Chapter 413: 413. Fruits and Flowers
Mauve’s eyes fluttered open as the carriage came to a standstill. The lack of movement pulled her out of a light sleep and that was when she realized she had dozed off just a little. She pulled her head from Jael’s chest as she sat upright.
"We are here," he said but didn’t make any attempt to move. Mauve could see out the window and the sun wasn’t out yet. It looked like it wouldn’t be long though.
Danag usually rode for a while longer before stopping and sometimes she could see the sun on the horizon before they stopped. It was bit unusual that they were stopping now.
Mauve heard a sound and the door flew open. Louis stood in front of the open door with Danag behind him.
Mauve tried to get off Jael’s legs at the intrusion but he stopped her from moving.
"My liege," Louis said with a mock bow. He didn’t even hide the amusement in his voice. Mauve could only imagine the sort of expression he had but it was hidden from view.
Mauve watched Jael’s face contort. He glared at Louis and for a second Mauve feared the worst.
"What do you want, Louis?" Jael asked.
Louis slowly raised his head, "You should be thanking me. I know just how susceptible you are to the sun so I found a cozy place just for you. Of course, Mauve too." He turned to her and gave her a bright smile.
"Move out of the way," Jael replied without responding to Louis’ words. He seemed even more angry.
"Thank you, Louis." She returned his smile as he stepped aside.
"Don’t thank him," Jael grunted and lifted himself from the carriage seat.
It would have been easier for him to drop her before he attempted to leave the carriage but she knew if she suggested that, it would only piss him off more.
It was almost disappointing but he didn’t seem to have any issues getting out of the carriage with her in his arms, except the part where he had to uncomfortably bend.
"Jael," she called. "You can drop me."
He looked down at her and turned to Danag, "Where is it?"
Mauve’s eyes bulged. Did he just ignore her?
"Right this way, Sire. Just behind the carriage." Danag started to lead the way as he spoke.
Jael walked behind Danag and they both went around the carriage. Mauve tried to look around as they walked.
It was bright enough to see around and she could see Nolands hadn’t changed one bit since the last time she was here. The land was still as dry and as rocky as ever.
She looked ahead to see they were approaching a cave. The front was covered with branches and leaves but it was still clear it was a cave.
The covering was obviously to prevent any sunlight from getting into the cave. It was done properly and she wondered when they had set this up.
The only way that would have been possible is if they had gone ahead. As if to confirm her thoughts Erick’s loud voice could be heard coming from the cave.
"I can’t believe I had to do this," he whined.
"Sire," he bowed as he saw Jael at the front of the cave. "It should be all clean now," he said and bowed again.
He got out of the path and rushed to the side of the rock. Mauve could have sworn she heard him hacking his guts out. She wondered what that was about.
Jael didn’t slow down his steps, he just walked straight for the cave and used one hand to move the branches to the side. He created enough space for him to walk through without any of the branches touching Mauve.
Mauve winced as a mix of several smells hit her. It smelled a bit sweet and nasty, simultaneously. It smelt like a mixture of fruits, flowers, and rotten animals. It was a bit overwhelming.
There was no doubt about it, something had died in here. At this point, she couldn’t help but wonder if it was during a meal.
However, it didn’t make much sense as the dead animal didn’t smell fresh. It had been sitting in this cave for a few days after its last breath.
"Louis!" Jael called darkly. "What’s the meaning of this?"
Mauve watched a hand move the branches to the side and Louis took a step in. He remained at the entrance as though he didn’t want to take another step into the cave.
"I apologize, Sire. Unfortunately, this was the only cave for another two miles and Erick already took out the source of the smell. It should fade out soon."
He wasn’t wrong, she had only smelt it so strongly as she stepped into it, it didn’t smell as bad as the first time but she was sure that wasn’t the same for Jael.
He would most likely be able to smell it as strong as she had for the rest of the time they spent here. No one would be comfortable.
"I am sure that is not true and even if it is, I am sure there could have been some other form of shelter," Jael said, he sounded pissed off.
Mauve wiggled in his hands as a way to let him know to drop her down. She couldn’t interrupt now, not when he was scolding Louis.
"As I have said," Louis replied, glaring back at Jael. "Erick already took out the source of the smell. However, if you do feel this isn’t conducive enough for you, you can join us in the tents. Unfortunately, we know you won’t last underneath all that heat."
Mauve could clearly see Louis taunting Jael. She turned to look at Jael and there was a scary look in his eyes. He was obviously not pleased by the situation.
Jael glared at Louis as he stood by the doorway. He slowly but instead of replying to Louis, he turned his head to Mauve who was still around his arms.
"How is it? Can you stay here?" He asked gently, his eyes didn’t hold the anger she saw a few seconds ago.
