Chapter 356. A Severed Arm

Chapter 356: 356. A Severed Arm

Last Night

Danag walked into the castle to silence. It was just about time for the end of the second meal and he couldn’t hear a sound.

This was very odd, there was supposed to be some sort of rowdiness but it was pretty quiet. Almost as though no one was in the castle.

Everything had seemed alright from outside the castle. The workers were working as normal. He had caught no sign of Haney but it was only safe to assume he was taking charge of the recruits and that was happening on the other side of the castle.

"Where is everyone?" Erick asked with a frown. "There are no guards by the front door. Did something happen?"

"My thoughts exactly," Danag replied. "And it’s quiet, too quiet."

Suddenly, Mill came running from the direction of the kitchen. "Danag," she cried, rushing to him.

"Mill," he called back, turning in her direction. "What is going on? Where is everyone?"

"Thank Goodness you’re back. It’s the Primus."

Danag felt his already cold body turn ice cold. "What happened to him?" He asked with a low tone, fearing the worst.

"He was attacked by a paler, it nearly severed his hand off."

"What? Where is he?" Danag asked.

"What? What were the guards doing?" Erick barked as he mirrored Danag’s horrified expression.

They were already moving in the direction of the room as they asked the questions. Mill rushed after him.

"When did this happen?" Danag asked.

"Last night," Mill replied. "Just before sunrise. He was away for most of the night and returned to the castle drenched in his blood."

"Last night?" Danag asked with a frown as he stopped in front of the Primus’s room.

That was the night they got Mauve out of the Nolands. Since they didn’t leave for the vampire regions early enough, they couldn’t arrive until today.

Danag swore, he was only away for technically two nights, to think this much as happened.

"Yes, last night," Mill confirmed.

"Do you have any idea where he went?"

Mill shook her head, "Also, according to the guards he didn’t take any of them with him."

Danag swallowed and knocked on the door but got no response. He didn’t wait, just pushed it open. He was greeted with an open window and an unmade bed.

Mill rushed into the room, "He shouldn’t be able to move. He refused to take any blood, so his healing is pretty slow. He has been in bed, I made sure to keep an eye out."

Danag winced, he didn’t want to think of the significance of the open window. "Fuck!"

He stomped to the study and pushed the door open. The Primus slowly raised his head, moving his gaze from his desk to Danag.

"Barging into people’s space, did the journey make you senile, Danag?" Jael asked with a click of his tongue.

"Sire," he cried out in relief and rushed forward.

Danag stopped a few feet away as he took in the Primus’ features. He was paler than it was safe. There were dark circles underneath his eyes. This could only mean that aside from feeding, the Primus wasn’t sleeping either.

The next thing he noticed was the bandage around his right s

arm. He could still smell blood which meant it had not healed enough for it to stop bleeding.

He was sure if he looked closely there would most likely be blood on the bandage. What in the heavens happened? Danag couldn’t begin to imagine.

He found it hard to picture a Paler giving the Primus such a hard time that he would return in this state. The only time he could picture this happening is if there were more than two Palers.

Danag frowned, that didn’t make any sense. If the Primus was within the vicinity someone would have noticed. Where was he attacked? That was the question.

"I apologize, I was concerned, sire, I heard you were attacked. What happened?"

"I supposed you’re just returning," Jael said, ignoring Danag’s question.

"Yes," Danag responded. "I’ve only just arrived."

"And?"

"And?" Danag asked, thoroughly confused.

"Your report, Danag. I don’t believe I have to ask you."

Danag’s brows dipped, "I believe your health is more important, and if there are measures we should put in place so this doesn’t happen again."

"I will decide what’s important. Now the damn report, Danag."

"Sire..." he started to say but was interrupted.

"I don’t know if you have noticed but I am not in a very good mood, Danag. It would be best if you didn’t piss me off. Now give a proper report of the journey."

"Yes, your grace." He said with a soft bow. "The journey had gone pretty smoothly. We didn’t run into any difficulties and most importantly, we weren’t attacked by Palers."

Danag peered at The Primus as he spoke but the Sire gave nothing away. His expression was as blank as the lack of blood on his face.

"And Mauve?" He asked.

"We dropped her off at the nearest village. A knight was there to pick her up. We left immediately."

"I see," Jael whispered. "Anything else worth adding?" He asked.

"Not particularly," he replied.

"You may leave and don’t return unless I send for you." The Primus bent his head as he dismissed them.

"But Sire..." Danag words dried in his throat as the Prinus raised his eyes to look at Danag.

His glowing eyes pierced through Danag’s soul and the vampire knew if he spent another minute here, he would have no one but himself to blame.

Danag headed out the door to Erick and Mill standing right outside. He closed the door behind him as they looked at him with a hopeful stare.

He shook his head and Mill used her hand to cover her face. "Is he still refusing blood?" She asked.

"He didn’t even let me speak."

"The only person that has managed to speak to him was Lord Levaton and he was vague with the Lord. He had given up when it was obvious the Primus had no intention of telling him anything worthwhile."

"Where is the Lord?" Danag asked.

"In his chambers, I think. The last time I saw him was just before the second meal."

"And Jevera?"

"Same thing, I have barely seen her moving around the castle."

"Where is Damon?" Erick asked, suddenly. "We have been here for more than fifteen minutes and there is no sign of him. What is this incompetence? To think he couldn’t even hold the fort for two days."

"He should be with Haney training the recruits."

"Get him," Danag commanded. "Tell him to meet me in my room. Send a guard if you have to."

Mill nodded and rushed for the stairs. She was out of sight soon enough.

"What’s going on, Danag?" Erick asked as they both headed for their rooms.

"I wish I knew." He replied.

He slowly went up the stairs and briefly stopped on the floor of Lady Jevera’s room, deciding against it he went up the next set of stairs leading to his.

"Do you think it has anything to do with the human?" Erick asked as soon as they were behind closed doors.

"It doesn’t make any sense."

"I know right? Nothing the Primus had done recently made any sense and we are left to bear the brunt of his mishap."

"Relax, Erick. You don’t know what happened, don’t jump to conclusion."

Erick opened his mouth to reply when a knock rang out and the door was immediately thrown open.

"Danag, welcome." Damon’s voice reached them.

Danag opened his mouth to reply when Erick set off after Damon, his fangs out and he scratched Damon across the face, splattering blood all over the floor and Damon’s shirt.

"What the bloody hell, Erick?" Danag cursed.

Damon grabbed the sides of his face but there wasn’t even a hint of surprise in them.

"Explain yourself," Erick demanded. He was heaving, his fangs were still grown as he snarled at Damon.

Damon cussed and stood to his full height. He touched the side of his face. The wounds were already closing up but some part of it still dripped blood.

"That’s my line, Erick," Danag said with a glare. "What is the meaning of this?"

"So that’s why everything is out of place. If you hadn’t been frolicking with my cousin, maybe you would have noticed the Sire getting attacked." Erick spat out.

"What?" Danag asked, looking from Damon to Erick. "What are you talking about Erick?"

Erick looked at Danag with horror in his gaze, "How can you not tell? There is a bite mark on his neck. It’s healed but the blood stain is still there."

"Bold of you to assume, it’s your cousin."

Erick stepped forward, "Because I know you, Damon. You wouldn’t just offer your neck to anyone."

"How creepy, only you would notice something like that."

"Enough!" Danag yelled. "I don’t care for whatever this is. Damon, do you have any idea what happened to the Primus? That’s what is important now and Erick get your acts together. You can continue your fight after that."

"Somewhat," Damon replied. "I doubt it would change anything."

"Let it out."
