The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 572. Hope
Chapter 572: 572. Hope
"If I have the white disease. There is a high chance I will die," Mauve mumbled.
She watched the color fade from Jael’s face. She didn’t think a vampire could get any paler but Jael showed her it was.
However, he recovered quickly, his expression hardening. "That’s not going to happen," he said without hesitation, leaving no room for argument.
"Yeah," she said, her lips turning into a thin line. "I am most likely just mistaken."
Jael didn’t say anything to this, rather, he stretched out his hands and pulled Mauve into his legs, holding her close.
She pressed her face onto his shirt and bit the inside of her cheeks to stop herself from crying.
He held her like that for a few seconds, rocking her on his legs as she sat across them.
"I will go get Kieran to check it. He might not know what it is but he might have some idea and tell us where to go from there at least until Jean gets here."
"Okay," she whispered, taking a deep breath as she tried to calm down.
"Don’t think about it. Until we have tried everything you’re not allowed to think like and even if we have I am sure you’ll get better. You’ve dealt with worse and bounced back pretty hard."
Mauve sniffled and nodded, chuckling lightly. She hadn’t expected him to bring up the Paler incident but he was right. Compared to that, this was child’s play.
The pain she had experienced was unlike anything she could imagine. She was here, alive and kicking, the pain almost forgotten. The only reminder was the fading scars on her arm.
"I suppose I have," she whispered.
"I won’t let anything happen to you," he kissed the top of her head.
Mauve could tell he meant every word. It gave her a form of reassurance, and hope that this was not the end of the road for her.
She just got everything she had ever dreamt of and now the chance of that being taken away from her was almost glaring.
"I know," she replied. "I will do what I need to do to get better."
"I should have sent for the physician earlier. That was my mistake, as soon as you fell ill, I should have done that."
"No, don’t say that," she replied. "Besides, Jean will be here in only a few days. I am still well enough to wait."
Jael sighed, "Your temperature says otherwise."
"It’s nothing to worry about," she whispered, enjoying the fact that it was her turn to tell him not to worry.
She cozied up to him, rubbing her body against his.
"If you say so," he replied with a smile. "I should go get Kieran so he can tell us what he thinks."
"No," she cried, stopping him from moving.
"I am sure you can get someone to call him. I don’t want you to leave me."
Mauve didn’t like the thought that passed through her mind so she pushed it away before it became any clearer.
The thought went along the lines of she wanted to spend as much time with Jael while she could.
"You’re right," he replied.
Kieran walked into the room less than five minutes after Jael sent a servant to get him.
His lanky figure walked into the room with a confused and concerned expression on his face.
"Your Grace, you called," he said with a bow.
"Yes," Jael responded without further explanation.
Kieran stood to his full height and walked further into the room. He didn’t stop until he got to the side of the bed.
On the bed, Jael was sitting with Mauve on his legs. He cradled her and clung to him. She poked her head up to look at Kieran as he walked to them.
"Is something wrong?" Kieran asked as he stopped right beside the bed.
"I wouldn’t say that but I was curious if you knew what this was?" Jael explained.
Kieran squinted his eyes as Mauve stretched out her arm. He bent his figure, his gaze scanning as he wondered what he was looking for.
"Here," Jael pointed at the white patch.
Kieran’s face showed surprise but he immediately masked it. Mauve didn’t miss it, if she hadn’t been looking for it, she would have.
"What do you think it is?" Jael asked.
"I am not sure. I have never seen anything like this before."
"I see but do you think it is a cause for concern?" Jael asked.
Kieran paused for a bit as he thought deeply about Jael’s question. "I don’t know. I am unfamiliar with this." He turned to Mauve, "Does it hurt?" He asked.
She shook her head, "No, only that it is spreading."
Kieran jerked his head to her face. "Spreading?" He asked.
"Yes," she replied.
"Where else?" Kieran eyes did a quick scan of her body as he searched for it.
"My lower stomach, all over my abdomen."
"And it doesn’t hurt or feel weird?" He frowned.
She shook her head.
"No pus?" Kieran asked.
Mauve shook her head again. "None of that. It’s just spreading a little too fast. The one on my arm appeared yesternight and the ones on my stomach–they are a lot bigger than this–appeared tonight."
Kieran took a step back," I don’t know," he replied. "I haven’t read anything like this."
"What do you think we should do?"
Kieran looked visibly stressed. "You have never had any symptoms like this? Is it completely unfamiliar to you?"
"She thinks it’s the white disease?" Jael said.
Kieran glanced and Mauve, "You’re sure."
"About 70%," she replied, repeating the words she had said to Jael.
"Do you know about it?" Jael asked.
"Only hearsay, it hasn’t been around long enough for there to be any tangible records about it. This is the first time I have seen what it is supposed to look like."
"I see," Jael whispered. "Thank you for your help."
Kieran bowed and hurriedly walked to the door. Mauve didn’t like the dark look in his eyes. Her only hope was to wait for the physician to get here.
