The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 485. Idleness
Chapter 485: 485. Idleness
It has been two weeks since the incident at Francine’s estate. According to Mill, the vampires that had been sent to help out would be returning soon.
Mauve frowned, she had absolutely enjoyed not seeing Otis’ face at the table. However, Mack had to go with them so she was at least glad he was coming back.
It had definitely explained why Otis was in a cranky mood on that particular day and had wanted to take out his anger on Mill.
It still annoyed Mauve that he probably wouldn’t have had anything to say about Mill if it wasn’t for her.
She had heard nothing from Louis since that day and it has been even harder to get him alone.
"If I didn’t know better, I would think the piece of steak pissed you off," Jael suddenly said, pulling her out of her thoughts.
She slowly lifted her head to look at him, "Sorry, I was distracted."
"I noticed," he replied. His brows dipped as he stared intensely at her, "Should I be concerned?"
"No," Mauve blurted and sat upright. She didn’t like the fact that the attention of everyone at the table was now on her.
"If you say so," Jael said and turned his attention to his food but his expression said he didn’t believe her.
Mauve sighed and tried to go back to eating. The tension must be getting to her. Everyone was so busy these past couple of days, Mill included.
She had barely been able to see the vampire aside from when she helped her dress up. Even Louis seemed to be occupied, leaving her with nothing to do. It made her even more aware of the fact that she was an extra in the castle.
She knew this was old thoughts and she should be over this by now but the fact that it was more glaring these days made it hard to ignore.
She groaned trying to force herself out of her thoughts. She caught Jael’s gaze and immediately composed herself. She didn’t want him to ask any questions. She wouldn’t even have any answer to give him.
The first meal ended without incident and as usual, Jael took her out of the dining hall. She was glad when they walked out the doors.
"Are you sure you’re okay?" He asked with concern in his voice. "You seem out of it."
"I am fine. I guess I am a bit overwhelmed with everything happening in the castle right now."
Jael’s worry lines increased and she hoped he didn’t take it the wrong way.
"Give a couple of weeks, it should die down before you even realize it."
"I know, I am not complaining."
There was no way she could tell him, she wished she had something she could do. Even if he gave her the option of taking part in the preparations, what could she do? She would just get in everyone’s way. It was better like this.
"Do you want to join me in my study?" He asked.
"You could help me sort the letters."
Mauve’s face brightened immediately, she nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, I’d love that."
She bent her smiling head down, wondering if Jael had been able to figure out why she had been lost in thoughts or if he just wanted to spend time with her.
She peeked at him and looked at her feet immediately. It was annoying how perceptive he was.
"Are you going to your study now?" She asked.
"Not yet," he replied. "I need to deal with a few things outside the castle first."
"Should I come with you?" She asked with puppy eyes.
"As much as I want to say yes, it would be better if you stay here."
Mauve pouted but she didn’t push it. He has already done this much, it should be enough. The last thing she wanted was to be seen as some sort of hindrance.
"Okay," she smiled.
"Where would you like to go?" He asked as they reached the top of the stairs leading to her room.
"The library. I will wait for you there," she replied.
"Alright."
"Don’t hesitate to let the servants know if you need anything," he said.
"I know, I will be fine."
"Don’t leave the library unless a guard is with you."
"I know," she called out, sounding infuriated. "I won’t do anything I am not supposed to."
"I know," he said and squeezed the palm he held. "But it doesn’t cost me anything to be cautious. I don’t mind if I have to remind you again and again."
Mauve nodded. Even though she understood where he was coming from, it was still a tad bit annoying. It wasn’t like there were more vampires, it was still the same number and she had been nothing but careful.
Mauve sighed, maybe the idleness was getting to her. At this point, she would be happy doing chores in the kitchen. She was sure she could wash the plates without ruining any. If she had to sit by herself for another couple of days she would definitely lose it this time.
Unfortunately, this would be her situation for another couple of weeks. She knew she would have to bear it but it was easier said than done.
"Here we are," he said and pushed open the doors.
He planted a kiss on her forehead before walking away. Mauve groaned loudly, hoping the sound of the door shutting would drown out her cry.
"Okay, aside from constantly being front row to your unending public show of affection, this is surprising."
"Louis!" Mauve said, spinning on her heel.
He was standing a few feet further into the library. He must have been behind the shelves, that’s why she didn’t notice he was there.
He was at the first meal but had left before she and Jael. She never would have expected him to be here. She had thought he would be supervising the work as he had been for the past two weeks.
