The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 497. Cushion
Chapter 497: 497. Cushion
Her first meal went well and nothing seemed out of place with Jael. He actually looked relaxed but she thought he was awfully quiet, he would usually tease her every chance he got but he did none of that.
She wanted to ask about who was at the door but since he didn’t mention it, she let it go.
"Where would you go from here?" He asked as he watched her wipe the corners of her mouth.
"What?" She asked, she had been too engrossed in her thoughts to hear him.
"I asked what you’d do after eating."
"Oh, I will go to your study. I need to continue with the letters."
"Don’t overdo it," he said.
"I know," she whispered and stood up. "However, the faster I can get it over with, the better."
"Yeah but no matter how fast you try, you’d need at least a couple of weeks."
"Weeks? Jael, come on. I will be done in a week. Don’t doubt me."
"I am not doubting you, I’m telling you to take it slow."
She narrowed her eyes at him and started for the door.
"Don’t leave without me," he ordered but did not attempt to stand on his feet.
"Are you kidding me?" She asked. She was already a lot of hours behind schedule, no thanks to someone who thought it was okay to let her oversleep like that. She knew he had done it on purpose.
"I am not," he said and pushed himself up, strutting to where she stood. It took him only two steps, his long legs covering the space that had taken her eight.
He towered over her, stopping too close for comfort. He tucked her hair behind her ears as his eyes scanned her face.
"Let’s go together," he whispered.
She swallowed and nodded, all her anger forgotten. "Yes."
He smiled charmingly and stuck out his elbow. She slid her hand through the space and leaned on him. He led her out of her bedroom.
Jael opened the door to his study and Mauve’s eyes widened at how bright it was while Jael squinted. She glanced at him wondering if he had given the order for this.
"What?"
"Nothing," she said turned away.
The curtains were drawn and she could see that there was barely any moon tonight. It was bright but not enough. The stars however were as radiant as ever.
She tried to rush into the study but he didn’t let her outpace him. She looked up at him and he shrugged.
Mauve didn’t push it, she let him lead the way. He got to his desk in no time and sat down, without any hesitation, he pulled her down, sitting her on his legs. Exactly the middle.
"Carry on," he said as though he was nothing but a cushion.
Mauve blinked, she was at a loss for words. She recovered quickly and leaned forward as she picked up from where she stopped.
She got engrossed and noticed Jael didn’t interrupt her, he didn’t even try to mess with her or anything like that but she could constantly feel his gaze on the back of her head.
It was easy to ignore and the silence was pretty comfortable. She just finished with the third letter when a knock echoed in the room.
"Ignore it, he will leave soon enough."
"Who is behind the door?" She asked.
"Erick," he whispered.
"You can tell or you guessed."
"Both. Carry on with your work, aren’t you trying to finish in less than a week?"
She turned her head to the side and glared at him before she continued working.
Erick was persistent as he knocked again and Mauve turned to look at Jael.
"Don’t even worry about it," he touched her chin and she chuckled before turning her attention back to her work.
Unfortunately for Jael, Erick wasn’t backing down and after another knock, he turned the handle and pushed open the door.
"You’re here," he said with disdain. "Why couldn’t you say something? I was knocking. Where is the Primus?" He asked without giving her a chance to respond.
That was when Mauve realized that because of the way she was seated, he couldn’t tell that Jael was behind her.
She opened her mouth to speak and she heard, "Shh."
Mauve blinked and tried to hold back her laugh, "I don’t know," she said.
"What do you mean you don’t know? He was with you after sunset."
"Maybe," she pouted. She didn’t want to lie. She was hoping her vague answers would annoy him and he would leave.
He walked closer staring daggers at her, "He didn’t tell you where he was going?"
She shook her head. "Nope."
As he got closer, he squinted his eyes. "What are you sitting on?"
More like whom, Mauve chuckled.
Erick walked faster, "Sire!" He yelled out in horror. "You’re here."
"In the flesh, Erick."
"Why did you tell me you didn’t know where the Primus is?" He asked, his face scrunched up in contempt.
"Because I obviously don’t want to be disturbed but since you can’t take a hint. What is this about?"
"I wanted to ask about the response. The messenger would be leaving soon and I figured the faster we send out the letter the better."
"It is unlike you Erick, you usually don’t care to do these things. Is Danag asking you to pester me?" Jael asked.
Mauve watched Erick’s expression falter a little but he hardened it immediately. "No," he lied. "This is my own choice."
"I see. Well then, I shan’t be sending a reply and unless it is important I would prefer not to be interrupted for the rest of the night."
Erick’s eyes widened slightly and Mauve watched him accept defeat. He bowed his head. Mauve couldn’t blame him, she had heard the tone in Jael’s voice even she wouldn’t argue with that.
"As you wish, Sire. I shall pass the message across and make sure you’re not disturbed."
"Good," Jael said. "You’re dismissed."
Erick nodded and headed for the door but he made sure to send a glare her way before turning to the door.
