The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 369. Why Would He Lie?
Chapter 369: 369. Why Would He Lie?
Mauve sat across from her father in the same position as the last time they were in the drawing room. The fireplace had some burnt wood in it.
It was hard to tell if it was from last night or this morning but she figured if it was last night, the servants would have cleaned it up already.
"Mauve," he called, pulling her attention from the fireplace.
She lifted her head to look at him. "Yes,’ she responded.
"How are you finding the palace?"
"Quite well," she smiled.
"And the horse training?"
"A lot harder than I thought it would be. Sir Galath says I am making considerable progress but it doesn’t seem that way to me," she bent her head as she spoke.
"Take as long as you need to learn," he replied.
Mauve wondered if that meant she could stay as long as she needed to which was a bit ironic as they couldn’t wait to get rid of her last time.
"Thank you," she replied, lifting her head to look at his face but still didn’t look him in the eye.
"I am sure you’re wondering why I wanted to see you."
Mauve nodded, "I am," she responded.
"I have been a terrible father," he said bending his head.
Mauve was sure her expression showed her shock. She composed herself immediately. "I wouldn’t say that."
"No, it’s only right that you do."
What was this? She looked around, glancing from one guard to the other. She didn’t know what she was expecting but it sure as hell wasn’t this.
"I neither treated you nor your mother right and to top it all, I sent you off to the Vampire Regions amongst vampires."
Mauve didn’t know what to say, she didn’t know how to respond. She adjusted on her seat with the hope that the words would come to her but she could only stare at him in a daze.
"However, you must realize that at the time I figured it was what was best for the good of the nation. Being at the constant receiving end from vampire attacks, coming to an amicable conclusion was the only way to end the strife. Unfortunately, it had included you getting married to him."
"I-I understand and I have to problem about fulfilling my duty to the people. I am glad I was finally of use to you."
The words were out of her mouth before she could even think about it. Truthfully, this was how she felt the first time she had heard the terrible news she was getting married off.
It has been a tough decision for her but like that day, her father was looking at her in the same manner that he was now and she had wanted to make him proud even if it meant selling her off.
However, his apology was even more shocking than the marriage and she didn’t know how to react to it. She never would have thought this day would come.
"Please forgive me," he replied.
"There is no need to ask for my forgiveness," Mauve said blinking. "You simply did what you had to do."
"It might seem that way to you but no father should behave in such a manner. Say you forgive me."
Mauve frowned, "I do." The words sounded like it was coming from a different person.
He beamed, "I knew you would be understanding. I truly couldn’t have asked for a better daughter."
Mauve smiled stiffly. She could even yell at him, didn’t even want to. Yes, she had some resentment towards them but right now it almost didn’t matter.
As much as she wanted this to be real. She could almost see what was coming next. Was this something she would need to almost sell her soul for?
She smiled stiffly at him, "Thank you, father."
"I should have known I was sending you straight into the devil’s hand. That’s the reason I asked you to come back. I didn’t think vampires would be such greedy folks. I thought because they initiated the peace treaty and they had a new King we would have a better relationship, oh how wrong I was."
Mauve sat upright. "Did something happen?" She asked. Her father sounded like something went wrong.
"I-I didn’t want to trouble," he said, his voice cracking a little.
"What happened?" The longer he took to respond the more anxious she was becoming.
"Over two weeks ago, the castle was broken into by vampires. The king himself and three other. They attacked the servants and threatened me in the middle of the night."
"What?" Mauve brain did a quick calculation, it was around the same time Jael was away from the castle. Did he come all the way here? Was that what that was about?
"Yes, your father was almost killed even though we had an agreement in place. They didn’t care. I thought we were dealing with sane creatures but that’s not the case. As soon as that happened I knew I had to get you back no matter what."
"Wait a minute, I don’t understand. What exactly happened? And-and why?"
It didn’t make any sense to her. She couldn’t think of one reason why Jael would do that. Attack her father and his servants.
"I don’t know. All I know is I woke up in the night to the vampire King standing over my bed with the servants bleeding out."
"That’s awful!" Mauve replied bringing her hands to her lips.
"I know and to think I let you live with creatures who wouldn’t think twice about doing things like that."
"Why? Did he give a reason?"
"The blood apparently isn’t enough, they want more blood." King Evan bent his head and touched his temples.
"That’s why?"
Mauve shook her head, she couldn’t see Jael being so unreasonable. Actually, she could but he usually wasn’t without warning.
Her father nodded, "Without any warning prior, he showed up in the middle of the night and threaten me with the people under my care. The people I sacrificed my daughter for and I knew I had to get you out of there."
He paused and sighed loudly.
"I didn’t even think you saw my letter because Lord knows how many letters I have written before then."
Mauve frowned, she could clearly remember him apologizing about not sending a letter. What was he talking about?
"I know you find that hard to believe. However, I did write letters to you but when I didn’t get any reply I assumed you didn’t see them that why when I sent the latter letters I made it seem like I haven’t sent any before now because I was afraid the Vampire King would read it first."
"How are you sure I didn’t see your letter if your truly sent any."
"Because I know you Mauve. I am your father and I know there is no way you would wouldn’t have replied my letters."
Mauve frowned, there was no reason why her father would lie. Also, she was sure if she hadn’t seen the letter by chance Jael would have never shown it to her. Is that the same reason she did not get a response from Vae?
She grabbed her head, this was a bit overwhelming. Why did he ask for more blood all of a sudden? Was this because they started a war against Palers, hence they need more blood? Or is it because he found out he had been ripped off and wanted to get back at them?
She knew her reasoning didn’t make any sense but she didn’t know what to think.
"I am so glad you responded to her father’s call and came home."
Mauve removed her palm from her face. "I wouldn’t have refused."
"This time I won’t let anyone get to you. To think you returned with returned with such terrible scars. My daughter," he looked as though on the verge of tears.
"This wasn’t their fault," she heard herself say as she rubbed her arms.
"I know you’re being modest, it must have been a terrible experience for you. You’ve always tried to take on things you couldn’t but there is no need for that. I know you don’t want to return and I am here you tell you, you don’t have to."
"What?" Mauve asked.
"You heard me, you can stay in the castle as long as you like."
Mauve arched her head to the side. Was her hearing bad? Did her father just say the marriage didn’t matter? Wasn’t that little too late now.
"But the people?" She asked in horror.
"We would think of something."
"There is no need to that," she responded. Aside from the fact that her marriage was already over, it was still a little too much for her father to say this.
"There is every need for that. If we don’t show some resilience they would ride all over us."
As much as she agreed with him she doubted this was the way to show it. Vampires weren’t the kind they wanted to piss off.
