Chapter 384. Otherworldly Scream

Chapter 384: 384. Otherworldly Scream

Mauve got out of bed, another day, another trial. At this point, she was praying the days would speed up. It wasn’t like she had plans anyway.

Unfortunately, today wasn’t like any other day. Malcolm decided to take it upon himself to go riding with her today—something about working up after breakfast.

She wasn’t pleased about the idea. She was okay with her regular routine of going riding with Galath, spending most of the day in her room sleeping, and then roaming around the castle at night.

She winced. You would think she would have adjusted to sleeping during the night by now, but she still had to take naps during the day if she wanted to function correctly.

She didn’t hate it. It gave her few opportunities to run into the Queen and other people. However, she was enclosed again. Her life hasn’t changed much.

"Thank you," Mauve whispered absentmindedly as Maria did the finishing touches to her dress.

Mauve stood to her feet and made her way to the dining room. Mealtime was always the worst time of the day. She still felt like she was simply playing a role unsuitable for her.

She entered the dining hall to see the Royal family was already seated. It was easy to call them that and not feel anything. The arena went silent for a few seconds as she walked in before conversations picked up again.

It was no surprise she was late. Maria had to drag her out of bed to get her to wake up. She suppressed a yawn as she walked to her seat, which was right beside Malcolm.

She gave a soft curtsey to the King and Queen before going to her seat. Malcolm stood up immediately and pulled back her chair for her. She smiled softly at him as she said her thanks.

She lifted the cover on her plate and stared at the bit of chicken. She wasn’t surprised. She could smell it from the doors.

Without hesitating, she dug into the food. At least her appetite was the same even though everything else was utterly moving in a direction she didn’t want it to.

She finished breakfast and didn’t hesitate to leave the dining room. She probably had only a few minutes to dress up for riding.

As much as she didn’t want to go, it would give her something else to do other than hang out with Sir Galath.

She didn’t appreciate Malcolm’s want to involve her in activities with him suddenly. However, she doubted that would change soon; she just had to take it like that.

The boots fit a little loosely, and it was probably because she had worn them out from all the riding she had done the past month.

She heard a knock just as her hair was getting tied up to prevent any from getting to her face.

"Come in," she called out without hesitation. When whoever it was didn’t come, another knock followed.

"Maria, please let whoever is at the door inside."

"As you wish, Princess." She took her hand from Mauve’s hair and bowed before heading to the door.

Mauve wasn’t surprised when the door revealed Malcolm. "Taking a little too long, are we?"

"I am almost done here," she replied without looking at him.

"I am just kidding. Take your time."

She narrowed her eyes at him but didn’t say anything. It wasn’t like she had anything to say. These days, most things have lost their spice. She would go along with it, but she wasn’t extra excited.

"Ready now?" He asked as Maria pulled away from her.

"I like to think so," she returned and looked at him. She didn’t bother to look in the mirror. She doubted she would care what she saw there.

He held out his arm as she got close enough. She didn’t want to deal with what would come if she refused, so she simply slipped her hand into the space without question.

"Have you found any news about Vae?" She asked as the door to her room shut.

"Oh my God. At least give me a few more days. You just gave me information about her less than three days ago. I would need more than that to find someone who didn’t look like they wanted to be found."

"That’s not true," Mauve replied with a frown.

"Really? No servant knows where she is. That’s a little suspicious, wouldn’t you agree?"

Mauve didn’t respond; there was no other response except to agree with him, and she didn’t want to do that.

He led them out the castle doors, and Mauve winced at the sun. She was staring down at the front yard. It was beautiful as always.

Malcolm led her down the stairs to where Sir Galath was waiting with, who had become her horse. Clair.

She has ridden any other horse since she got here, and she doubted that was a good thing. She didn’t think anything would happen to the beautiful horse, but she couldn’t help but think that just learning with one particular horse was limiting.

However, she trusted Galath’s teaching, and he didn’t mention that, so that she would attribute this line of thought as part of her overthinking.

The fountain sparkled in the sunlight, and the colorful flowers gave the view an alluring vibe.

She could see the gardener had gone all out, trimming the bushes to look like tiny animals. From where she stood, she could only see a rabbit.

"Need any help?" Malcolm offered.

"No," she replied, and before he could insist, she got onto the horse.

"Where are we going?" She asked.

"Patience, Mauve."

Mauve frowned as his words triggered a memory she wanted to forget. "I am patient. I just want to know what direction to ride in."

"Just follow me," Malcolm replied. "Hiya!"

The horse took off immediately, breaking into a gallop. Mauve forced herself not to rush after him as she gave her horse time to pick up the pace.

They rode around the field, and by the time they were done, Mauve was flushed from head to toe.

"I brought a picnic basket," Malcolm said as he brought his horse closer to her.

"Good, all this riding has made me really hungry."

Malcolm gave her an odd expression. It was hard to read what it meant.

"What?" She asked with a frown.

"Nothing, come with me. Let’s find shade."

They got to the cluster of trees, and Malcolm laid a mat on the ground. Their horses had been released, and Mauve watched them eat the grasses.

Mauve frowned as she saw the basket. She wondered where he would have kept it. She didn’t notice it until he pulled it from the side of the tree. She didn’t dwell on the thought, though; after all, she was starving.

"You finally look like you’re having fun," Malcolm commented, taking a seat across from her as he undid the items in the basket.

"Because I am," she replied as she helped him.

"Really?"

She nodded absentmindedly. All she wanted to do was dig into the food. It smells heavenly. There was cake, sandwiches and some fruit.

"That’s good. Usually, you tend to look like you’d rather be elsewhere."

She paused and looked up at him, "Maybe."

"Do you want to go back?"

"No," she lied. She didn’t want to have this conversation. Indeed, not now. It will definitely ruin the taste of the food in her mouth.

"If there is anything you want, let me know."

Mauve smiled stiffly and ate the food. Thankfully, the rest of the Picnic wasn’t terrible.

She got back to the castle, and all she wanted to do was sleep. She did just that. At this point, she had stopped fighting it and just tried to be productive during the night.

She woke up just before dinner and got ready. Dinner went on for a little too long, but she excused herself as soon as she was done eating, feigning a headache.

Mauve got out of bed as she heard loud voices. Something was definitely going on. She rushed out of her room, wondering what the commotion was.

Just as she stepped out, she ran into a servant rushing down the path. "Princess, I am so sorry," the servant said with panic.

"It’s fine," she said. "What is happening?"

"Vampires," she whispered.

Mauve winced at the look of fear on her face. "What?"

"The King turned them away. You don’t have to worry about that. It’s just taking the castle a little longer to calm down."

"Okay, thank you."

Mauve retreated into her room. As much as she wanted to rush back out to find out what was happening, she wasn’t sure she wanted to face whoever was here."

"Finally," a voice from her window said. "Do you have any idea how hard it was to find your room? Had Danag sniffing like a dog."

Mauve let out an otherworldly scream as a vampire walked into her room. She didn’t recognize who this was.
