The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 391. Someone’s Daughter

Chapter 391: 391. Someone’s Daughter

Mauve looked at her father with a stunned expression. She could not believe the words that just fell out of his mouth. Indeed, her ears were deceiving her.

"Why? You have never cared about what happens to me. Why put any effort now? What are you hiding from me? Why am I really here?" She rapidly asked as she threw caution to the wind. There was technically nothing to lose.

"What are you talking about?" He looked at her with a massive frown on his face.

"You’re here because it’s what’s best for you. I realized my mistake, and I am willing to make amends. Is that not enough reason?" He asked, staring at her intensely.

Mauve winced as the same set of words were thrown at her again. Did he really think she was that gullible?

Mauve shook her head, "No, it’s not. Are you trying to get back at the vampires by keeping me here?" She asked.

He looked taken aback but quickly covered his expression. Mauve’s eyes widened in horror. She had simply said the words on a whim, but his reaction was proof enough that she was right on the mark.

"What? I am not that important. Why would you do that, and do the people not mean anything to you?" She asked.

Trying to rile the vampires up was a huge mistake. Even she could clearly see that. If they could attack the castle on a whim and cause that much damage, why give them a reason to attack? Though she doubted this was a good enough reason.

"Oh, relax. You’re right, you’re not that important. You have only one role, and that’s to listen to what your father says and respond accordingly. That’s your duty to make up for your existence."

Mauve winced. Surely, her ears were deceiving her, and her father didn’t just say that to her. She blinked, blinked again, hoping that somehow there would be a reset on what he just said to her.

However, her father wasn’t done because as soon as the words left his mouth. He went off, holding nothing back.

"After I took you in. Do you have any idea what that cost me? Do you have any idea what a stain on my legacy your existence is?

You have the opportunity to fix all that, and this is what you do?"

Mauve blinked back the tears that had started to gather at the corner of her eyes. It hurt in a way she couldn’t explain.

Her stomach twisted, and the urge to throw up was so intense that all she could do was close her eyes and take a deep breath.

Mauve let the silence drag on as she tried to recover. None of what he said was news to her, but to actually hear him say it was more heart-wrenching than she could ever imagine.

"I can’t believe you’re saying this, your highness. I always thought of you as a father. Too bad you didn’t feel the same.

I will be leaving, and I’ll be out of your hair forever this time."

"Leaving? You’re not going anywhere, Mauve," he said, unblinking.

"What? You can’t keep me here!"

She said stubbornly, but at the same time, she tasted fear at the back of her throat. He could. There was no rule that said he couldn’t.

"I think this is not the right time to discuss this," he suddenly said. "The guards would escort you to your room, and when you’re in a proper frame of mind, we would continue this conversation."

"I am in a proper frame of mind," she said stubbornly, glaring at him.

"No, you’re not Mauve. No sane person would want to return to the Vampire Regions. I should have never let you leave."

Mauve blinked. What was this? He just told her he hated what she stood for, and now he was acting like he was doing this for her own good.

"Don’t act like you’re doing this for my own good," she looked up at him with hate in her eyes.

Evan arched his head to the side, "No father wants their daughter to look at them like that."

"You are not my father. You have never been."

Evan frowned, "Get some rest, and then you’ll see reason when you are less emotional."

As soon as the words were out of his lips, he walked to the door without giving her a chance to respond.

Mauve held her head in her hand. She has done a lot of stupid things, and made a lot of wrong decisions, but this was the first time she ever thought she messed up real bad.

Whatever his plan was, it didn’t include her leaving, and he had every intention to keep her here. Mauve frowned. How was keeping her here going to solve anything?

"Princess," a guard called to her.

Mauve raised her head from her palm, her anger unhidden. She directed her gaze at the guard and watched him falter a bit.

"W-we have to take you to your room."

She looked him up and down and returned to place her head on her palm. She would leave when she wanted to.

Mauve didn’t know how long she sat there; maybe she thought all this was her imagination, and if she thought hard enough, it would fade away. It didn’t.

Finally, after what felt like an hour but was only ten minutes. She stood to her feet and made her way to her room with the guards closely behind her.

At least they didn’t touch her, but they were close enough that if she stopped abruptly, they would most likely bump into her.

She entered the room, and one of them tried to go in with her, and she closed the door in their face. She was grateful when they didn’t try to open the door.

Mauve got to her bed and threw herself on it as she let out a wail. Her father... Scratch that. The King’s words played incessantly in her head.

She didn’t need to hear that. She was okay with just guessing. She didn’t need to hear the words from the actual source.

That was beyond cruel and a little unnecessary. The one time she decides not to do what he wants, he pulls out this card.

Like she needed more reason to think maybe she shouldn’t have been born. Mauve bit into the pillow as she let out a scream.

She rolled on her back and just felt the tears pour out the side of her eyes. She hugged the pillow and just lay there crying.

She sniffled when she couldn’t cry anymore and walked to her mirror. She wiped her face. Her puffy eyes were back.

Mauve cleaned the tears, streaming down. She had to stop crying, or else, she might as well be walking with a sign on her forehead.

His words had hurt her more than she could ever show, but she would rather lose a limb than let it show.

She already knew this. At least the good news was he was finally showing his true colors or that pretending was eating her from the inside. It’s always best to know when you’re wanted or not.

She has had too much experience with this. She was only wanted as long as she had a role to play. Mauve looked at herself in the reflection, really looked at herself.

Maybe she was never going to find it. Perhaps this was just her fate, and there was absolutely nothing she could do to change it.

She needed some air. She didn’t care that she looked a mess. Maybe if she breathed in the flowers and the grass, she could keep the thoughts at bay. She would go crazy if she stayed here for too long.

She walked to the door and turned the handle, but the door wouldn’t open. Mauve frowned and tried again the same thing.

She pulled with all her might, and the door remained shut. Was she locked in? She knocked on the door, banging as hard as she could.

"Princess, please don’t do that." A voice said to her. "The King has asked that you remain in your room for the rest of the day until he says otherwise."

"What? You can’t lock me up like I am some prisoner." She said, still banging on the door.

"Princess, remain calm. This is to protect you."

Mauve winced at the statement. She dropped to the ground, her back against the door. Never in a million years would she have seen this coming.

Her father was adamant about keeping her here. To what end? The one time she wanted to be far away from this place, she was stuck here.

This would have never happened if she hadn’t left Vampire Regions in the first place. At least she would still be under the illusion that she was someone’s daughter.

But by the looks of things, she just lost her last parent. More like, she never had them in the first place.
