Chapter 603: 603. Nothing’s Wrong

Jael gave Mauve a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. She knew immediately that he was going to tell her it was nothing to worry about.

Her heart squeezed at this and she could already feel the disappointment even before he gave his reply.

"There is nothing wrong," he said, his smile holding in place even as he spoke. "Things have just been a little busy is all. I want you to concentrate on getting better."

Mauve nodded, his words were so expected she could have recited them with him. As much as she hated it, she didn’t press.

She returned his smile, hoping that at least hers reached her eyes. "I understand, I will do what I need to do."

His smile brightened and the corner of his eyes wrinkled as it matched his smile. She almost laughed at this. She would take consolation in the fact that her health was more important to him than anything else.

"Where do you want to go?" He asked again.

She wondered if he felt relief at the fact that she didn’t press but wondered about what could be so bad that he would rather tell her nothing was wrong no matter how many times she asked.

"The Library," she responded. "I haven’t been there in a while. I… I just want to read some books."

She forced a smile at him realizing she almost told on herself. Louis would not be pleased but neither would he be if he found out what she was about to do.

"Okay," he took her hand again and led her up the stairs.

They walked in silence and Mauve leaned into him. It was hard to not let her thoughts wander and she found that her curiosity was getting the best of her.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t begin to guess what was going on and that bothered her. The only thing she could guess was that things weren’t going so well with hunting Palers. She hoped it wasn’t that the drug Kieran made wasn’t working anymore.

Her thoughts spun and she didn’t realize they were in front of the library until Jael announced their presence.

"We are here," he said, his tone neutral.

"Oh," she replied as she pulled away from him.

"Are you okay?" He asked as he looked down at her.

She smiled up at him, "Yeah, my thoughts just strayed for a minute."

He frowned slightly as his gaze roamed her face, trying to read it. "Should I be worried?" He asked.

"No," she said and closed the gap between them. Resting her head on his chest, she said, "Have a good one, I will see you when you’re done."

She tried to pull away but he wrapped his arm around her, hugging her tightly. The side of her face pressed against his chest and she could almost hear his heartbeat. It sounded muffled to her ears. She could hear it but not quite.

"Yeah," he replied before reluctantly letting her go.

He pushed open the doors of the library and Mauve winced. It was pitch black, she couldn’t see past the end of the open doors where the light from the hallway stopped. No one had been there yet to light the candles.

"Let me take care of that for you," Jael replied as he immediately took in the situation.

Before she could reply he walked into the dark library and she immediately lost sight of him.

Mauve shuffled on her feet as she waited. Most days she forgot but on days like this, she remembered just how different she was from vampires.

Jael was back out only about a couple of seconds later and in his hand was an unlit candle. He put it to the torch in the hallway and went back into the library.

This time around Mauve followed behind him but she wasn’t fast enough and walked into a lit enough library for her to go about whatever she wanted to do.

She watched him place the original candle on the desk she usually sat to read and he walked to her.

"Anything else?" He asked with a smug look.

She shook her head, "That was pretty impressive."

"Was it?" He asked with a shrug. "You have seen it before though."

He was trying to be dismissive about the subject but she could tell he was proud of her compliment.

"Have I?" She asked with a smirk.

"Yeah," he kissed the top of her head. His lips lingered a second more than they needed to and Mauve let herself lean into it.

He pulled away from her and pinched the bridge of her nose.

"Ow!" She cried, grabbing it but he didn’t respond to her cry as he started for the door.

Mauve was still holding her nose as he watched him slip out through the doors. He closed them and she suddenly felt alone. Well, she was but she could also feel it.

Without wasting much time she picked up the candle and walked to the shelf. She didn’t know what she was looking for exactly but was certain she would as soon as she laid eyes on it.

She planned to do a little research on her own. Louis said she couldn’t ask him any questions nor could he teach her magic until she got better but there was nowhere he said she could find out more information on her own.

Maybe it was boredom getting to her or her patience had finally worn thin but she was worried she would probably never find out anything at the rate she was healing.

She paused briefly to look at her skin, it was mostly covered. She was glad Mill never questioned her decision to keep them covered.

It was weird how she felt completely fine now but the discoloration on her skin said otherwise.

Maybe she could find some answers in the magic books. She laughed at the thought of this.

Still, even though she wouldn’t find anything, it was definitely something that would keep her busy and she gladly welcomed the expedition.
