Chapter 389: 389. Scars To Prove

Mauve walked into her room, and as she shut the door close, she heard "Boo!"

The door clicked closed as she yelped and clutched her chest. She would have sworn her heart flew out of her mouth. Even though she recognized the voice immediately, it didn’t stop her from getting frightened.

She looked in the direction of the voice and saw Louis and Danag standing in the corners of her room. She wouldn’t have noticed them if they didn’t say a word.

A knock jerked the fear out of her. She partially opened the door she had just closed.

"Is everything alright, Princess?" The guard standing outside her room asked.

Mauve gave him a small smile, "Yeah."

"I heard you scream," he said, trying to look over her shoulders.

"I just frightened myself," she replied.

She didn’t bother explaining more. She just smiled and quickly shut the door in his face, hoping he had not looked inside. Not that it mattered. He doubted the guards would have been away to see them from the doorway.

"I didn’t think you’d be back this early," she said, walking further into the room. "It was sunny until about an hour ago. You startled me."

"I apologize, Princess," Danag said. "I was a bit impatient."

"It’s fine," she said and sat on the bed.

"So," Louis said, sounding bored. "I guess that must have been enough time to make your decision. Let’s hear it."

She frowned. He didn’t even bother to exchange pleasantries after scaring her half to death. She glared at him.

"Yes, I have made my decision."

"You have?" Danag asked. Mauve could really gauge what his emotion was.

"Yes. However, my maid would be here any minute, and I’d rather not have to explain why I have two vampires in my room."

She was a bit antsy despite having time with her thoughts most of the day. She had not expected to have to answer so early. Being caught off guard was doing a lot to her nerves.

It didn’t help that she thought the decision she chose was the worst possible one. Everything pointed to why this was a bad idea, but she wasn’t listening.

"It will literally take you two seconds to answer," Louis said.

Mauve jerked her head to him, and he smirked.

"I was joking," he said and raised his hands. "We will take our leave now and return much later. How about that?" He asked.

"I would appreciate that," she said.

He nodded and walked to the window, "Let’s go, Danag."

Danag nodded and pushed himself from the wall. He nodded at her. "See you later, Mauve," he said and jumped out the window after Louis.

Mauve let out the breath she wasn’t aware of holding. She threw herself on the bed, feeling overwhelmed.

She didn’t know how to feel about the whole situation. There were a lot of things that didn’t add up. However, Jael said they could talk it out.

Still, it didn’t mean anything. There were many times she had thought they were connecting, and then something happened that threw all of that out the window.

She couldn’t trust this, right? He had sent a letter and two guards. Mauve still had a hard time believing they were brothers. However, she could see similarities in their attitudes, except Louis was less stiff.

He was also weirdly nice to her. She remembered when he said she shouldn’t cry about Jael. This didn’t mean she was fine with him. After all, vampires were not to be trusted, not after what they did to her father.

Mauve sat on the bed, her back straight and her legs crossed. The vampires would be back any minute from now, and if she said she was ready for them, she was lying.

Stalling had not helped her one bit. Why was this so difficult? It was just a question. Was it because she was unsure of the answer she had chosen? It would be best to change it, but she knew she didn’t want to do that.

She had decided to put a condition, but that didn’t help her case. But it somehow made her feel like she was doing this for a just cause.

"Ready to answer now?" A voice said as she heard the swish of the curtains.

"Yeah," she said.

"Hello, Mauve," Danag said.

She smiled at him.

"Okay, let’s hear it."

Mauve glared at him. You would think he would have less of an attitude since they were literally here to beg her to go back.

"Before I respond," she said, still looking at Louis. "I would like to ask a question and make a few requests."

Louis blinked. His expression changed.

"What would your questions and requests be?" He asked.

"Why did he attack my father?" She asked. "Was it because he found out I was his illegitimate child?"

There was no point hiding it. She doubted none of them knew. If Louis was who he claimed to be, he was aware, and it was Danag. He was literally Jael’s right hand. The vampire knew everything.

"What?" Danag said. "Of course..."

"We are not the one to ask," Louis said with a straight face, interrupting Danag.

Danag looked at him, and Louis held out his hand. "If you want to know the answer to that question. You would have to ask him."

"He is not here," Mauve said. She didn’t like how obvious it was that they were keeping the information from her.

"Well, I can’t speak for him."

"Then what can I do?"

"We can send your message," Louis responded.

"What?" Danag and Mauve said simultaneously. "That would take too long," Danag added.

"What is another couple of days? I am sure he can wait," Louis said, casually.

"Lord Louis, I don’t think that’s advisable at all," Danag said, looking a bit agitated.

"What would you do, Mauve? You can either ask him in person or send a letter. Same with your request. At the end of the day, he might do what you want. Are you willing to gamble on that?" He asked, staring at her intently.

Mauve looked at Louis and then at Danag. Louis was right, they were only messengers. If she wanted answers, there was only one person to ask, and lord knew she had a lot of questions.

"What’s it going to be, Mauve?" Louis asked. "Are you willing to take the risk even though there isn’t any gain for you, and it would be best to remain here? After all, this is the Vampire Regions. It’s nothing like what you’re used to."

Mauve frowned. Was Louis trying to warn her? It was hard to get a read on him. The fact that she didn’t know what kind of person he was made it a bit difficult to tell if he was on her side or not.

"I like to think I know the Vampire Region well enough," she replied.

She didn’t like how he was making it seem like she couldn’t handle it until the last month she was there. She knew exactly what it held. She had the scars to prove, both external and internal.

"Well then, I guess I can’t argue with you. Your decision then? This has dragged on for far too long."

"I shall return with you," she said.

There was no reaction on Louis’ face, not a raised eyebrow, nothing.

"That’s wonderful, Mauve," Danag said with a smile. "I am glad you chose this. I truly am."

Mauve smiled stiffly at him.

"When then would you like to leave?"

"In a couple of days," she said.

"Days?" Danag asked in horror.

"Yes, days. I can’t just drop everything and leave immediately. I have to make preparations. I have to inform my father, amongst other things."

Somehow, Mauve could tell this was news her father might not want to hear. She didn’t know what his plans were, but somehow, she could tell it included her not leaving.

She wondered what it would take to convince him. But that wasn’t the reason she wasn’t leaving yet. She didn’t like the fact that she was expected to drop everything and rush back simply because Jael said it.

Louis threw his head back and laughed, "I like her. As you wish. Take your time. As much as I hate the inn we have to stay in, I guess we could stay for longer."

"I will speak to my father, maybe you can get moved to the castle."

"Don’t bother, I doubt I would be able to stand it here. I will be back every night just to get an update on what’s going on. If you want to see me you can check the Daisy Inn. It’s not too far from the castle."

"I will," she said, waving them off as she watched them leave through the window as they had come.

Mauve stood by the window minutes after they had left. That had gone unexpectedly more different than she thought. Was it annoying that she was beyond excited?
