Chapter 447. Old Language

Chapter 447: 447. Old Language

Mauve stood in front of the opened library doors. She couldn’t see a thing. The candles were out and the curtains drawn. She knew if she took a step inside there was a high chance she would hit her head against a shelf.

"One second," Louis said to her and she felt a light breeze as he moved away from her.

Picking the light in the pathway he used it to light up the candles. Mauve could only watch in awe at how fast he was moving.

She shook her head. Humans had no chance, there was no doubt. He was fast and she could tell he wasn’t at top speed.

What was even more impressive was the fact that the candles didn’t go out with all the wind caused by Louis’ movements.

The huge space was lit up even before she could tell him he didn’t have to light up everything. Since she was only going to be in one part of the library.

"Come in," he said after he was done.

"You didn’t have to turn on all the lights," she commented.

He glared at her, "Next time say that before I actually do it."

"You were moving so fast. I couldn’t stop you."

"Whatever. Where’s the book?"

"Here," she said, shoving it right in his face. He didn’t have to ask the question, he could obviously see she was holding it.

"Where did you take it from?" He asked as he grabbed it from her grasp, removing it from his face.

"I don’t recall, Jael was the one who gave it to me."

He shrugged, "I am sure we can put it anywhere."

"Louis, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do," she cried.

"Oh don’t sweat it. None of the books here are properly arranged. I told you Victoria was more of a collector. She liked the idea of books and grabbed as many as she could get her hands on."

"That’s bad isn’t it?" She asked.

"If you feel so bad. You could rearrange. I am sure it must have been annoying while you were reading."

"Yeah," she replied. "Not to mention, there are some strange books here."

"Strange? Whatever do you mean?"

"Well first off, there is one in Vampiric tongue."

"Wait a minute. Vampiric tongue?" He threw his head back and laughed.

"Who told you that’s what it’s called?"

"Nobody," she said with a blush. "I just called it that for a lack of a better name."

"Vampiric tongue just sounds cool, I will give you that but we just call it the Old Language."

"Can you speak it?" She asked. She asked Jael and he said he could but he made no attempt to show her.

"Most of us can. Well, I don’t know about the newer generation."

"So you can read it? Can you teach me?"

He squinted his eyes, "I am afraid not. I can only imagine the uproar it will cause if it is found that a human speaks the Old Language."

"Well then can you read the books to me?"

He squinted his eyes at her, "As long as you aren’t trying to learn the language."

"How can I possibly learn the language from just listening to you read it?" She glared at him.

"Well, I guess I gave you too much credit. You’re not that smart."

"Whatever," she said and strutted away from him and walked to the shelf where she had found the book.

She pulled it out, recognizing the book immediately. She walked back to where Louis stood and handed it to him.

Here," she said. "This is it."

Louis frowned as he looked at it. She saw his eyes widen briefly before his expression neutralized. "No, it isn’t. This is written by a human."

"What?" She blinked and took the book back from him. She wouldn’t bring him the wrong book.

She opened it and glanced through the pages. It was the right one. The one about herbs that didn’t exist.

He sighed, "Vampires never write their names in a book. Almost never. Except the author was pretending to be human and in that case, he wouldn’t use the Old Language."

He walked past her without giving her a chance to reply. He stopped in front of a shelf, stretching his hand to where hers could never dream of reaching, he pulled out a book.

"This," he said as he handed it to her. "Is a book in the Old Language. Written by a Vampire. At the back of the book, a vampire usually signs with his blood. The only indication of who the author might be."

She accepted the book with a confused expression. His words almost made no sense to her.

"That’s enough to know who wrote it but you won’t know unless you’re a vampire and you’ve met the author. It’s a way to be hidden and seen at the same time. I have no idea why they do it."

Mauve opened the book. It was heavy. She blinked as she saw the writing. The text was strange. She knew immediately that this was a completely different language.

The words looked more like symbols than letters. She winced as she stared at it. Was it the lack of light that made it hard to read?

"This is the Old Language?" She asked.

"In written form, yeah."

"Can you speak it, please? I am curious to know how it sounds?"

"I’d rather not," he said.

"What? You said you will."

"I don’t recall," he replied. "I simply said I’d read the book to you. I never said anything about reading in the Old Language."

"Why are you being so secretive about the language?"

"Because even vampires don’t use it except when it’s absolutely necessary."

"I see, I will drop it. But what about the other book? If it’s not the Old Language then what is it?"

Louis stepped closer and bent his knees so his face would be at the same height as hers. He locked eyes with her and with the creepiest expression, he said just one word.

"Magic."
