The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 492. Marceline and Alaric
Chapter 492: 492. Marceline and Alaric
"She’s late!" Jael said, his frown apparent.
Mauve half expected him to bang his palm on the table with how angry he sounded. Lady Marceline seemed to effortlessly get under his skin.
"It’s expected," Louis said softly as he tried to de-escalate the situation. "She just arrived a mere ten minutes ago. It’s expected that she will be a little late."
"Give her five more minutes. I am sure she knows that the last meal will begin soon."
"Soon?" Jael asked sarcastically. "It was supposed to have commenced over ten minutes ago. Besides, there is no reason to wait for her. She can always join us whenever she wishes."
"A few more minutes wouldn’t hurt, right Mauve?"
Mauve’s eyes widened as she stared at Louis in shock. Why would he drag her into this? She didn’t want to be in the middle of whatever this was. She could tell it wasn’t going to go well.
"Should we wait for a few more minutes?" Jael asked.
She didn’t like how everyone’s attention turned to her even the other vampire that had been engrossed in their conversations turned to her direction.
Mauve adjusted in her seat and cleared her throat. "Yes," she said. "A few more minutes wouldn’t hurt."
"How many?" Jael asked.
"Huh?" She glared at Louis and he looked away. "Five," Mauve blurted out when Jael’s stare got even more intense.
"You heard her, we wait five more minutes and not a second more."
"Thank you my liege for your kind patience. I shall go see what the delay is and get her here within five minutes."
Louis pulled back his seat and quickly made his way out of the door of the dining hall.
She turned her gaze to Jael. "Was that too much time?" She softly asked. "I wasn’t sure."
His face softened immediately, "It wasn’t."
"Okay," she said. She wanted to say more but she doubted this was the place for it.
There was also the fact that she didn’t want that anger directed at her. It had been a while since she saw him like this and frankly, she didn’t miss it.
The noise at the table picked up as the conversation ensued. Mauve just kept her gaze on Jael as she let her thoughts wander.
He winked at her and she laughed. At least he had the time to still joke around with her even though he was in such a crappy mood.
She stretched out her palm and squeezed his arm that lay on the table. She tried to take it away but he used his other hand to hold her palm in place.
"Jael," she whispered, tugging her. He smirked before slowly letting her go.
A few more minutes passed and Mauve could practically see steam pop out of Jael’s head.
"That’s it!"
As soon as the words came out of his mouth, the door flew open and Louis walked in. Behind him was Lady Marceline and her mate, clinging to her as always.
"Sorry, I am late," she said to the table as she sat down. "The journey here was quite tedious. I am glad you all were nice enough to wait for me."
"Lady Marceline," Danag and Damon rose to their feet. "Welcome."
"Oh, have your seats. I already delayed the last meal by a lot of minutes. No need to drag it out any further before a certain nephew of mine has my head."
Simultaneously everyone turned to look at Jael, even Mauve but his glare turned their gazes away immediately.
They dropped to their seats and Danag added, "I am glad you got here without incident. It is a pleasant surprise."
"Well, you’ll be the only other person that thinks that."
Mauve tried not to smile. The woman was resilient. Whatever chance she got at taking a jab at Jael, she made sure to jab hard.
The servants moved quickly, serving out the meals. Mauve was used to waiting her turn which was always after everyone had been served first.
She noticed Lady Marceline stare when the servants finally got to her. It was hard to read what was on her expression.
Unexpectedly, the last meal went off without a hitch. Lady Marceline didn’t make any snide remarks at Jael, instead, she concentrated on her mate whom she fed occasionally.
He ate his food and hers. It was nice to watch them. He was very attached to her but Mauve also thought it went the same way, Lady Marceline was attached to him.
"Shall we?" Jael said when she was done eating.
His tone said there was no room for argument even though she wasn’t going to argue but she could tell he wanted to leave as soon as possible.
"Of course," she said and stretched out her hand.
"Oh," Marceline said with a piercing stare. "Leaving already?" She asked. "Most of us still have our plates full. Surely, it isn’t right that the host leaves first."
"Louis is here," Jael said without looking at her. "He would take care of everything that might need my attention. He is quite capable so don’t hesitate to tell him your problems."
"My mean nephew, even though your aunt made the journey here, you wouldn’t care to spend some time with her."
"Didn’t you say you came to see Louis?"
"Is my little nephew jealous? Don’t be, you’re still my second favorite nephew."
"Mauve," Jael called again.
"Sorry," she said as she realized that she had not placed her palm on Jael’s outstretched palm.
"I am sure you’re tired Lady Marceline. The journey here must have been exhausting. I hope you have a good night’s rest."
"Don’t say that like it’s a threat."
Jael didn’t reply to this as he led Mauve out the door. She heard Lady Marceline say something to Louis but she was too far to hear her words.
She looked up at Jael but his expression remained the same. He didn’t seem angry though which was a good sign.
She leaned into him as they made their way to the bedroom. She could tell it was going to be a long night.
She made up her mind not to ask him any questions, he was already agitated, she would try to make him feel better, not worse.
