Chapter 504: 504. Notice My Absence

Mauve woke up with a jerk. She frowned as she realized she was in bed alone. She sat upright immediately, looking around as she searched for Jael.

The room was dark so it was a bit hard to see. The curtains were still drawn but she could tell it was already nighttime.

A candle was turned on but it was on the bedside table and it was only bright enough to illuminate her side of the bed.

She yawned slightly, wondering when Jael left. She couldn’t tell if he had been away for long.

She yawned again and slid out of the bed. She might as well get dressed early. She still felt a little sleepy but it was nothing a little warm water couldn’t take care of.

"What are you doing?" Jael asked as she reached the connecting door, ready to open it.

"Ahhh!" She yelled, jumping in fright, and looked in the direction of where his voice was coming from. "You’re here."

"Apparently," he replied, adjusting on the sofa.

She rushed to him. "I didn’t see you," she whispered. "I thought you weren’t in the room."

"I figured," he replied with an amused tone to his voice.

"Why are you sitting here?"

"No special reason. I woke up early and didn’t want to bother you."

"You could have said something when you saw me wake up."

"Nope, this was more fun." His eyes twinkled.

"Jael," she cried and rolled on his body.

"Did you sleep well?" He asked.

She nodded. She actually slept better than she thought she would.

"You woke up too early though."

"It must be because you left the bed."

"Are you saying you notice my absence?"

"Of course," she whispered. "I miss you when you’re not there."

He kissed the top of her head. "Me too."

She yawned again.

"Hungry?"

"Not just that," she replied.

"Are you sure you won’t go back to bed?" He asked.

"No, I am not tired. I just haven’t fully woken up yet."

"You can sleep some more," he offered.

"That’s a bad idea. Knowing you, you’ll let me oversleep." She rolled on him some more, trying to find a comfortable position.

"More like you never let yourself get enough sleep."

"That’s my line," she said and looked up at his face. It was hard to see his expression in the dark but his eyes told her he was looking down at her.

"What?" He asked when she just kept staring.

"Nothing," she blushed and leaned into him on the couch.

He wrapped his hand around her body. "You’re so warm."

"And you’re frozen," she stated.

"Does it bother you?" He asked.

"Sometimes but I wouldn’t use the word bother, more shocking. I think you’re going to warm up sometimes and then you don’t. You’re only ever warm after a bath and that doesn’t last for very long."

"So, I should take more baths. Got it!"

"What? No!" She chuckled. "That’s not what I am saying."

"I know," he replied and rested his chin on her head.

"What about you? Does it bother you that I am warm all the time?" She asked.

"Bother me? Of course not. You feel like taking a warm bath in the cold every time. If I could, I’d bury my face in your depths every time."

"What?" She jerked around to see his face. He didn’t have to do that.

He smirked, "What? I like that you’re warm. How is that a problem?"

"You’re impossible," she laughed.

"Do you want to bathe with me, I’ll help you dress up."

"That’s a bad idea," Mauve responded immediately.

"Wet blanket," he whispered.

"I can’t believe you’re still calling me that. Besides, you have a busy day today."

"I can cancel all my plans."

"No," Mauve shook her head. "We are not doing that."

"Don’t forget, you’re supposed to show me around now that the workers have finished the renovations. I can’t wait to see it."

"How can I forget? It’s number one on the list."

She chuckled, "I should go," Mill should be here soon."

"No stay, she’s not here yet. I’ll tell you when."

"Are you sure you can tell if she’s here or do you just want me to stay for longer?"

"Who knows? Would you stay behind still?"

"If I find out you’re lying?" She asked.

"Yeah," he said. "Would you?"

"I will," she replied. "I like spending time with you."

"Okay," he said, adjusting his chin on her head.

Her stomach rumbled in the silence. Mauve buried her face in her palm.

"I thought you said you weren’t hungry?" He asked with a chuckle.

"I said I wasn’t only hungry," she whined. Of course, her stomach wouldn’t waste time trying to embarrass her.

He laughed, "I should let you go. The first meal should be ready by the time your bath is over."

"Would you not laugh? It’s perfectly normal to be hungry after waking up."

"Of course, it is. It was just so loud."

She pulled away from his grip as she stood to her feet. "I am leaving," she pouted.

He didn’t hold her back nor did he try to stop her as she stomped her way to the connecting door.

"I will come get you in time for the first meal," he said as she closed the door.

Mauve leaned against the door, he was right, Mill wasn’t there yet. However, she didn’t have to wait for long as a knock suddenly echoed and the door was thrown open.

"Mauve," Mill said as she walked in with the bath water. "You are here?" The vampire asked.

Mauve nodded, "I just got here, I woke up early for some reason."

"Are you feeling unwell?" She asked with a frown.

"What? No! Why?"

"I don’t know, it is unlike you to wake up this early. I was worried something might be wrong.

"Oh no, I am very good.

"Alright, ready for your bath?"

Mauve nodded happily and flopped into the water. Her nightdress fell to the floor at her feet and she stepped into the tub.
