Chapter 516: 516. Love-clouded Brain

"Took you long enough," Louis said with a scowl when Jael walked into his study.

Jael didn’t spare Louis a glance as he walked to his seat. "What are you doing here?" He asked dryly.

"What are you playing at?" Louis asked. "Surely, love hasn’t made you go senile."

Jael sighed, "You’re not the person I have business with. Therefore, we have nothing to discuss. I have a task for you..."

"Are you even listening to me?" Louis asked.

Jael finally lifted his gaze to look at Louis. "I need you to find a way to get Mauve to see Vae while I am keeping Seraphino busy. If anyone can do it, it will be you."

"Jael," Louis said darkly. "What are you playing at?"

"I don’t understand your question but you best be on your way as Seraphino will be here soon and the conversation I’d have with him will be private, so scram."

"Listen to me for goodness sake. Think about Mauve, it’s almost like you are actively trying to provoke the Lords. Just..." he took a deep breath. "Tone it down a little. You don’t want that kind of attention on Mauve. They can condone her because she doesn’t seem like a threat but other than making her sit next to you at a table of Lords, you go out to be openly affectionate. Tone it down for goodness sake. For Mauve’s sake."

"I think you’re worried about the wrong human. Right now, your concern should be how we can get Vae away from Seraphino. I don’t want to hear about anything else."

Louis sighed, not hiding his frustration. "Just be careful."

"Why? What are they going to do?" He scoffed.

"That kind of arrogance would get you in trouble. However, think about Mauve, you’re not the only one in this situation."

"I’d like to see someone hurt her," he whispered darkly.

"It’s like talking to a tree. Just be careful. I’ll do what you asked, I’ll get her to see the maid."

"Thank you," Jael mocked.

"I don’t want your thanks, I want you to think with a proper brain, not a love-clouded one. You’re like a human teenager who just found his first love."

"Your task, Louis. That’s what you should concentrate on. You don’t have to worry about me or Mauve, more importantly, Mauve, I got her covered."

"I hope," Louis said, his voice low. "Because, I don’t want to see something happen to her. More importantly, I don’t want to see you when something happens to her. You wouldn’t want to see yourself either."

As soon as the words left his lips, he turned around and walked towards the door. He opened it and came face to face with Seraphino.

Louis was taller than him by a few inches and he looked down at him. Seraphino’s gaze darkened before he took a step back and bowed.

"Lord Louis," he said with his head hanging low. "I didn’t see you there."

"Hmm," Louis said and walked past him.

Seraphino shot him a glare, it was piercing enough for Louis to feel it but he was unfazed, he merely shrugged his shoulders and walked on, his destination wasn’t far ahead.

"Unfortunately, I didn’t hear anything like that. Most of the vampires say it’s practically impossible," Mill whispered, her voice as gentle as possible.

Mauve’s heart fell to her stomach. Why did it hurt like this? She and Jael weren’t trying for a child. They have never even spoken anything in that regard.

Her stomach knotted. The idea that she would never be able to bear Jael’s child tore at her heart. It did make sense with all that they were doing, she would have taken in by now.

Mauve felt her chest tighten, it was hard to breathe but she knew it was because she was fighting the urge not to cry.

Why was she sad though? She knew why. She had entertained the idea of having Jael’s child. Lady Marceline had planted a seed and it had grown without her being aware.

At least she knew why Lord Alaric scolded Lady Marceline for teasing her. If the Lady knew it wasn’t possible, why would she tell her something like that?

She would have never thought on that line if she hadn’t brought it up but now it was all she could think about.

Jael’s child growing in her belly suddenly felt like the one thing that was sure to make her joy complete.

"Mauve," Mill said, giving her a sad look. "Please, don’t cry."

She stretched out her hand and wiped the corners of Mauve’s eyes. Mauve gave a sad laugh. She was crying. She wiped her tears.

"I am fine," she responded. "I just, I don’t know... I just..."

Mill closed the gap between them and wrapped her arms around Mauve. "I am so sorry."

"No, it’s not your fault. I shouldn’t be crying. We are different species, I should have known. I don’t know why I am crying, Mill. I can’t seem to stop the tears. It shouldn’t hurt this much but it does. I don’t get it. Jael never said he wanted a child from me but it breaks my heart so much that I’ll never be able to give him that."

She wailed as Mill ran her hands over her back. Her wail soon turned to a sob and then it seized.

She pulled away from Mauve. "I am so sorry. I don’t know what came over me," she was still wiping her eyes as she spoke.

"It’s fine," Mill said.

She gave a sad laugh, "It shouldn’t even be something to cry about. Oh no, I got snot all over your shoulders, I will wipe that now."

"No," Mill said and held Mauve’s hands as she tried to wipe Mill’s shoulders. "It’s not important. I can wash it off later. Your sadness is valid. There’s nothing wrong with you crying."

Mauve sniffled and wiped her face again. "I guess it is," she gave a sad chuckle.
