Chapter 387. A Vow

Chapter 387: 387. A Vow

Mauve watched the curtains of her room flay, the only evidence of Louis’ presence. The partly open curtains gave her an ample vision of the sky, which looked beautiful.

The stars were out, lighting the sky with their glow. The moon was crescent; it wasn’t its brightest, and it was just enough light not to outshine the tiny stars closest to it.

She tore her gaze from the window, stalling, wasn’t she? She wiped her face, drying the tears streaming down her face. She wanted to say Louis was right, but she didn’t know him well enough to know whose side he was on.

She lifted the pillow again and stared hard at the letter. Picking it up, she pulled away the seal. The metallic smell of blood hit her. She frowned. Did he write it with his blood?

Mauve’s eyes widened in horror. She was fine with a regular letter. Why did he feel the need to do this?

She opened it completely, and the red letters looked back at her. The color was darker at night, but it was still enough to let her know what it was.

Mauve moved closer to the lamp. She didn’t have good enough eyesight. Sitting in the dark with vampires didn’t make her eyes better. In fact, nothing of her changed. She would still have difficulties roaming in the night with them.

Mauve shook her head. Her unnecessary, gloomy thoughts were debilitating. She couldn’t afford to think like that right now. It would make her dive into the deep hole of all the things that were wrong with her.

Mauve stared at the letter. It was surprisingly easy to see the words. She didn’t know what she expected when she found out he wrote with his blood, but this wasn’t bad ink.

Who would have thought she would ever receive a letter like this? She had seen him write them several times but never thought she would ever be on the receiving list.

For some reason, she felt honored. Vampires treasured Jael’s blood. To them, it was an essential part of his legacy. This was why he was the primus.

Dear Mauve.

The letter started. It was so cliche she chuckled. She didn’t know what she had expected to read, but she sure as hell didn’t think the first words would be Dear Mauve.

I know you don’t want to hear from me again. I just wanted to tell you...

I don’t know what to write. I am not good at this. I don’t know how to express myself in a way that you’ll understand. I want you to come back. I miss you. I miss you so much it hurts.

I shouldn’t have said that, I shouldn’t have said many things, but it’s hard to know what’s hurtful and not when I’m angry. I didn’t like the fact that you were so adamant about wanting to leave.

I like to think you know me, but I guess I don’t even know you and never really allowed you to know me, so it’s expected that we would have lots of miscommunication.

I don’t want you to leave me. I want to keep you forever, but at the same time, I don’t want to keep you if you don’t want to stay with me.

I know I am hard to deal with. I will try to change if that is what you want me to do.

Please, come back home if this isn’t enough to bring you back. I am more than willing to do anything you want. Whatever your demands are, I will fulfill them.

Do you want to visit your father every other month? Done! Do you want to go to different places? Done! Just come back to me. The idea that I won’t ever see you again hurts more than you’ll ever know. You’re important to me in more ways than you know. I’d do anything to keep you safe.

I know the Vampire Regions isn’t anything like human territory, but that can change. I can change. I want you back. I should have let you go with making such a fuss, but I was worried about many things.

Worried you wouldn’t come back if you left. Worried you were only here because you had no other choice.

I am so sorry, and I hope you will accept my apology and return to me. I hope this is something we can fix.

I should have spoken about my fears with you. Maybe you would have trusted me more. I don’t care about anything else. I want you back.

Jael D’Arcy Valdic

Mauve blinked, "Oh," she cried as tears fell onto the letter. She pulled it away from her face. The water made a bit of the ink smudge.

She didn’t know what she had expected to read, but nothing, absolutely nothing, had prepared her for this.

What was this? This was a confession, right? Most people would take this as a vow. Why would he do this to her? What was she supposed to do now?

He knew about her past, she was sure, but he didn’t say a word about it here. He attacked her father, and he knew she already knew about it, but he made no mention of it either.

Mauve threw her frame on the bed, hugging the letter. What was this? The tears flowed down her cheeks. That was too much. She wanted to see him again.

Tell him that she loved him and didn’t care what the Vampire Regions looked like. She just wanted to spend every waking minute with him.

He was important to her, and hearing him say she was important to him, too, was so good to listen to. All she wanted to do was cry.

What should she do? Should she go back? Even though everything said otherwise. Vampires hated her. Well, she wasn’t liked here, but she wasn’t worried for her life, well, not yet.

However, she knew she would rather deal with the vampires and the threat to her life than never see Jael again. It was sad she already knew the decision she was going to make.

Ah, wasn’t she pathetic? All it took was a one-half-ass written letter. It was so messy, but at the same time, it looked authentic, and it gave her a clear view as to what Jael’s feelings for her were.

She wanted to see him again. She wanted him to hold her in his arms. She wanted to sleep next to him and wake up to him staring at her. She missed his frown, the way he ran his fingers through his hair when he was stressed out. She missed him, missed every bit of him.
