Chapter 674: 674. Anticipation

The corners of Jael’s eyes crinkled as he stared at Mauve, unable to suppress the smile spreading across his lips at her excitement. Her joy made him momentarily forget the dangers that came with this.

"Are you laughing at me?" she asked, pausing her rambling when all he did was smile and nod at her words.

"No," he shook his head and pulled her to him, resting her head on his chest. "I’m just happy you’re excited." He truly was, he was going to be a father. He hasn’t had the time to just dwell on the good aspect of this.

"I’m still not very pleased with you," she mumbled against his chest.

"I know, and I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to keep it from you," he said softly.

Mauve pouted. She should probably be angrier, but she was too happy to dwell on anything bad right now. Besides, it was hard to stay mad when he gave such a sincere apology.

She wrapped her arms around his neck. "I can’t believe I’m going to have your baby, and at the same time, I’m your mate. It feels so surreal," she murmured into his neck.

There were so many important things happening at once. It almost felt like something bad might happen. Mauve quickly pushed those thoughts away, deciding to focus on the good.

"It is real, alright. Very real." Jael kissed the side of her face. Mauve was taking this far more calmly than he had expected, and it was rubbing off on him. He couldn’t help but wonder what their child would look like—more like him or more like Mauve?

"You should get some sleep," he said, knowing he’d have to keep an eye on her and make sure she didn’t do anything strenuous.

"I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep, I am too excited," she said, grinning. She lifted her head from his chest to look at him. The dim light made her squint as she tried to focus on his face.

Jael chuckled. "You should," he said, moving her so she sat beside him. "You need to be even more careful now. No unnecessary moving around, and certainly no spending too much time with Louis."

"Wait, what? First off," she said, turning her upper frame to face him, finger pointed. "What’s wrong with Louis? I don’t spend that much time with him."

Jael shifted uneasily. He worried Louis might plant ideas in Mauve’s head, and the last thing he wanted was for her to be more agitated than she already was. But he wasn’t sure how to enforce this without alarming her.

"Just don’t spend too much time with him. I’ll keep you company instead."

Mauve giggled. "You’re busy, Jael. You don’t have to worry about a thing. And it’s too early to restrict my movements. I think it’s perfectly normal to move around even more now—well, until my stomach grows..."

Mauve glanced down at her stomach, and Jael followed her gaze. Soon, her belly would be too big to fit into her dresses. She would need bigger clothes, and the baby would need clothes too. She should probably start knitting. Why hadn’t she taken more lessons from Yasmin?

"What?" Jael asked, lifting her chin to meet his gaze. "You suddenly went quiet, and you look troubled."

"The baby will need clothes," she said, looking at him with wide eyes. "I haven’t spun yarn in so long. I only know how to make a scarf! I’ll need to make clothes, I need to—"

Jael grabbed her shoulders and shook her gently. "Relax," he said, amusement in his voice. "Take a deep breath." Mauve did as he asked. "Good," he praised. "It’s too early to worry about that. Right now, I just need you to be cautious. If you feel anything is wrong, tell me immediately. As for the clothes, that should be the least of your concerns—I’ll take care of it, okay?"

"I know you can," she said. "That’s not what I’m worried about. I’d like to make some myself, but I don’t know how, and I think it’ll take me forever to figure it out. Next thing I know, the baby will be here, and I won’t be ready."

"Mauve," he called, but she kept rambling. To stop her and ease her worries, Jael kissed her. Her eyes widened, but she quickly melted into his arms, kissing him back.

What started as a simple kiss deepened, and Jael found he couldn’t pull away. His hand moved tenderly over her body, and Mauve grabbed the back of his head, pulling him closer. He groaned into her mouth, his fingers tracing her skin through the silk of her nightdress.

His hand moved to her chest, brushing a thumb over her nipple, which hardened under his touch. Mauve moaned and pressed against him, climbing onto his lap.

Jael’s desire flared instantly, his arousal straining against his pants. Mauve straddled him, pressing herself against him, she

rotated her hips, and Jael nearly lost control.

He broke the kiss, looking her in the eye. "You should go to sleep," he said, his voice strained.

Her face was flushed, her eyes dark with desire. Her chest rose and fell, and Jael did his best to ignore the way her hardened nipples showed through the thin fabric of her nightdress.

He knew he should have more self-control. Mauve needed rest, and he needed to be responsible. But as she ground her hips against him, he groaned in frustration.

"Mauve," he called in horror, realizing just how far he was letting this go.

She leaned in closer. "Jael," she whispered.

Was she trying to seduce him? He wasn’t sure he could resist. When their lips met again, Jael didn’t hold back this time. He kissed her hungrily, and she returned it with equal urgency.

In one swift motion, he tossed her onto the bed. His hands roamed over her body as she responded to his touch, calling his name as he buried himself in her warmth.
