Chapter 509: 509. Hurt and Betrayed

"I will fix this," Jael said, his eyes locking with hers.

Mauve swallowed as the words fell out of Jael’s lips. The comfort in them was soothing. She believed him immediately.

She nodded and leaned into him, "Thank you," she whispered as they walked into the dining hall.

Mauve realized all her anxiousness about having to face the Lords was gone. Why wouldn’t it be? She had bigger things to worry about.

Compared to what Vae was facing, having to deal with a few vampire Lords while eating almost felt easy.

Mauve winced at the bright lights as they walked in. The lights on the ceiling had been turned on and three tables were set.

Mauve had always wondered why the dining hall was so huge yet they only seemed to use one table. She could see why now.

Jael walked toward their usual seat which was the table that was placed right in the middle of the huge hall and all the Lords stood to their feet.

Mauve frowned as the array of eyes landed on her. She could tell that more than half of them disapproved of her presence.

Jael led her to her usual seat which thankfully wasn’t taken. The middle table held Louis, Lady Marceline and her mate, Lord Alaric, Lord Levaton and his daughter Jevera, Kieran and Jael’s personal guards, and Kieran.

The other tables held the other Lords, some she recognized, others she didn’t. She noticed Corbin was at the opposite table.

He was back, he wasn’t at the second meal so it was safe to assume he arrived sometime after.

She could see a man with uncanny resemblance right next to him, she knew it was his father, Lord Phelan. She couldn’t remember if she had seen him before but he did look familiar.

Mauve kept her gaze down as Jael let her to her seat. He pulled out her chair and Mauve prayed the ground would open and swallow her as she heard a soft gasp.

It wasn’t audible enough to draw attention but Mauve could hear it clear as day. Surely, the ground crushing her would be easier than this.

She dropped to the chair and Jael sat on his seat before the Lords did the same.

"Sire," Lord Levaton spoke.

"Lord Levaton," Jael started. "Welcome."

Mauve fluttered her eyes to the Lord but brought it down quickly. His hair color which matched the fiery red of his daughter was hard to miss. He didn’t look very different from the last time they met.

"Thank you, Sire," he said stiffly.

Lady Jevera, however, kept her gaze straight ahead, refusing to glance in Jael’s direction.

Mauve swallowed, she didn’t need anyone to tell her this would be an awkward last meal of the night. Maybe, she should have sat this one out.

The servants moved quickly, serving the dishes as fast as they could. There were more servants in the hall than usual, even Mister Herbert made an appearance. This was unusual as he never left the kitchen unless he had to.

She looked to Louis who sat directly opposite from her. He gave her a soft smile and she returned it.

Lord Alaric was leaning into his mate and his blond hair covered most of his face. Lady Marceline on the other hand had a stern look on her face. Mauve couldn’t tell if it was directed at her or not.

But there was someone who she could easily tell who their glare was directed at.

Lady Jevera sat elegantly beside her father. Her full red hair was tied up and the ends bounced around her shoulders. She did have luscious hair.

Jevera sat up straight, her dress did wonders to her pale skin, there was no denying how pretty and how she effortlessly commanded attention to herself.

Mauve was happy when her meal was placed in front of her, at least she could do something with her hand to distract herself from everything that was going on.

The meal was surprisingly silent, Mauve wondered if it was because they were all tired from the long journey.

She couldn’t imagine how hectic the journey must have been. Having to travel all the way when Palers were rampant.

The air felt thick, Mauve could tell there was a lot on the Lords’ minds. Funny enough, neither of them said anything except sending glares her way. She figured they were all trying to be civil and enjoy the meal after a tiring journey.

Mauve looked up and her eyes met with Jael. He gave her a questioning look and she replied with her eyes and soft smile.

He squinted his eyes as though he didn’t believe her but he didn’t push it as he returned to his meal.

Mauve could not wait for the last meal to be over. She wanted to talk to Jael about the situation with Vae and ask what he could do about it.

If she had truly been given to Lord Seraphino by her father, would they be able to get her away from Lord Seraphino?

Just what was her father thinking? He could have given Seraphino anything. Lands, jewelry, and the like but had chosen a human. Not just any human, the one who had watched over his daughter. She felt hurt and betrayed. This wasn’t the first time she had felt this way about her father but she thought he would at least have a limit. He didn’t.

Jael frowned and his cutlery dropped, making a loud sound in the hall but that was quickly drowned out by the sound of the dining hall doors opening.

Mauve held her gasp in, as Lord Seraphino walked in but his presence wasn’t the problem, it was the fact that Vae was right next to him being pulled on a leash.

Vae was slightly bent forward as she tried to keep up with Seraphino’s tug. He obviously didn’t care that his hand on the rope was in an awkward position for her neck.

What was he doing? Why was he doing this?
