Chapter 468: 468. Something Weird

"You sound like someone trying to convince me you have better things to do when you really don’t," Mauve said with her back to Louis as she walked into the library.

"You know as soon as Jael leaves, you always have something mean to say about me and you act like some angel in front of him."

"Remember, you can only see what you are in other people," she laughed at the look of horror on Louis’ face.

"Enough about this. Did you sleep well?"

Mauve nodded and turned away from him, praying her thoughts wouldn’t stray.

"You were late for the first meal. Woke up late?" He asked.

"Something like that," she replied.

"Does it have anything to do with the scarf?" He asked with an amused expression.

"Mind your business!" She found herself yelling.

"Okay," he responded and walked further into the library.

Mauve frowned as she watched him while she took a seat. Mill would probably take her time to get here. Since the first meal just ended she wouldn’t still be busy.

However, there was no reason to be in a hurry. Danag did say they could take a week when she asked but no more than that and considering the decisions they’ve made she was certain they would be ready in less than two days.

All they had to do was decide what would go where and Danag would take care of the rest. At the end of the day, Danag and Mill will deal with everything.

She groaned, it felt like Jael added her to this project so she wouldn’t feel left out but that’s exactly what she felt like. She didn’t know a lot of things and had to keep asking around.

"Is something wrong?" Louis asked. "You groaned."

"Did I?" She asked as she looked at Louis with her head still on the desk.

"Loud enough," he replied. "Is something wrong?" He approached her.

Mauve frowned as she noticed the book in his hand. She wondered if he wanted to read while they waited for Mill.

"I don’t think I am of much help in this project," she mumbled.

"Why?" He asked as he took a seat next to her. He opened the book, right in the middle and his gaze turned serious as he checked the contents

"Well, because... Are you even listening to me?"

"Of course," he replied and shut the book with a loud sound. "Why would you think I wasn’t?"

"Well, you’re reading."

"I wanted to confirm I had the right book."

"What’s the book about?"

"You’re straying, Mauve. We can come back to the book later. Now, tell me why you think you’re not much help."

"Well I always have to ask you all for everything," she whispered.

"Because we are supposed to decide as a group. It makes sense that you’d ask us everything?"

She glared at him and scrunched up her nose.

"What?" He asked with a smirk. "Annoyed that my response makes sense. If you want something to complain about there are other reasonable points than this."

She scoffed and folded her arms, "I knew you weren’t going to be of much help."

"That’s a lie. Anyhoo, I need your help," he said.

"Oh," she said, unfolding her arms as she gave him her full attention.

"What do you need?" She asked.

"I need you to read this," he replied.

"Oh, the book?"

"Recognize it?" He asked with a raised brow, holding back from handing it to her.

She shook her head, "I was just shocked that’s the help you wanted. I never thought you couldn’t read."

Mauve couldn’t hold back her grin at Louis’ unimpressed expression. The grin quickly changed to a soft chuckle.

"I can read, I’d have you know. Just humor me," he sounded serious.

"Fine," she said and stretched out her hand. "Give it to me."

He handed the book to her, opened. She stretched out one of her hands and on a second thought realized she might not be able to hold it comfortably with just one hand, so she stretched out the second.

Louis dropped the book on her open palms and the first thing she thought was, she was right. She would have had a hard time holding the book with just one hand.

"What do you want me to read?" She asked.

"These lines," he pointed to a part in the book. The middle.

They were four lines altogether. They were strange words she had never seen.

"What is this?" She asked as she peered at it. "Is this the old language? I thought you didn’t want to teach me. Actually, you said you couldn’t," she complained.

"It’s not, I actually can’t teach it to you, this is different. Would you just read it and while you’re at it, concentrate on this."

He held up a piece of parchment paper and if she wasn’t trying to understand what was going on, she would have noticed, he looked very serious.

"What?" She asked in horror.

"Humor me, Mauve. What have you got to lose?"

"It’s not a matter of humoring you. It’s more like how can I concentrate on that and read."

"You never know until you try," he replied.

She gave him a quizzing look but he didn’t look like he was going to let go of this. The ridiculousness of the situation was starting to annoy her.

There better be a point to this. If he was just messing with her, she would be so annoyed she would never speak to him again.

"Just these four lines?" She asked.

"Yep," he replied, still holding the paper as he nodded his head.

The lines in question were in the middle of the book. There were a few other lines at the top and the bottom both in the same strange language but the lines he wanted her to read took up most of the page.

It was a bit weird that they were placed right in the middle of the page. Compared to the fact that Louis was holding up a paper and asking her to concentrate on it while reading the lines, the placement of the lines no longer seemed that weird because he was doing something weirder.
