Chapter 507: 507. Horrifying Sight

Mauve sat on the edge of her bed as she waited for Jael. It has been three days since she went around the castle compound with Jael.

She was alone in her room and she was nervous. She had thought she would skip the last meal and spend the rest of the remaining days the Lords would be here in her room but that didn’t seem to be the case.

She gripped the brush a little too hard as she ran it through her hair. There was no need to comb it again but she needed something to do. Something to distract her from her turbulent thoughts. Sure, she was putting pieces of her hair all over the bed but it wasn’t like she slept in it.

She looked at the door and then the connecting door. Any moment from now Jael will walk in from either of them. Her stomach knotted. Would she be able to enjoy the meal?

The Lords had started arriving as early as after the first meal. By the end of the second meal, she was told that most of them had arrived. Considering the sun would set soon she expected they should have all arrived.

Mauve’s stomach twisted some more. When Jael had casually mentioned that he would come get her in time for the last meal, she had thought she was hearing things. But he seemed serious.

She wanted to ask more questions but she hadn’t and now she was regretting it. When the last meal was over, she would ask him what the plan was.

Would she be stuck in her room? Or did he intend to let her move around? Mauve didn’t know how to feel about this, it would likely piss off a lot of Lords.

"Lost in thoughts, I see," Jael said.

Mauve jerked and her eyes flew to the connecting door. How did she not hear him come in? Vampires and their silent movements.

"Yeah," she whispered and dropped the brush, not missing the fact that more hair than usual was stuck on it.

He was resting on the wall and by the looks of things, he might have been in a room for a while now.

"Want to talk about it?" He asked as he pushed himself off the wall.

"It’s not that important."

"I beg to differ. I wasn’t being very quiet and you didn’t hear me come in."

"Would the Lords be in the dining hall?"

Jael nodded as he stopped in front of her. "Most of them have arrived so we should expect them to join us for the last meal. Is that what this is about?" He asked.

"I’m a little nervous," she whispered, twisting her fingers as she stared at him.

"Why?" He asked and sat on the bed with her.

Mauve tried to not scrunch up her face at him. She was sure he could take a guess.

"You know why."

"I don’t really. I am going to be with you, there is no reason to be nervous."

"I know but..."

"You don’t have to join them. We could eat in your room," he said without hesitation.

Mauve’s eyes widened at Jael’s words. She didn’t need anyone to tell her that was a bad idea.

She jerked her head towards him yelling, "No! I am fine. We don’t need to do that. I guess my nerves just went awry, just a little."

Jael narrowed his eyes at her, "You don’t need to push yourself."

"I know, I am not pushing myself," she smiled at him. She tried to make it seem as genuine as she possibly could.

There was no reason to get all anxious. Jael was going to be there and Louis too. Sure, Lord Levaton and his daughter were going to be there too but they were better than Lord Phelan.

She swallowed. She wasn’t sure about the Garths though, Jael had not mentioned anything about them.

"What about Lord Garth? Do you know if Lady Sabrina has arrived?"

"Why do you care?"

"Well," she shrugged. She didn’t know if she could just blurt out that they were sort of friends.

"No," he responded. "I was told he wouldn’t be able to make it until tomorrow night. He said they would try to be here before the second meal. The meeting will be held immediately after."

"Oh, okay."

She stood to her feet and stretched out her hand to Jael. "We should be on our way now."

He looked her from down to up, his gaze stayed on her face for a few seconds before he accepted her hands.

He chuckled when Mauve did try to help him up. He pushed himself to his feet but didn’t let go of her hands instead he used it to pull her to himself.

He walked in step with her and they quickly made their way out of the room. Mauve frowned as sounds reached her ears as soon as the door opened.

Jael took a step forward and put himself in front of her and whatever was downstairs. He peered over the bars and Mauve heard him swear.

"What is it?" She asked, wondering what the matter could be.

"Don’t!" Jael yelled but it was too late.

Mauve’s eyes widened enough to fall out of her sockets as she looked down. It was well lit but she didn’t need much light to see what was going on down there.

Lord Seraphino has arrived, however, that wasn’t the problem. The problem was, attached to him on a leash was Vae.

The rope was obviously tied uncomfortably around her neck and Vae looked skinnier than she had ever seen. She looked pale but not the kind she would have gotten from being indoors.

"Vae!" Mauve was screaming out of her lungs before she could help herself. "What are you doing here?"

Mauve knew that wasn’t the thing to say but that was the first thing that popped out of her head at the horrifying sight before her.
