Chapter 498: 498. Casually

True to his word, Erick made sure they weren’t bothered. Mauve didn’t move from the desk until it was time for the second meal and she wouldn’t have known to do so if Jael hadn’t interrupted her work.

"At this rate, you’d rather keep dealing with those letters than even eat," he muttered behind her.

"Huh?" She asked, raising and turning her head to look at him.

"Aren’t you hungry?" He asked with his arms folded as he stared at her.

"Not really," she responded. It was most likely because her first meal ended less than three hours ago.

Her shoulders were getting stiff though. That was the only discomfort she was facing. Okay, maybe she was a little thirsty.

"Well, I am," he replied.

Mauve frowned, Was he moping?

"Okay, it should be time for the second meal, right? Do you want to head out now?" She asked.

"Hmm," he replied and sat upright, pulling her back to his chest. He took a deep breath but didn’t let go.

"Jael," she called.

"What?"

"That’s my line," she mumbled, forced to drop the letter she held as there was no way she would be able to work with him holding onto her like that.

"You smell good," he whispered, tickling her ear a little.

"Thank you," she smiled.

"I should be thanking you," he said and took another whiff.

"There is no need to keep sniffing at me like that."

"Why not? You smell good, I might as well sniff all I want," he replied proudly as though he was stating facts.

"If you say so," she gave a little smile as she relaxed into him. It felt nice to let another person hold her body weight.

"I do say so."

"I thought you interrupted me because you wanted to go for the second meal."

"Yes, but we still have a few minutes left and I figured I’ll let you catch a break before then."

She opened her mouth to protest but she didn’t. He didn’t interrupt her work throughout, she could give him attention now.

"Thanks," she said instead.

"Really?" He asked and gently nibbled on her left ear.

"Jael," she shook her head like a little puppy and pulled his ear from his lips.

"I was bored, you know," he said. I wanted to rip all these letters because it has your full attention and I couldn’t even get a little."

"Don’t do that," she scolded.

"I know. How else would I be able to convince you to sit on my legs for that long either? You lose some, you win some."

"I never would have pegged you as the considerate type," she teased.

"You’d be surprised how considerate I can be about issues that concern you."

"I am pretty sure I have an idea," she said with glee.

"I am glad," his voice sounded like he was smiling.

"Don’t you think that’s enough break?" She asked after a few minutes passed.

"Nope," Jael replied without any hesitation. "I have been so starved for attention, if I don’t get enough I might die."

"Jael, at this rate," she added. "We will be late for the second meal."

"They can wait," he said casually.

"Jael," she cried.

"Fine," he said and stood up with her. His arms grabbed her waist as he lifted her.

Mauve had no choice but to lean backward into his chest so her upper body would have some sort of support.

"Shall we?" He asked with a smirk.

"No, we shan’t. Put me down!" She yelled out.

"Now why would I do something like that? I like having you in my arms."

"Well, I refused to go with you like this."

"Bear with it," he said as he adjusted her so she was across his arms.

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Bear it for how long?" She asked.

"Until we get to the door, that’s not too long, right?"

She folded her arms and scoffed, "Fine," she said. "I suppose I could bear that."

Jael chuckled. "Alright, my little temptress."

"Don’t call me that," she pouted, trying to pretend it didn’t remind her of what happened before they slept.

"Why not?" He asked, bringing his face closer in an attempt to see hers.

"No reason," she replied but didn’t meet his eyes.

"Hmm or do you prefer My Love?" He asked casually.

Mauve hid her face in his neck mumbling incoherent words.

"I can’t hear you," he replied and tried to pull her away so he could see her face but she had a lock grip on his neck.

He chuckled again and started for the door, "I guess My Love it is."

Mauve didn’t pull her face away from Jael’s neck until she heard the sound of the door opening.

She slipped down his body and walked out through the open door. She took a step forward and he grabbed her wrist.

She slowed down but didn’t stop walking. He closed the door behind them and led her towards the stairs.

Mauve didn’t know what to say and she hoped she didn’t make it awkward because all she wanted to do was run to her room and hide her face in her pillow.

She slowly raised her head to peek at him and turned away almost immediately when she noticed he was looking at her.

He chuckled, "You’re adorable," he whispered. "I guess I have to say it enough times for you to get used to it."

"I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it," she whispered.

He didn’t say anything in response and she wondered if she had said the wrong thing.

She looked up at him and his attention wasn’t on her. She frowned and looked to her feet.

She didn’t mean it in a bad way and it wasn’t like she didn’t want to hear it but it was something so serious that it bothered her that Jael could say it so casually and the words could even make it to her tongue, let alone out her lips.
