Chapter 665: 665. Spectacle

"You wouldn’t suddenly start calling me that without any reason," Mauve peeked at Mill, but the young woman didn’t look like she would spill anything. Mill just smiled stiffly at her and sat in the corner of the room, watching.

Mauve groaned as she lay on the bed, rolling onto her side. She wanted to go but couldn’t leave. She could still clearly remember Jael’s reaction to her showing up unannounced and the guards’ reaction when they saw her. Was she missing something?

She didn’t feel any different, and she was a bit concerned that she had slept that long. What bothered her the most was what had transpired before she fell asleep. Mauve palmed her face. She had barely had a chance to ask Jael about it, but he didn’t seem to think it was a problem, which was in itself concerning.

She lay in silence as her mind spun, not initiating any conversation with Mill. The vampire must have figured out she wanted to be left alone, as Mill didn’t try to speak to her either. She would occasionally glance in her direction with a smile.

Jael didn’t show up until it was time for the second meal. He walked to where she laid on the bed and she gave him the cold shoulder but still followed him to the dining hall.

He kept looking at her as they made their way to the dining hall, and unable to take it anymore, Mauve yelled out, "What?"

"Nothing," he said, looking away from her.

"Don’t say that when you’ve been staring at me so weirdly."

"You seem angry," Jael said, keeping his gaze straight ahead. "I wanted to make sure nothing was wrong."

"I am not angry," she responded, turning away from him.

At the bottom of the stairs, Jael led her in the direction of the dining hall. As they got closer, Mauve noticed some confusion and commotion among the guards standing in front of the dining hall. They looked stern, stared at her, and then at each other. They recovered quickly, and she wondered if the frown Jael shot them helped them get their act together faster. They bowed, and it almost felt as though they were bowing to her too.

She frowned and simply chalked it up to her seeing things. She ignored it and walked through the open doors. Jael held her hand, and even though it was cold, it felt a little comforting.

It had been a while since she had eaten there, though it didn’t feel like that to her. She assumed the Lords felt it had been a while. She wasn’t completely worried about them, as most of them never really spoke to her or anything.

The dining room was lit just enough to provide light for the table, but the rest of the room remained dark. Jael squeezed her hand as they walked closer, and she saw the Lords rise to their feet.

Mauve saw it because she was looking straight ahead, but almost simultaneously, all the Lords’ faces changed. It was hard to determine what exactly they were thinking. The only vampires that didn’t have surprised looks on their faces were Louis and Jael’s personal guards. The rest looked as if they had seen a ghost.

Jael led her to her seat and pulled it out for her, acting completely oblivious to what she had just witnessed. She gave him a questioning look, but he avoided her gaze. He sat down, and the rest of the Lords did too.

Mauve frowned as she looked at the servants. Even though they were seated, no one was making any moves to start serving. It wasn’t until Jael turned his eyes in their direction that they snapped out of it and started moving.

Mauve leaned back as she prepared to wait. She was used to being served last. It had never really bothered her, and the servants moved fast enough that she never really noticed it. However, it was certainly noticeable that they served her right after they served Jael.

Mauve could barely hold her surprise in, and she turned to Jael, but his gaze wasn’t on her. She looked around but had to quickly lower her gaze. All the other Lords were staring at her and didn’t even try to hide it.

Mauve shuffled in her chair and picked up her cutlery. She would just concentrate on eating. Unfortunately, that was pretty hard to do when she felt like a spectacle. Even on her first days in the castle, she didn’t get stares like this. They even avoided her. If she wasn’t sure something was going on, she was sure now.

She tried to get Jael’s attention, but once again, he didn’t look in her direction. Mauve could barely eat half her meal, but she wasn’t bothered about this. She had eaten her first meal just a few moments ago. Besides, when the Lords wouldn’t stop throwing stares her way, it was hard to eat.

"Is something wrong?" Jael asked her when he noticed she wasn’t eating anymore.

Mauve narrowed her eyes at him. He had some nerve to ask her something like that when it was obvious something was off. "I am full," she said stiffly.

His forehead creased, but he simply nodded to her words. "Give me a moment, I should be done soon enough."

Mauve grunted and turned her gaze away from him, locking eyes with Erick. What she saw in his eyes was pretty dark. She jerked a little, and he looked away. Mauve kept her gaze on the table until Jael was finished with his meal.

"Shall we?" He stood up and offered his hand to her.

Mauve didn’t take it. She just stood to her feet and walked past him. She didn’t care that she was doing this in front of the Lords; she was pretty fed up. She walked in front of him, and he easily kept up with her. Though it was pretty clear she wanted to walk alone, he took her hand regardless.

Mauve tried to pull her hand away from his grasp, but he didn’t let her and strutted out of the dining hall, still holding her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t make more of a scene than she already had, so she just let him.

They walked past the guards in front of the dining hall and were greeted with a bow. Mauve didn’t even slow down; she sped her way to the stairs and walked up. She slowed down when she got to her room and was about to go in when Jael pulled her past it.

She shot him a look. "What are you doing?"

"My room," he said without further explanation.

She narrowed her eyes at him before looking away and letting him pull her in the direction he wanted. They walked into the room, and he shut the door behind them, pinning her between the door and his hard body.

Mauve glared at him. "What are you doing?" she asked and tried to push him off.

"May I ask why you’re angry?" he asked, unmoving.

"Is there something on my face, Jael?" she asked with a raised brow.

He frowned and peered at her face. "What do you mean? I don’t see anything."

"Exactly what I thought. Then why was everyone giving me such weird stares? And don’t say I was imagining things."

"I wasn’t going to say that. Is that why you’re angry?"

"I am not angry because they were staring at me weirdly. I am angry because if I ask you about it, you would tell me it is nothing to worry about."

He smiled lightly, but it didn’t reach his eyes. He held her gaze for a moment. "I am not going to say that. I didn’t want to tell you immediately because I doubt it is something you would understand."

Mauve frowned. Jael seemed serious, and she felt her body tense as her thoughts began to spin ideas about what the issue was. "What won’t I understand?" she asked.

Mauve could feel her heartbeat slowly pick up, and she hoped whatever he was about to say wouldn’t break her. This time around, she might sleep and keep sleeping.

"This," he said as he touched the fang marks on her neck.

Mauve shivered at his cold touch but didn’t pull away. She turned to look at it, but there was no way she would be able to see it. She knew the exact spot he was pointing at. "What about it?" she asked when he didn’t say anything more.

"It isn’t just any bite mark," he said, tracing a finger around it.

"It isn’t?" Mauve asked, wondering why she was suddenly breathless.

"It isn’t," his eyes locked with hers. A light glow flickered off his blue pupils.

"What is it?" she asked. The suspense was killing her.

"It’s a mark that you’re my mate."

Mauve blinked as she tried to process his words. "Your mate?" she asked. "Like the one the Lords want you to get?"
