Chapter 624: 624. Garden Suggestions

"What do you say?" Jean asked, shuffling his feet.

"That sounds like a pretty good idea that would be very beneficial for me," Mauve replied, clasping her hands together.

"Good," he smiled. "You could also plant some in your garden. That way, you won’t have to go looking for them when you need them," he suggested.

"Oh, yeah, I could do that. Do you know anything about medicinal plants? How to plant them and how to make sure they grow properly? I doubt it would be that easy to figure out. I don’t want to mess it up trying to do it all by myself."

"I do know how, and I’d be more than happy to show you. Also, medicinal plants tend to be natural repellents, so if insects bother your plants, they would prevent that."

"Seriously?" Mauve asked with bright eyes. "That’s wonderful. Thank you so much, Jean. I do need that. It isn’t a major concern yet, but I can tell I might have to start worrying about that soon. They have already started giving me signs of their presence."

"Happy to help," he replied, trying to adjust his hair again.

Mauve nodded, smiling brightly. "I’ll be back by dawn." She started to walk away but stopped when Jean spoke again.

"Do you think His Highness would agree?" Jean asked.

Mauve slowly turned around and smiled stiffly at Jean. "Don’t worry about it. I’ll speak to him."

Jean nodded, but she could tell he didn’t believe her. She couldn’t fault him; she didn’t believe herself either. Breaking this news to Jael would be difficult, and his reaction would likely be similar. She knew he wouldn’t be pleased about it.

"Okay," Jean said, bowing.

Mauve turned and started walking away again. She heard the door close and glanced back to see Jean was no longer standing there. She wondered if he had gone back to sleep; he really did look a mess, which was why she wanted to send him off as soon as she could.

Mauve brought her index finger to her lips, biting her nail. She held this position for a few seconds before pulling her hand away from her lips. She wasn’t going to back down and would do her best to convince Jael to let her step out.

Unfortunately, Jael had no one he could listen to, no one she could speak to that would help convince him that she would be safe and it would be okay to step out. Why was he so stubborn?

The timing was also terrible due to the issue that had arisen during the first meal. She hoped it was nothing serious and wondered if she could offer some comfort now and make her request later.

It would be hard to get Jael to say yes, but it wasn’t impossible. Besides, he did say he didn’t like to tell her no. She could push on this. Unfortunately, she had no idea where he was. If he was out of the castle, she would have to wait until he came back, and usually, that wouldn’t be until the second meal. Mauve didn’t want to wait that long.

She walked to the stairway, wondering if she should just check his study or ask around. But who could she ask? She had barely completed this thought when she heard the sound of a door closing and turned to see Erick stepping out of a room.

Her face brightened immediately; she could definitely ask him. The problem was he might not be willing to answer her questions. She stood at the top of the stairs, watching him approach while his gaze darkened as he realized she was waiting for him.

"Do you know where Jael is, please?" she asked as politely as she could. She didn’t want to set him off; she really needed a response.

He didn’t look like he planned to answer and started heading down the stairs. Mauve groaned, realizing she would either have to ask someone else or search for Jael herself.

"He should be in his study," Erick’s gruff voice reached her ears.

"Thank you," she replied eagerly and rushed down the stairs, passing him. She reached the library floor and hurried down without hesitation. Speeding past her room, she didn’t stop until she stood in front of the study door. Mauve raised her hand and knocked twice.

Getting no response, she was about to knock again when the door opened suddenly, and her hand almost hit Jael’s chest, but he caught it.

"Did something happen?" he asked, holding her hand and looking past her. "Is someone chasing you?" he asked darkly.

"What?" Mauve asked, a little confused. "No!"

"You were running," he observed, looking down at her face.

"Yeah," she admitted, looking at her feet. "I wanted to see you."

"Oh," Jael gently pried her clenched palm open and caressed her palm. "Why?"

"Well," she cleared her throat, trying to ignore his light touch on her palm. "Erick said you were here, and I was worried," she replied, lifting her head to look at him.

She hoped she only looked worried, which wasn’t a lie, but it wasn’t the only reason she was here, and she hoped her expression didn’t give that away. Jael had always been pretty good at reading her.

"I see," he said, pulling her closer. He shut the door behind her and stepped closer; Mauve instinctively stepped back until she hit the door with her back. His blue eyes pierced into hers, and Mauve found herself staring back.

There was only one candle lit in the study, and it certainly wasn’t enough to brighten the room or give enough illumination to his face. It didn’t help that his back blocked most of the light, but Mauve could still see his eyes clearly.

"Did something bad happen?" she asked, seeing his eyes stray to her lips.

"Maybe," he mumbled. "But right now, it isn’t important." He brought her hand down and placed it on himself, and Mauve gasped.
