The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 663. Guilt
Chapter 663: 663. Guilt
Jael was sitting in the study once more with Louis across from him, and as usual, Louis was glaring down at Jael. "What’s so important that you had to drag me out here?" Jael asked, leaning back against his seat as he also eyeballed Louis.
"You can’t really be planning on telling her," Louis said.
"Tell her what?" Jael asked.
Louis glared at him. "We’ve gone too far for you to pretend you have no idea what I’m talking about. I’m trying to help here. Don’t make this any more difficult than it already is."
"I still don’t know what exactly you’re talking about. There are a lot of things to tell her."
"About the pregnancy."
"You said it’s possible she isn’t pregnant. Actually, your wording was that it’s impossible for her to be pregnant."
"But you believe she is," Louis said.
"I have my reasons," Jael responded.
"And you intend to tell her."
"I didn’t say that."
"I’m not an idiot, Jael. You look like you can’t wait to announce the news to her," Louis barked.
"I’m not going to keep it from her. This is something she deserves to know as soon as possible."
Louis took a deep breath. "I understand what you mean, and at the same time, I don’t think you understand the situation."
"I understand, but I’m not going to assume the worst simply because you said it. We’ve been through a lot. If it was truly impossible, she wouldn’t have taken in, in the first place."
"So you’re fine with losing Mauve?" Louis asked.
Jael was up before he could stop himself, instinctively reaching for Louis’s neck, but Louis realized what was happening and moved out of the way, putting enough space between them.
"What the hell! This is why I can’t have a proper conversation with you. I’m on your side, for fuck’s sake. Do you think I enjoy being the voice of reason? Do you think I want any harm to come to Mauve? Think about this logically for a second."
Jael blinked, and his eyes lost their glow. "I’m not fine with losing Mauve."
"Then the baby has to go," Louis said. Jael moved out from behind the desk and rushed after Louis, who moved from the corner. "Wait, wait! Hell! Wait! I’m not trying to get killed," he yelled as he tried to get away from Jael’s angry advance.
"The baby is not going anywhere," Jael said, standing in the spot Louis had just been, while Louis was now behind his desk.
Louis held his neck, eyeing Jael. "I knew you would say that. However, it would be easier to convince you than Mauve. If she were to ever find out, you would have lost the chance to get rid of it."
"Don’t speak so lightly of my child," Jael spat out but didn’t go after Louis again. His thoughts had once strayed in this direction before. As much as he wanted them to have a child together, he wasn’t so eager to put Mauve’s life on the line, even if it was just hearsay from Louis.
"You have thought of it, haven’t you?" Louis sighed. "This doesn’t bring me joy to tell you."
"There is no way to do that," Jael said adamantly.
"Don’t be so sure. It would shock you how far medicine has gone, especially for humans," Louis explained further.
"Wouldn’t that put her more at risk?" Jael asked with a defeated sigh. "Besides, this is a vampire baby, as you have said. I doubt it would be that easy to do something like that. I’m not considering it... I just," he sighed. "I’m not an idiot. I know now is not a good time for her to go through something like this, even if it was a regular preg—"
The door pushed open, and Jael felt all the blood drain from his face as Mauve appeared at the door. It was so unexpected that he didn’t know how to react for a couple of seconds. He also hadn’t sensed her coming closer, which was also a little weird.
"Oh, did I interrupt something important?" she asked and then turned to Jael. "Why do you look so pale? Are you getting enough rest?"
Jael crossed the space between them and was by her side in a second. "What are you doing here? I told you to stay in your room." He sounded harsh, and he hated it. He couldn’t hide the guilt from his face or his voice. She could have heard him, in another second he would have completed the word.
Mauve shrank a little, and he cursed internally. "I didn’t mean to interrupt," she said. "I guess I should have thought about it more before coming here, but Mill was getting on my nerves, and I wanted to scold Louis about it because I know it was his idea."
Jael smelled it; it was the scent of tears. It wasn’t strong, but he was close enough to not miss it. He wanted to punch himself in the gut. He wanted to take a knife and spill out his guts.
"I’m sorry," he said and pulled her close. "I didn’t mean to sound like that."
She hugged him back, and he breathed in her scent. "I didn’t mean to interrupt. If I knew it would make you yell at me, I wouldn’t have come."
"I didn’t mean to yell at you. I was just shocked at your presence and reacted instinctively."
"This is my fault," Mill said and bowed. "I should have stopped her."
"No, it’s not Mill’s fault; it’s mine," Mauve said, sniffling on him.
Jael rubbed her back. "It doesn’t matter. I shouldn’t have spoken to you like that, irrespective of the situation. What did you say you were here for?"
"Well," Mauve said, looking up at Jael, cheering up quickly. Her face was still littered with sprinkles of tears as she looked up at him. "Mill keeps calling me ’my lady.’ It is so weird, and I think Louis put her up to it."
