The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 411. More To Lose

Chapter 411: 411. More To Lose

Mauve didn’t say anything for a while. She just hung onto the Jael as the carriage swayed from left to right.

They most likely still had a long way to go. Unfortunately, they would have to stop before dawn so the vampires could find a place to set up for the day to hide from the sun.

Inconvenience, huh? She bent her head a little. The King has told her in every way possible what she meant but for some reason, it wasn’t sticking.

She would have to stop holding out hope that her relationship with the King would ever change. He wasn’t her father, never been and he has only seen her for what he could use her for.

She wanted to change the subject. Wallowing in this was depressing. She didn’t want to think about it anymore, it wouldn’t change the situation.

"How’s the castle?" She asked suddenly.

Jael bent his head to look at her face, she could tell he was surprised at the question. He shrugged before looking away.

"No different from when you left," he said.

"I see," she said. Why did she think he would be a good conversationalist? "What about the fence? Any progress?" She asked.

She was sure there was something different. The castle was undergoing major construction not to mention the new vampires living in the castle.

To say it was no different from when she left was not just an understatement, it was a straight-up lie.

"So, so. Haney is still around, he helps out here and there." Mauve squinted her eyes, he glanced down at her and added. "Mill sends her greetings."

Her eyes widened immediately, "She did. How is she?" She asked.

"She’s okay. She did complain about not having much to do."

Mauve’s eyes narrowed. That couldn’t be true. Mill was actually quite busy, she managed the servants and was in charge of supervising them.

Taking care of Mauve was the only chore she had to do that didn’t involve other servants. She was sure the vampire had her hands full.

"Are you sure? I am sure I must have been a bit of a handful for her," she said.

"There you go again making assumptions."

"That’s rich coming from you."

"I promised not to do that anymore."

"Okay, and if you don’t like something I say tell me why. Don’t avoid the situation and send me out."

Jael lips thinned. "Okay."

"Also, is there anything else I need to know?" She asked.

She had wanted to change the subject but it was best to get this over with. She didn’t want any more surprises, she was tired of them.

If there was anything more she needed to know, she wanted to find out about them now. Having things spring up on her suddenly was destabilizing.

He looked at her with a clouded gaze. "Anything like what?"

"Are you keeping anything else from me? Like you found out about my past."

"I promise I am not. You already know all there is," he whispered.

Mauve gave him an odd look, she didn’t like the uncertainty in his voice. "Why didn’t you tell me you asked the King for help when I got attacked by the Paler? Why didn’t you tell me what his response was?"

"I didn’t want you to know. I knew it was the sort of thing you wouldn’t want to know."

"Thanks," she mumbled.

He was right, she would have been better off not knowing but at the same time, she was glad she knew. She sure won’t make the mistake of exaggerating their relationship ever again.

"You shouldn’t thank me so easily. I have done some things I am not very proud of," he said.

"Absolutely! You say I never tell you anything but the same goes for you." She arched her head to the side as she stared up at him.

"I have told you all there is," he said with a light dip of his brows.

"Really? Then who is Louis?" She asked.

"Oh," Jael said with a bored expression. "Some vampire who used to live with us."

"Then why didn’t I ever hear anything about him until he showed up in my room? He also said you guys are practically brothers."

"He said that?" He asked.

"Yes," she replied.

"Pay him no mind, he is delusional. I hope you didn’t feed you any more lies, he would do that sometimes."

"Jael, are you two not close at all?"

It didn’t make any sense, she could see Jael sending someone he didn’t trust. There was certainly some truth in what Louis said but she could tell he didn’t want to talk about it.

"We used to be," he said and looked distant for a moment. "And yeah, we were practically brothers. He came to live with us after his parents died and we were raised together. However, about four decades ago, he left the Vampire Regions and didn’t return until about two weeks ago."

Mauve’s eyes bulged, that was a long time. That was more than twice her age. "Why did he leave? Where did he go?"

"Don’t know, don’t care."

"Jael," she called.

He sighed, "I truly don’t know where he went."

"But surely he must have had a reason for leaving."

"It was a wild goose chase. It wasn’t worth leaving his family for. He didn’t even return when our parents died."

Mauve watched Jael’s expression change a little. His parents’ death was still a bit of a touchy subject for him. She couldn’t blame him, she felt the same way about her mother’s death and she couldn’t even remember it.

She could also see that his relationship with Louis must have been really close. She doubted he was aware he was referring to his parents as their parents.

"I am sure he had a good enough reason," she whispered.

"Why are you defending him? You don’t even know him." His eyes didn’t hide his displeasure.

"Well, he doesn’t seem bad. It’s hard to get a read on him but he seems nice," she smiled.

At first, she wasn’t sure if she liked him but now that she could see that he was important to Jael, she was sure they could get along.

She wanted to get along with him. So far, he has managed to get on her nerves multiple times but it wasn’t in an unbearable way. This was good. She wanted to have some relationship with Jael’s brother.

However, she wasn’t sure what the vampire thought of her. It was hard to get a read on him but still, she could tell he meant no harm.

Jael squinted his eyes at her, "I don’t like your interest in him."

"Well, he is part of your family. It’s only expected that I will want to know about him."

"Don’t worry about it. We are not family anymore. Haven’t been for four decades now."

Mauve wanted to stress it but she let it go. There was plenty of time to discuss this some other time.

She was already tired of all the conversation and the journey was getting to her. She was also sleepy. Usually, she would be fast asleep by this time but maybe it was because she was too tense to sleep.

It was hard to believe she was in Jael’s arms. Does this mean things are back to normal? Are they fine again?

"What are you thinking about?" He asked.

She looked at him with a strange expression, "Well, I don’t know but what does this mean?" She asked.

She did tell him she liked him and he had said nothing back. She would be stupid to just go along with this.

Jael was nothing but his whim. He was more fickle than anyone she knew. Acting according to how he felt. What proof did she have that she wouldn’t chase her out again?

He frowned, "What does what mean?"

"Me going back with you. What does it mean? Who is to say you won’t change your mind again and ask me to leave? If you have done it before, you should have no issues doing it again."

Unfortunately, this time she has nowhere to go. If he were to tire of her again, she would be the only one to lose.

It was hard not to dwell on this. Maybe, it was the fact that everything was clearer now and she was less disillusioned about several things.

She was no longer going to lie to herself. It was best to shelve out things than go with the flow. How long will this last?

He would get a mate for sure. Vampires couldn’t stand her. She knew this was probably not the best time to ask this but she needed to hear something.

She needed some assurance that she wouldn’t be tossed to the side again when Jael plans no longer aligned with her in it because as she had found out, she was the one with more to lose.
