Chapter 386: 386. Don’t Cry

"Wait, Xanthus?" Mauve yelled suddenly in the middle of her bath, sitting upright.

She had been so shocked by the intrusion that she didn’t realize what Louis said until now. "Princess," called out a horrified Maria at Mauve’s sudden movement. Mauve could clearly see the fear and horror in her eyes.

"Sorry," she said apologetically and laid back down.

She had moved reflexively. She was sure the poor maid was traumatized while she was left with questions she wondered if she would ever get answers to.

That was definitely the name of Kieran’s estate, but she had been so distracted by everything else that she didn’t realize it immediately.

Who was Louis? He said he and Jael were raised like brothers, but on no occasion has Jael ever mentioned him. She would have remembered.

Maria helped her dry up and dressed her for bed, putting her in a night dress with robes.

"Is there anything else you need?" Maria asked as Mauve sat on the bed.

Mauve shook her head, "No, thank you. If I need anything, I will call for you." She said to the maid.

"As you wish, princess," she said to Mauve, bowing her head. "Please, do have a good night’s sleep."

"Thank you, Maria, and I wish you the same. Good night and sweet dreams."

Maria smiled lightly at her and exited the doors, carrying Mauve’s old clothes. Mauve didn’t move from her position even when she heard the door closed.

She closed her eyes tightly. It was the moment of truth. It was all she had thought about while she sat in the tub, wondering what he had written to her.

Right now, the letter was under her pillow. She had placed it there just as the maid, Maria, walked into her room. She winced a little.

It still felt a bit unreal that Jael would ask her to return, and the new character, supposedly Jael’s brother, made the entire thing too complicated for her to believe.

It was too much for her overwhelmed brain to try to comprehend. Why did Jael want her back all of a sudden? What did this have to do with anything? And the most important question, should she return?

Mauve touched her forehead, "I must be out of my mind," she mumbled to herself.

She didn’t like how happy she was, just the idea that he wanted her to come back, and she was willing to forgive everything else that had happened in between.

The feeling of loneliness that had overwhelmed her for the last few weeks. Trying to fit in with a family that obviously didn’t want her.

He already knew who she was, right? He also didn’t like that he had been cheated, so what was this about? Was he asking her to come back because he wasn’t satisfied, and he intended to break her even more?

Mauve lifted the pillow and stared at the letter with a look of horror on her face. What was going to be in it?

Was she curious? Would it be best to throw it out? Things were already messy. She couldn’t forget that he attacked her father suddenly.

Not that it made any difference, but if he had no regard for humans and would constantly keep making demands without trying to understand where the other party was coming from, it might be best not to return.

Besides, things were fine here. Mauve lied to herself. Her relationship with the royal family was still a bit stiff, but the fact that she could call it a relationship meant there was significant progress, and things would probably get even better from here.

Mauve didn’t like the way her chest squeezed as she looked away from the letter. She did want to know what was in it—more than anything.

She was beyond glad that he didn’t forget her and that even though she thought it would never happen, he wanted her back.

However, she couldn’t see why he would want to do that after quickly chasing her off. There was a catch, and the fact that she couldn’t see what the catch was made her very worried.

Mauve jerked as she heard a knock on her window. Just how has she been sitting staring at the letter? She quickly dropped the pillow, covering the letter.

Louis jumped into the room and sat on the window pane. "Hello, Mauve," he smiled. "It’s just me this time. Danag had other important issues to attend to. Hope you don’t mind?"

She shook her head, "I don’t." Mauve didn’t know what to think about the figure that sat a few feet away from her.

He was polite and seemed night, but at the same time, she couldn’t help but think he could be terrifying when he wanted to, and he wasn’t the type of vampire to be messy with.

His brows dipped a little, and he stared hard at her, "I suppose you have made your decision."

Mauve bit her lower lips. "I suppose," she whispered.

"Okay then, I am listening..."

"Why does Jael want me back?" She suddenly asked. She had to know.

Louis frowned. Mauve thought she could see some resemblance between him and Kieran. Were they brothers? She wasn’t sure she could ask him this question.

Besides, her thoughts were already occupied with Jael’s request. She didn’t have time to think about anything else.

"You didn’t read the letter," he said. There was no doubt in his voice.

Mauve nodded. There was no reason to lie. She didn’t want to lie, either. "I didn’t."

"Why?" He asked.

"It felt like I shouldn’t. It felt like, as always, I will have to do exactly what he wants." She whispered.

He couldn’t chase her off and then ask her to return as he wanted. Besides, her whole situation seemed a little too fishy for her to take it at face value.

"You’re right," Louis nodded. "I won’t be surprised if you tell me to leave your room right now."

Mauve frowned, "Aren’t you here to bring me back, regardless?" She asked.

"What? No!" He waved his arms. "To be honest, I was hoping you wouldn’t come back. Jael is quite the jerk, isn’t he?"

Mauve frowned. She thought they were brothers. What was this? "That sounds like you don’t want me around because I am human."

"Huh? How did you get that conclusion?"

She shook her head, "I don’t know. I don’t understand half of what is going on, and I can’t seem to think of any reason why Jael would want me to come back. He had expressively wanted me to leave and then the attack on the castle. I don’t understand anything."

Louis touched her forehead with his palm. "If that jackass had just explained half the situation to you, we wouldn’t be here. Do me a favor, Mauve, read the letter."

"I don’t want to," she whispered.

"You don’t have to. You absolutely don’t have to. However, if there is even a small part of you that wants to return to Jael, then you should totally read the letter. I know he is a jackass through and through, I’d rather lose a couple of limbs than ever defend him, but this time around, that’s what I have to say. I promise it would be worth your time."

"Yeah, but I don’t know..." she said, staring at him with a confused expression.

"What he did to you was cruel! He shouldn’t have let it drag on for this long. Taking your feelings for granted wasn’t just unfair of him but cruel. You shouldn’t forgive him if you don’t want to. Hell, you should never forgive him, but please make your decision after reading his thoughts on the situation.

Mauve closed her eyes, "Okay," she said, but even as the words left her mouth, she didn’t believe it.

Did she really want to go back? Somehow, she knew as soon as she saw the contents, whatever inhibitions she had would fly out the window.

Right now, it was only her sense of safety that was keeping her from rushing into Louis’ arms and asking him to take her. As hurt as she was, she missed him.

Mauve felt water run down her cheeks. Was she crying? The past month, she had tried to forget all that had happened, and now everything was just unfolding.

"I will leave you to it. Mind you, you can take as long as you like. You don’t have to make your decision immediately. I will be back tomorrow night, of course. If you don’t have an answer by then, that is completely fine. I will gladly wait until you do."

Mauve nodded, keeping her head bent. She didn’t want him to see her tears. She had shown too many people her crying face.

"I don’t know what he wrote. I doubt it would make any difference, truly. However, I promise I will deliver it to you. Also, don’t cry for the asshole, he isn’t worth it."

"What?" Mauve’s eyes bulged at his words. She raised her head to look at him, but he was already gone.
