Chapter 585. Endless

Chapter 585: 585. Endless

Jael rocked Mauve as he held her in his arms. She had her head on his chest and beads of sweat clustered around her forehead. She didn’t look to have any strength as Jael held her closely to himself.

Mauve felt sore both internally and externally. She had just spent the past couple of minutes throwing up everything she had eaten today.

Not the mention having to wash off the ointment not long after Mill had applied it as it made her very itchy.

She had assumed she was getting better but now she just felt sicker than ever. It was a vicious cycle that she couldn’t wait to see the end. It was annoying that it felt as though it would never end.

"I feel sick," she mumbled on the verge of tears.

"I know," Jael replied. His voice was heavy. "I truly wish we had been able to figure out what is wrong and treat it accordingly. I hate that you are going through this."

He rubbed the top of her head and Mauve squeezed into him. Her body felt heavy and she just wanted to sit here in his arms.

"How’s your head?"

"Terrible," she replied with a wince. "I think throwing up made it worse."

"At least your temperature isn’t increasing," Jael replied.

"At least," she said but at this point, she was willing to take a high temperature if it meant she wouldn’t have to deal with anything else.

"Don’t sound so sad."

"I just feel miserable," she whined. "What is wrong with my body? Surely, with all the treatment I have gotten, I should have made some progress. I haven’t. I am still as sick as the first day. I am worried I may never get better."

"Don’t say that!" Jael scolded. "We will figure something out."

"I don’t really believe that," she mumbled. "Of course, I am not going to give up but I can’t help but feel that way sometimes."

"I know. Jean should be back with something to help the headache."

Mauve nodded. She wanted to tell Jael she was sick of taking herbs but she kept that to herself. If it meant she would get better she would gladly take all the drugs she needed to.

"He is here," Jael announced.

Mauve tried to look to the door and instantly regretted changing her position. She laid her head back on Jael’s chest and prayed the headache would ease up just a bit.

"Come in," Jael called out as Jean knocked.

The physician stepped on with a sad walk. His shoulders were slumped down and his gaze was glued to the ground.

He bowed and even when he stood to his full height he still didn’t look up at either of them.

"This should help with the headache," he replied when he got close enough.

Mauve looked at it and winced. She didn’t like the way her stomach was already telling her it was a bad idea.

He stretched it out her and she caught sight of the steam. Jael accepted it from Jean on her behalf.

"Here," Jael said, bringing it to her lips.

"Are you sure I won’t throw this up?" Mauve asked. She was sure she didn’t want to go through that again.

Jean gave her a look she didn’t like, he showed he was just as helpless as she was and Mauve sighed.

She moved her head so her lips would align with the rim of the cup and gulped the contents before she chickened out.

The taste wasn’t an issue and it slid down her throat better than she expected.

Jael pulled the cup away from her and handed it back to Jean. "You did great," he praised but all she could do was hum her response.

"Please rest in bed and I am really sorry about the ointment. I didn’t expect you to react to it."

"It is fine," she said. He had already apologized earlier, he didn’t need to do it again. She hadn’t thought he was trying to make her situation worse.

The only thing the ointment had done was make her skin a little red and that had calmed down in about an hour after Mill scrubbed her clean.

She didn’t feel itchy and the white patches were still there. However, they weren’t spreading, she would take that as a good sign.

"I will be back to check on you. Please, get enough rest, and don’t move unless you have to."

Mauve nodded and Jean walked back the way he came. She heard the door close and knew he was gone.

"You’re awfully quiet," she said to Jael after a few seconds passed and he didn’t say a word.

"Am I?"

"Uh-hm," she replied and drew a circle over his shirt.

"I don’t have much to say," he said.

"Same," she mumbled. "I am just tired of being sick and putting you through this."

"I am not complaining. I just wish there was a way to figure out what to do fast enough. You have lost so much weight," he said. "The white in your hair also seems more than usual too."

"You’re joking," she said and grabbed a handful of her hair to see.

"Okay, maybe I am."

"Phew, I was starting to wonder if the white patches may have spread to my scalp. Don’t scare me like that."

"I wasn’t trying to scare you," he said and carefully caressed her temples. "Are the herbs working for the headache yet?" He asked.

"No," Mauve mumbled and let out a satisfying sound. "But your fingers are."

Jael laughed. "Would you like something to eat?" He asked. "I am sure you are hungry."

"That’s a bad idea. I don’t have much of an appetite either," she replied.

"You have to eat, it’s already past midnight and everything you have taken in, you’ve poured right out."

"I don’t think that would change," she replied. "I am tired of throwing up. I know if I eat, it would just be the same thing again." She clung to Jael and she heard him sigh.

"I would do anything to make you get better. I hate seeing you like this."

"I know," she replied. "I can’t wait to get better too."
