Chapter 589: 589. Too Mad

Mauve heard the sound of the door open, but she didn’t attempt to see who it was, primarily because she already knew. Instead, she rolled onto her front and kept her eyes shut.

She heard the door close, and the silence stretched on. Though it gnawed at her, she was determined not to let her curiosity compel her to turn to Jael.

He knew she was awake and was ignoring him. Well, it wasn’t like he said anything so technically, she wasn’t ignoring him.

He sat on the bed and lightly touched her. She didn’t react and still kept her head turned away from him.

"Mauve," he called, gently stroking her back.

Mauve didn’t respond to Jael’s call and kept her eyes closed.

"Do you intend to ignore me?" He asked, his tone heavy.

"I am not ignoring you," she finally said. "I would just rather be left alone."

"Is this about earlier?" He asked.

"I am sure you can take a guess," she said dismissively.

"Don’t be like that," he whispered and leaned closer.

He was close enough to touch the side of her face. She could almost feel his face against hers but he didn’t move any closer just hovered at an annoying distance.

Unable to take it anymore Mauve opened her eyes and turned around to glare at him. He looked down at her with a smiling face.

"Don’t smile, I am angry."

"I know," he said and leaned in.

She turned her face away before his lips could touch hers.

"Ouch," he replied. "Is there no way I can make this better?"

"Why would you want to keep it away from me?"

"I am not keeping anything from you," he said.

"Yes, you are!" She replied darkly. "Don’t you dare look me in the eye and lie to me."

"I would never," he grinned.

"You’re lying now."

"No, I am not. Do you want to know what I and Jean talked about?" He pulled away from her as he spoke.

He lay on the bed with his palms behind his head for support. She sat upright and stared down at him in disbelief.

"I can’t believe you asked that. Of course, I want to know."

"And you will," Jael said and touched the side of her face. "I just need you to concentrate on getting better. Let me deal with the inconsequential details."

"What? Trying to find out what’s wrong with me isn’t inconsequential," she mumbled, not hiding her irritation.

"I already told you."

Mauve didn’t like his nonchalance. "You are not taking me seriously, are you?"

Jael’s eyes flew to her face. "Don’t say that."

"I want to know what you and Jean discussed. I don’t like that you won’t tell me."

Jael sighed, "I guess you won’t let this go until you find out everything now even though I intend to tell you later."

"I want to know now."

"Jean says you’re getting better, that’s the gist of it."

"I want all the details," she yelled out stubbornly.

"He is convinced you had the White Disease."

"I thought you said he wasn’t sure about that?" She blinked, looking at Jael with horror in her eyes.

"I may have said otherwise but only because he didn’t sound so sure himself and I wasn’t about to break such terrible news to you when he didn’t know for certain."

She took a deep breath as she tried to process the information. "And how long did you intend to keep that from me?" She asked, her voice breaking with emotion.

Jael sat up immediately as if realizing the intensity of the situation. "Not long, I promise. I just didn’t like the idea that we were going off assumptions."

"Why didn’t you think about me being left in the dark? Wrong or not, I would have liked to know." Mauve asked.

She couldn’t believe she was talking about this, she figured they were past this already.

"I didn’t keep it from you," he mumbled.

"But you did," she accused. "You made it sound as though Jean had no idea but he did."

Jael held his temples with his middle finger and the thumb of his right hand. He held this position for a minute, hiding his face from Mauve.

"I didn’t mean it the way you think," he replied, pulling his hand out of his face.

"I know but when you go against my wishes like this it is hard to know for sure."

"It wasn’t my intention and I am sorry."

Mauve pouted at him for a long second. He scooted closer, his eyes staring hard at hers.

"Am I forgiven?" He asked.

She shook her head, "You didn’t seem to think it was a big deal."

"I didn’t want to bother you," he replied. "You were sick, are still sick. I’d rather deal with that myself."

"I don’t like that," she replied. "No matter what, I prefer to know."

Jael nodded, "I would have told you eventually."

"I want to be told immediately!" She replied.

"Yes ma’am," he responded. "Am I forgiven?" He asked again.

"Not yet. I will need a few days."

"Mauve," he leaned into her, his forehead almost touching hers. "I don’t like when you’re mad at me."

"I am not mad, I am just giving you a taste of your own medicine."

"Not fair," he whispered.

She pushed herself against him and he caught her. "Same thing I thought."

"Know that I only thought of you while withholding the information."

"I know but it makes me think you don’t think I can handle anything."

"That’s not true, you’re more capable than anyone I know."

"Your actions indicate otherwise sometimes. I get that you want to protect me but it almost feels like you have no faith in me."

He held her tighter. "I am sorry. I trust you with my life," he said.

"And I you. I know you meant no harm." She said against his chest. "But don’t do it again."

"I promise I won’t. I love you."

"I love you too. But wait!" She yelled, pulling away from his arms. "Jean thinks I am getting better?"

She had been so preoccupied with being angry at Jael for keeping her in the dark that she completely ignored the most important thing he said.

Jael laughed, "That’s just registering?"

She nodded, "I was too mad to pay attention to the good news."

"That’s my fault," Jael admitted.

"No arguments there," she said and he laughed.
