Chapter 530. A Knock

Chapter 530: 530. A Knock

Mauve watched Mill stiffen as the knock rang out. She could tell Mill didn’t appreciate the interruption.

Sabrina looked to Mill and then to Mauve. "Are you expecting anyone?" She asked.

Mauve shook her head, she wasn’t. Except Louis no one else would come to her room and she didn’t think the meeting was over yet.

"I will check," Mill said and pushed herself off the bed. She dropped the yarn on the bed and walked to the door.

"Who is it?" She asked.

"Mill," Jael said. "Would you open the door?"

It was hard to decide who was more horrified. Mill quickly nodded and turned the handle while Sabrina sat upright, adjusting her hair and dress.

Mauve, however, was unfazed and her thoughts were more on the fact that he knocked than he being on the other side of the door.

She jumped to her feet and rushed to him as he walked in. She watched his face soften a little as it rested on her.

"Sire," Mill was saying with her head bowed. "I had no idea it was you. Please forgive me."

"You are forgiven," he said absentmindedly as Mauve stood in front of him.

"What are you doing here?" She grinned. "Don’t you have a meeting to oversee?" She asked.

The sight of him made her stomach do backflips and handstands. She was happy and she couldn’t even pretend otherwise.

"It ended," he replied and touched the side of her face.

"Fast?" He asked. "I wouldn’t say that."

"Your Grace," Sabrina’s voice reached Mauve’s ear and she turned to see Sabrina standing by the bed with her head bent.

"Lady Sabrina," Jael said, it was hard to tell what he was thinking. "I see you weren’t at the meeting."

"I-I didn’t see t-the..." She tried to say. Mauve had never seen her struggle for words before.

"Don’t worry there is no penalty involved. I shall be interrupting your fun by taking Mauve with me," he said.

"There is no problem, Sire. We were just about done here," Sabrina lied and

Mauve held back a chuckle.

"Mill," Jael said and he grabbed Mauve’s palm.

"Sire," she replied, her head lower than ever.

Jael dragged Mauve to the door of her room and led her out. He closed the door behind them and headed to his room next door.

Mauve rushed after him, his impatience made her a little concerned. Was that why he came to her room? Was something wrong?

She bit the inside of her cheeks. It was hard to say for sure but Jael didn’t seem like anything was wrong. She could tell he was a bit tense though but nothing worrisome.

He opened the door and Mauve blinked at the darkness. He pulled her inside and closed the door behind her.

Without any warning, he lifted her off her feet and walked deeper into his room. Mauve had to keep her palm over her lips to keep from squealing.

He pulled back the curtains but it was barely any light. He got into his bed, sitting with his back against the backrest and her across his arms.

"Jael," she called softly, touching the side of his face. "Did something happen?" The silence was killing her.

"Yes," he whispered and pulled her to himself burying his head in her neck, and took a deep breath.

"What?" She asked in horror and pulled back to see his face. Not that it would have made much difference. The light wasn’t bright enough for her to see him.

Jael took a deep breath, "Wait a minute," he whispered and leaned to the side of the bed. He lit the candle on the table and turned to Mauve.

The candle wasn’t bright enough for the whole room but it was definitely enough to illuminate his face.

She gently touched him, her eyes filled with concern as she studied his face. "What happened?" She asked again.

Jael took a deep breath, "I just missed you so much, being with the Lords was boring. I thought I’d die."

"Jael," she cried. "I was really worried.

"I know," he said and kissed her forehead. "I like it when you’re worried about me."

She scoffed and turned around so she had her back to him. "I am guessing the meeting went well."

"Hmm, I wouldn’t say that." He buried his nose in the back of her head. "You didn’t miss me?"

"Jael," she scolded. "You’re going off-topic."

"You’re no fun," he mumbled.

"Jael, I am serious," she replied, glancing back at him before looking away.

"I know," he replied and wrapped his arms around her belly. "But the meeting isn’t worth talking about."

"I still want to hear about it," she responded.

Jael shook his head, "I have something better," he whispered directly into her ears.

"What’s that?" She asked, leaning into him. She closed her eyes, enjoying the sound of his baritone voice.

Silence.

"Jael," she turned around to look at his face and he was smiling. Mauve felt her breath catch. "What?" She asked softly this time.

"Your maid is gone," he replied, looking very proud of himself.

Mauve frowned, "What does that mean?" She asked as she tried to stop her imagination from running wild. There was no need to jump to conclusions, she could wait to hear what Jael had to say.

"I got her away from Seraphino and right now she should be on her way to human territory. I don’t know how long it would take them to get her there but I am sure she would get there safely."

Mauve looked at Jael with her mouth agape. She didn’t know how to respond to what and just heard.

She broke from her trance and jumped at him, burying her face in his chest. "Thank you so much," she replied, hugging him tightly.

"Technically, you shouldn’t thank me..."

"I should, I know it wouldn’t have been possible without you." Mauve felt water in her eyes as she spoke. She was glad, happy. She had been a little worried they would not be able to get Vae out. She was happy she had been worried for nothing.
