Chapter 673: 673. Breaking the News
Mauve watched Jael pace nervously as she lay in bed, ready to go to sleep. She had never seen him like this, so to say she was worried was an understatement. "Jael," she called softly.
He paused, then turned slowly to look at her. He walked toward the bed and stopped in front of her. He didn’t say anything, just stared down at her. Mauve shifted under his stare, her heart tightening as she tried to figure out what was wrong.
She tucked her hair behind her ear. "What’s wrong? Is this about the letter Danag gave to you?"
Jael’s eyes narrowed. "I couldn’t care less about that," he replied.
"Then what’s the matter? I can’t help but be scared," she said, grabbing his arm to pull him down. He gave in and fell onto the bed.
Jael adjusted so Mauve could lie on him. "The reason for my unrest is a totally different matter."
"Would you like to share?" she asked, looking up at him.
Jael looked down, and their eyes met. "It’s not that I don’t want to share, it’s more like..." He paused to take a deep breath. "I don’t know how." He covered his nose by placing his palms on both sides.
"Oh," she said, pulling his hands away from his nose. "Tell it however you want to. I’ll understand."
"What would I ever do without you?" he asked, and Mauve giggled.
"Be serious, Jael. You sound really bothered by this, and now you’re deflecting. I am worried."
"You shouldn’t be," he said, his tone turning serious. Mauve instantly felt cold. "I think..." he cleared his throat.
Mauve swallowed as she waited for him to continue speaking, holding onto Jael as she waited. She didn’t know why she felt anxious, but she did.
"I think," he tried again. "I think you’re pregnant."
Mauve blinked, then blinked again. She slowly raised her head from Jael’s legs and sat upright. She didn’t know how she felt; she didn’t even believe her ears. "What did you say?" she asked again, her voice shaking as she realized she was on the verge of tears.
"I said, I think you’re pregnant. No, I am sure you are." Mauve didn’t react; she just stared blankly at a point on the bed. "Mauve," Jael called gently, but she didn’t respond. "Mauve," he tried again, and then he smelled it—tears. Jael didn’t hesitate to pull her into his arms.
She sat across his legs as he wrapped his arms around her. "Don’t cry," Jael said.
"I can’t help it," she said, wiping her face. "I don’t even know why I am crying."
He pulled her head closer so she could rest it on his shoulder, and Mauve sobbed. After a few moments of sobbing, she pulled her face away. "I am fine now," she said, wiping her face, but the more she wiped, the more tears flowed.
"Mauve," Jael called, trying to help her wipe her tears. "You have to stop crying. It makes me want to punch someone, and since I am the one that made you cry, I’d have to punch myself."
She laughed through the tears. "That’s correct. You do deserve a punch." She wiped her tears as she spoke, and this time there seemed to be less pouring down.
"You can say that again."
"Are you sure about me being pregnant?" she asked with a serious tone. A hand instinctively went to her stomach, Mauve not even realizing she was doing this.
"Yes," he replied, staring hard at her face.
Mauve beamed at him with red eyes and a puffy nose. She smiled so hard, Jael was sure it must hurt. He bent his head and kissed her on the mouth.
"Don’t do that, I have snot everywhere," she said, pulling away from him.
"I couldn’t help it," he replied.
"I still can’t believe I am pregnant," she said. "Louis told me it was impossible."
At the mention of Louis, Jael felt his mood sour. He didn’t only plan to tell Mauve about the pregnancy but also about the dangers that would come with expecting a vampire’s child. As much as he hated being the one to tell her such bad news after she had just found out she was expecting, he knew he had to.
"He told me the same thing," Jael explained.
Mauve jerked her head. "He knows I am pregnant? Wait a minute, how long have you known?"
Jael didn’t like the way she stared at him so intently. "A while," he mumbled, turning his gaze away.
Mauve’s eyes narrowed. "How long is a while exactly?"
Jael sighed. "Since when I had to spend the entire night with you."
Mauve blushed at the recollection, but her embarrassment immediately turned to anger. "And you kept it from me until now?" she asked in horror.
It had been days since the incident. She couldn’t believe he had withheld such important information. She wanted to smack him, but at the same time, she was too happy to be angry.
"I didn’t keep it from you because I wanted to leave you in the dark. I was worried," he said.
"About what?" she asked with a frown.
Jael ran his hand through his hair. "I don’t think you will have an easy pregnancy—"
"I don’t think there is such a thing as an easy pregnancy. I have run into a few pregnant women while living in Greenham, and it didn’t look very easy," she smiled at him.
"That’s different," he explained. "You’re not expecting a human child; it’s a vampire child."
"And a human child; it’s a mix of both," she grinned at him.
"Yes, but this has never happened before, and I don’t want to lose you." His arms around her tightened, and for a second, Mauve’s stomach knotted.
"Lose me?" she asked. "What are you talking about? This is the most natural thing in the world," she beamed. "It might be a little tough, and I don’t know much about pregnancy, but I’ll make sure to find out all that I can. Also, Jean’s wife is pregnant. I am sure I could learn a few things from her. Oh no, I should have asked questions before he left. Oh, there is so much I need to do and learn," she rambled.
