Chapter 593: 593. A Dog

The first meal ended pretty well. She ate to her heart’s content, enjoying the conversation that went around.

It was nice to be around people again, instead of constantly being cooped up in the room. It was like she was cursed or something.

The first meal ended faster than she would have wanted and she was walking out of the dining arm in arm with Jael.

"Where are you headed?" He asked.

She didn’t miss the look on his face. She could tell that if she gave him an answer he didn’t like very much, he would refuse.

"The library," she started, when he didn’t react, she added, "The garden too."

He pulled his elbow a bit closer to himself, squeezing her arm a little but not enough to be uncomfortable. He didn’t like this.

"Why the garden?" He asked. "Mack takes care of it and I am sure he does a pretty good job."

"It’s my garden," she whispered. "And I haven’t seen it in almost two weeks at this point."

"It is barely two weeks," he retorted.

"Which is approximately three weeks," she ventured.

He shook his head, clearly not amused. "Okay," he said with a loud groan. "But don’t touch anything."

"That’s not possible and it’s just a little tending, I won’t do anything strenuous."

"The plants won’t die if they wait another week. It is either that or nothing."

"Jael," she called with surprise. "You can’t do that."

"Watch me," he said stubbornly.

"Fine, since you insist but only for the rest of the week. Besides, you won’t know if I do it behind your back." She rolled her eyes and tried to pull her arm away from him.

He didn’t let her. "Don’t even think about it," he said as they got to the foot of the stairs. "I will smell it off you."

He stared down hard at her. He looked stern as he spoke, his brows were dipped a little and his forehead creased.

"You dog," she accused.

His face softened immediately and she could see signs of a smile. "I have never had anyone call me a dog before."

"You’re welcome."

"I suppose I am," his tone turned serious once again. "I don’t want you to fall sick again so for the next couple of days would you please adhere to my wishes?" He asked.

Mauve sighed and glared at him at the corner of her eyes. "Since you are asking so nicely. I will think about it."

"So nice of you," Jael said sarcastically. "Where would you like to go? I could walk you to it before I go out to the field."

Looking at him square in the face as they got to the top of the stairs she said, "The garden."

Jael blinked and then threw his head back in laughter. She was trying to piss him off but he wasn’t reacting as she wanted.

"I am serious," she said, annoyed at his reaction.

"I know but I thought what you did was funny."

"I wasn’t trying to be funny," she said with puffed-out cheeks.

"Really? Don’t tell me you plan to go against our agreement."

"I already said I wouldn’t and it isn’t exactly an agreement, you forced my hand."

"I wouldn’t say that. You make it sound as if I held a knife to your neck." He smirked, growing continuously amused.

"At this point, I don’t know the difference," she stated.

"It’s just for a few days. You can play with all the dirt you want when you’re much better."

"Dirt?" She asked in horror. "Is that what you think of my garden?"

"Of course not," Jael replied. "You know that is not what I meant in any way."

"I am not deaf, I clearly heard you say dirt."

"Only because you have to mess with—" The rest of his words dried up and he looked down the stairs.

Mauve followed his gaze and immediately noticed Louis coming up the stairs.

"I can hear your argument from here. It’s so ridiculous, I can’t believe you both are rambling that much about something so stupid."

"Louis," Jael called, ignoring Louis’ words as he turned his gaze to Mauve. "Take Mauve to the garden."

Mauve gasped, "Are you serious right now? You are not going with me because of that."

Jael’s eyes widened as he realized. "What? Of course not. I was going to get someone to watch you as I wouldn’t be able to stay with you even if I followed you there."

"Are you sure it’s not because you’re mad?" She asked.

"Do you want me to be mad?" He closed the gap between them.

Mauve gasped and stepped back almost losing her footing but her grabbed her waist and held her.

"No," she whispered, looking away.

"I understand that you’re bored and being indoors has made you a bit cranky," his voice was soft as he spoke and his stare unwavering. "But you shouldn’t take it out on me. That’s what Louis is for!"

"Wait a damn minute, what? Who made that rule?"

Jael didn’t answer to this, instead, he carefully steadied Mauve and slowly took his hand from her back.

"I will see you later," he said and bent to kiss the top of her head.

She nodded, not sure if she had the words to speak.

"I will come back to check on you as soon as I can. Promise not to do anything I don’t want you to."

"I already promised," she said. She didn’t like the fact that Louis was giving them a mocking look.

"I want to hear you say it again," he commanded.

The words were flowing from her lips even before she could even think about it. "Yes, Sire."

He looked shocked briefly and she smiled. He pulled away shaking his head. "I will deal with you later," he said and walked away.

He walked past Louis who was standing still in the middle of the stairway. Jael didn’t even glance in Louis’ direction and Mauve realized even when he spoke to Louis, Jael didn’t look at him. She wondered if things were still a bit weird between them.

"I didn’t need to see that," Louis said as he started up the stairs. "But of course as usual neither of you care about my feelings." He sighed loudly as he stopped in front of Mauve. "Shall we?" He asked, offering his arm.
