. It was the second meal of the day, and the Levatons and Garths were seated together.
Lady Francine and Lady Marceline were both conveniently absent, and Mauve wondered if the conversation with Jael had anything to do with it, as no excuse was offered this time.
Mauve barely got any stares from Jevera or her father as she sat down, but the Garths wouldn’t stop looking at her. From Sabrina’s little sister, Helena, to their mother, Arora, and their father, Lord Garth. Lord Garth’s eyes held intense disapproval as he gazed at Mauve.
The only time he looked away from her was when Jael started speaking, asking about their journey and whether they had encountered any difficulties. Lord Garth was slow to reply, but when he eventually spoke, there was no trace of the malice he had directed at Mauve.
"It wasn’t the smoothest," he said with a thin smile that didn’t reach his eyes, "but thankfully, we didn’t run into any Palers and got here without a hitch."
"That’s wonderful," Jael said. He looked like he wanted to speak more on the matter but decided against it.
Aside from the glares, the second meal was bearable, and by the time Mauve was done with her meal, she was exhausted and wanted to flee the dining hall. How was she supposed to exude any sort of confidence when she had vampires glaring at her in this manner?
At least the Garths were decent enough not to say anything, even though it was pretty clear what they thought. She could only imagine that when they spoke to Jael privately, they would likely let all hell loose. Mauve was grateful she wouldn’t be there to witness it.
Sabrina met her eyes and smiled, then mischievously turned to look at Jevera. It took the red-haired vampire a few seconds to notice, but when she did, her gaze darkened, and she shot both of them glares.
Mauve quickly turned away. She wasn’t a part of this. However, it was pretty clear Sabrina intended to torment Jevera about this, and Mauve feared this was likely to affect her more than do any good. She truly wanted no part in it.
She turned to look at Jael, hoping he would notice she was done with her meal so he could finish up and take her out of there. He raised a brow as their eyes met and opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, only to be interrupted by Lord Garth.
"Sire," the older vampire said, "a word after your meal if it pleases you."
Jael’s jaw hardened. Even though it was expected, it wasn’t any less annoying. "Of course," he said with a curt smile. "I’ll meet you in the drawing room. Ask the servant to lead you there." Without waiting for a reply, he turned his attention to Mauve. "Are you ready to leave?" he asked.
Mauve didn’t waste any time. She nodded, and Jael gave her his hand. She took it a little too quickly, as she could literally feel the air growing hostile. If it was bad before, it was just about to get worse.
The door had barely closed behind them when she heard Lord Garth’s voice. She couldn’t clearly hear what he was saying, but she could tell he wasn’t pleased.
"Are you going to sit and just accept it as it is?" Lord Garth asked Lord Levaton.
"Anger won’t solve anything," Levaton said. "Besides, aren’t you speaking to the wrong person? If you have an issue with it, take it up with the Primus."
"That is exactly what I intend to do, but I can’t believe you would sit here and do nothing."
Lord Levaton immediately looked like he couldn’t take it anymore. "And what exactly would I do? Care to enlighten me, Lord Garth? What is there to do?"
"We won’t have a human as the Primus’ mate!" Lord Garth stated darkly.
"We both know it’s too late to disagree now. He already marked her. Flare up all you want, speak to the Primus all you want—it won’t change the outcome."
"I should have known the Levatons were nothing but spineless. No wonder a mere human took the Primus from your daughter."
"Father," Sabrina interjected.
"Tch!" Lord Garth said and stood up.
"Dear," his wife called, trying to grab his arm, but he pulled away from her grip and made his way to the door, with Lady Arora following after him.
Sabrina didn’t think she had ever seen her father this angry. She knew he didn’t approve, as she had been there when he received the letter. However, she would have never guessed his disdain ran this deep.
"I apologize on my father’s behalf," Sabrina said, pulling out of her seat to curtsey to Lord Levaton. "The journey here was quite strenuous, and coupled with the news, Father is having a very rough time, and I hope you’ll understand."
"You don’t have to apologize, Sabrina," Lord Levaton replied. "I understand, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact that his anger is misplaced."
"Thank you, Lord Levaton." She turned to Jevera, but Jevera didn’t look her way. Without another word, Sabrina left the dining hall, with her sister beside her.
"Is the Primus really mated to a human now?" Helena asked.
"Yes," Sabrina replied.
It was a little surprising that this was the first comment Helena had made about the matter since they arrived at the castle, but even someone as dense as she was would know better than to speak ill of the Primus’ mate in his presence.
"Are Father and Mother going to talk the Primus out of it?" Helena asked.
Sabrina wanted to tell her sister it was a waste of time. She had seen the look on Lord Levaton’s face—it wasn’t for lack of trying. However, it was pretty clear it would be a waste of breath. He didn’t just pick her; he marked her. There was no undoing it. Her parents were trying to pluck fruit from a chopped tree. It was a done deal.
