Chapter 527. Rescue
Chapter 527: 527. Rescue
"Climbing up there won’t be a problem, it’s getting down that would be the issue."
"Yeah, I thought about throwing her down and letting you catch her," Mack said.
Louis crackled but stopped when he saw the look on Mack’s face. "Wait, you’re serious?" Louis asked in horror.
"What’s wrong with it? It will be faster than figuring out how to get down with her."
"No!" Louis said sternly. "We are not going to fling her out the window."
"You will be down here to catch her," Mack said confidently.
"No, none of that. Besides, I’ll be the one to go up. You wait here."
"Are you sure about that because I am pretty sure my original idea is better and it would save us more time?"
Louis shook his head as he tried to process Mack’s words, unsure if it was a joke or not.
"You stay here. I won’t throw her to you but in the unfortunate circumstance that she slips out of my grip and falls, catch her."
Mack nodded, his expression showed hesitation and confusion but he didn’t voice them.
Louis nodded and looked up at the building. Was the castle always this tall? The back was flat, there were barely any crevices he could see that would assist him in climbing. He would have to jump from window to window.
He already hated this and by the looks of things, it was going to get worse from here. He cracked his neck and bent his knees then jumped.
Louis caught the first window easily and propelled himself to the next one. It wasn’t until he got to the window on the third floor that he realized the window he was supposed to go in through wasn’t open.
Louis shut his eyes briefly, he hoped there was enough space from his hand to hang off while he convinced her to open the window. Was she even close enough to reach?
She didn’t know him. Would she trust him? Maybe he should have sent Mack. He should have known it would turn out like this, he had listened to Jael.
Louis pulled himself out of his thoughts. Hanging off the window was and he had to quickly figure out how he would get into the next one.
Furthermore, he couldn’t be out for too long. He needed to return to the meeting before he raised any suspicions. It was his first meeting in a very long time, he was sure they were curious.
Louis propelled himself again. There was only any space for the tip of his fingers and he knew he would slip any moment.
He knocked on the closed window and whispered, "Open it."
He couldn’t afford to be loud. There was also the probability that she wasn’t alone. As much as he was curious about the outcome of getting caught, he wasn’t that curious when he was in such a compromising position.
Louis frowned, he couldn’t hear any movement from inside the room and he wondered if she could even hear him.
He wanted to know but that would be loud enough for vampires to pick up if they hadn’t already heard him.
Still, he couldn’t hang off the window for much longer with his fingers on the verge of breaking.
He stretched out his hand and knocked twice. This almost made him slip but he managed to hold on. Only for the windows to open and Louis lost his balance as the window smacked him right in the face.
His fingers slipped and he heard Vae’s slight gasp as he fell backward. Louis swore, the window had gotten him right in the nose. It will be sore for a few minutes.
He recovered quickly and grabbed onto the third-floor open window. This just kept getting better and better.
She looked out of the window and looked down at him. He wasn’t sure she could see him but he could clearly see him.
Her hair was unbrushed, a few strands stood up awkwardly and there was a cut on her lip but it didn’t compare to the injuries around her neck.
Louis shook his head, he couldn’t believe he was justifying this. However, Jael was right about one thing, it was a bad idea to leave this human with Seraphino even for another minute.
He still didn’t approve of the method they were using and he wished Jael had actually given the plan some proper thoughts.
He jumped again and thankfully, she moved out of his way in time. Louis landed right in the unlit room.
It smelled of blood and sweat. The fear oozing from the human was thick and undiluted. She stepped back, creating a huge space between them as she looked at him with fearful eyes.
She was dressed in a simple dress that looked like it needed to be tossed. There were no holes, thankfully. However, it was in no condition to be worn by anyone.
"Vae," he said and took a step forward. "I’m Louis, Mauve sent me here to get you out of here."
She looked skeptical but only for a moment before she closed the distance. However, she was still cautious as she didn’t come close enough to touch.
She was peering at him hard and Louis could tell she was struggling to see his face. He hoped he didn’t appear threatening.
"I am going to get the rope off your neck." He stretched out his hand but didn’t reach for her. He didn’t want to scare her.
She nodded and offered him her neck. He was surprised that she trusted him so easily but she didn’t have much choice. He figured she was thinking it was better to go with him than stay here another moment with Seraphino.
Louis nodded and stretched out his hand to undo the room. His brows dipped as he stared at the knot. There was no way this was coming undone.
He would have to cut it but he didn’t have anything to cut the ropes. He could try to rip it but he knew if he attempted that he would break her neck. He was supposed to get her out of her, not her corpse.
She blinked when he noticed he wasn’t going for her neck. She looked like she wanted to say something but held her tongue.
Louis grabbed the rope a significant distance from her neck and pulled on it with all his might. The rope snapped but not without leaving blisters on his palms.
At least Seraphino did not use chains. That would have been a hassle to get her out of. They would have had to abort the plan except somebody got their hands on the keys.
Her eyes brightened as the rope snapped and Louis could finally see some life in her. She was thinking that was healthy and by all the marks around her neck, Seraphino had definitely had his full. Louis’ gaze darkened. This was low even for the Lord.
She staggered a little and Louis rushed to grab her. She jumped as his hand touched her and if not for his quick reflexes she would have dropped to the ground with a loud sound.
He held her and she looked ready to jump out of her skin. "Relax," he whispered.
He knew he wasn’t helping but what else could he do in this situation?
"Can you hang onto my back?" He said as he slowly let go of her.
She nodded and Louis’ eyes narrowed. He was sure she could speak, Mauve would have mentioned it if she couldn’t but Vae had not said a single word to him.
Surely, fear wasn’t the reason she was mute. He wasn’t even that scary. He waved the thought away, all that mattered was safely getting her out of her and that was where his job ended. He truly couldn’t wait for all of this to be over.
He turned around, showing his back to her. A few seconds passed before she took a step forward.
"You arms around my neck," he whispered.
"Hm," she replied. He could almost see her nodding.
They didn’t have time to be taking it this slow but Louis realized he felt sorry for her and rushing her would only make her more agitated.
"Tighten your hold," you’ll slip off my back at this rate.
She did as he requested but her hold was still not strong enough. Louis wondered if this was because she didn’t have any strength.
He winced, he would have to make do with this. They didn’t have much time to waste. He was concerned about how much force she could take but there was barely any time to think about that. They needed to leave the room and they needed to leave now.
"Ready?" He asked and he felt her nod. With her on his back, he jumped out the window. His aim was the window down, it wasn’t too far but it was a full floor. He hoped she could handle the landing.
